Year 12 students joined together for their group photo on the last day of the
term. Looking forward to Term 4 and their �nal preparations for graduation,
they posed for the yearly casual shot from the Principal’s balcony. Have a
great break kids and good luck with your �nal seven weeks of schooling!
Term 3 Finishes
Tablelands Police Charity Golf Day On Sunday 10th September, the Tablelands Police ran a hugely successful Charity Golf Day. Proceeds from the
day are donated to support some very worthwhile bene"ciaries/charities including Angel Flight, Police Legacy
and several families within the community who have been identi"ed as having a loved one who has serious
medical needs. Brayden Phillips, a student in Year 12 at ASHS was one of the bene"ciaries this year. Money
raised on the day will go toward purchasing an electronic communication device to support Brayden with his
communication. ASHS sta, and parents supported the day by running the BBQ at the ninth hole. A great day
was had by all with the tableland community coming out in force to support such a worthwhile event.

Rugby League Gala Days V Mareeba SHS
Have a Go, All Abilities PE Day
On Wednesday 13th September a group of ASHS Hub students went to Cairns for the 'Have a Go, All Abilities PE
Day' at Barlow Park. Students had the opportunity to 'have a go' at a variety of sports including cricket, tenpin
bowing, athletics, soccer and netball. Students and sta, had a fantastic time, demonstrating their skills and
sportsmanship. The day ended with lunch and games on the esplanade.
Fantasy Adventure Writer’s Camp
Each September, six of our year 8s from Atherton High, along with students from Mareeba High,
Malanda High and Cairns High, are invited to participate in the Annual Fantasy Adventure Writing
Camp. Each year, we are sworn to keep the secrets of the camp, unable to share with outsiders
exactly what takes on the banks of Tinaroo and the quests into the unknown.
But what we can tell you is that it is FANTASTIC! We hope you enjoy these extracts of writing
from our participants: Carley Wyatt, Annabel Rogers, Emmagen Litch"eld, Tahnee Dilger, Sharni
Kruck and Shanae Kelman.
Thank you to Mr Finey and Ms Ciranni for supporting the camp with your time and supervision.
And a huge thank you to Mrs Sellars from Cairns SHS, and the sta, of the Tinaroo Environmental
Education Centre, for co-ordinating such a wonderful experience for us.

Fantasy Adventure Writer’s Camp Urban Nightmare - Carley Wyatt Life in this city is what I imagine life is like in hell.
The sky-scraping buildings capture the sun’s light ad warmth, transferring it into power for the computers and
the co,ee makers inside. The sky is blackened by both storm clouds and daily pollution, executing a remarkable
magic trick that makes all the stars and the moor disappear. The cold night is turned freezing by the constant
downpour of rain outside. As I watch from the box apartment, a so-called home, the cars still crawl past and
pedestrians trudge back from their late-night shifts. The electric brightness of the city makes certain that the
missing natural like is replaced without error.
Tales of Alynthi - Sharni Kruch
Despair sets in.
I fall to my knees on the mountainside, hundreds of tiny shards of obsidian piercing my thin Desh as my heart
pounds against my chest like some feral beast trying to escape a cage.
My fading breath rasps in my scratchy throat and hot, salty tears trickle from the corners of my tightly closed
eyes.
I have failed.
In my desperation to reach help, I have pushed myself too far, su,ering for days without sleep and very little
sustenance.
It has taken its toll.
I am going to die.
With that condemning thought, I submit to my fate, and am counting down to what I'm sure will be my "nal
breath, when I drift back into the recent past, back to that day that changed everything.
THE FLAME OF AN ORPHAN -Tahnee Dilger A cloud of darkness sweeps over me. I have a purpose. I would make the murdering prince die. I gasp for breath,
drowning in my own tears. My vision goes black and I fall to the Door, my legs useless against the numbness
inside me. In front of me Lela whines, unhappy at seeing me so distraught over her pain. I reach out, placing a
trembling hand over the wound in her matted black fur. Please I think, concentrating hard on my beloved friend,
please don't die on me now.
My mind Dashes back and I see the dagger Dying through the air, straight for me. I see a Dash from my side as Lela
jumps in front of me and hear my scream, a plea, for her to run. To leave. To Dee, to save herself.
But here she is laying on the cold marble Door, chilled by the winds Dowing through the many windows not yet
closed by the palace servants. My hands tighten involuntarily. Fuelled by my anger, I have enough strength to
stand, my chin held high.
The Crown Prince meets my cold, blank stare.
Fantasy Adventure Writer’s Camp Annabel Rogers You close your eyes and unleash an agonising scream as the pain sets in. You can feel blood running down your
legs, gushing out of the wound on your upper thigh. As you take your "nal, agonising breaths, you contemplate
how you came to this, betrayed, friendless, alone and dying.

It all started when the slaves started to talk to you.
To be fair, you were a slave as well, but least you were a useful one, unlike all of these untrained, unsold ones.
You also had a very high ranking master; Sephin Veeno, the feared and revered slave trader; in any case, you were
far superior to these slaves.
They didn't seem to care.
THE POWER WITHIN - Emmagen Litchfield ‘Eulages Magic School’. It should be an amazing place to learn magic and "nd your inner potential, but when you
DON’T have a power it’s worse than hell. And every day is the same.

I sigh, reluctantly hobbling over to my locker, Dinching as sharp manicured nails dig through my T-shirt and rip
the Desh of my shoulder. I bite back the tears as it begins. Rowena, the epitome of a stuck-up Barbie doll, shouts
for the world to hear how I have no power, yet I still attend this school. Turning to face me, she maliciously
snickers, as she lifts her pointer "nger slightly. I jolt forward, as if a hook is wrenched into my belly button, with
the chain leading to her. My body helplessly Dings across the hall like a rag doll. Tears rolling down my cheeks, I
place my shaking hands underneath me and force myself upwards. She treats me like I’m her personal puppet.
Why don’t I stop her? No, that’s right, I’m too shy to even look at her. Grabbing the locket around my neck, my
mother’s strength lights up inside me as if she’s still alive. But only for a moment, before it extinguishes into
nothing.
Shanae Kelman Red raw anger gushed through me like crazy river rapids, as I stormed out of Galina. I'd never had an aggressive
argument with a friend before and it was this that made me most angry. I didn't care what dangers were outside.
I just needed to get away, to get fresh air. Blinded by anger, I walked the wrong way.
Darkness closed around me as I entered the dangerous forest with no clue where I was and no weapon or
protection. Dim moonlight dappled the overgrown path ahead. The gloomy shadowed trees loomed over me as
if threatening to bend down and swallow me in darkness. I stopped walking. A terrible feeling that I was being
watched crept up my spine. I spun around to "nd two large, bright, purple eyes staring back at me.
My heart stopped. I immediately knew where I was. This was Dragon Forest.
Finn Sturman (Year 10) was able to
use one of the schools 3D printers
to print out a mount for his Go
Pro. The Go Pro will then be
mounted to a Drone. The 3D
printers continue to show their
potential.
U12 Netball
On 25th August 5 ASHS students attended
the U12 Netball Carnival hosted by Marlin
Coast in Cairns.
We were able to win 7/10 games for the
day and come home with the Bronze
Medallion. Our "rst carnival with a boy
representing ASHS and well done to
Kayden for coping with all of the girl talk on
the day. All students were excellent
ambassadors for the school and enjoyed
the day's play.
Community Engagement Schedule for Tablelands Sport
and Recreation Plan Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella has called on the community to get involved in developing the next sport and
recreation plan for the Tablelands region. “This plan is about making sure we have a diverse range of sport and recreation
opportunities and that all residents have access to good facilities to keep them active and healthy”, said Mayor Paronella.

FROM THE SPORTS DESK The term has drawn to a close and it has been wonderful to see so many students getting involved, having a go, showing amazing
sportsmanship and commitment to sport through the term. We have been fortunate enough to be able to provide the students with
many sporting opportunities this term and we are all thrilled at how many students take advantage of these.
Netball
Thank-you to Dale Constant who has been running a weekly netball competition for the students and sta, to be involved in. The
students had a wonderful time during lunch competing against the teachers and their friends. The juniors and seniors competition
enabled students to be involved in a sport that maybe they don’t normally play. Thank-you and well done to all of the sta, and kids
involved.
Interschool Touch Football– Student Success
Last week we celebrated the success of our students who participated in the Interschool Touch Football. This week we were able to
award Liam Haines with his sportsmanship trophy that he was nominated for. Well done Liam and you should be very proud of your
behaviour and attitude on the "eld each week.
Cricket-T20 Helpers
Thank-you to Kylie Coleman and the students below who have assisted this week in the Primary School T20 competition. They are
umpiring and scoring and Kylie is assisting in the running of the event.

This week’s news in brief: Start of Term 4:
School resumes on Tuesday October 3 with a number of events scheduled that week. Our next parade on October 5
sees all candidates for 2018 leadership roles give their election speeches to the school community. Students
nominating for Captain, Student Council and House Captain roles will address the parade. Parents and community
members are welcome to attend the parade which starts at midday. The candidates then have their interviews the
following day. Mid semester report cards are distributed on Wednesday October 11. Parents can contact their
child's teacher directly to arrange an interview to discuss their progress in academic, behaviour and effort areas
should they wish. Information from the reporting period is used by staff to work with students on completion of
work and goal setting to ensure that they finish their year with the best possible outcomes.
Q Parents:
The QParents web and mobile application provides a more convenient, easier way for parents and legal guardians
of Queensland state school students to interact with their child’s school directly from your mobile device. We will
be emailing an invitation to all parents with a current email address recorded with the school. If you have not
received an invitation please call 40305217.
QTAC Applications:
Applications must be made for all year 12 students applying for a tertiary course in 2018 with the due date for "on
time" applications being September 30. Students paying by Bpay must complete this by September 27 and all
students are still able to apply for some of the courses after the 30th though the cost of doing so increases from $37
to $138 . Students intending to take a gap year are advised to apply this year and then defer the course after being
accepted in it. Guidance Officer Mrs Gloria Robinson has limited appointments for Year 12 students prior the end of
term; students seeking guidance support will need their LUI number and, if on Centrelink, must also have their
customer reference number.
Year 11 QCS preparation:
Year 11 students will begin their planning for the 2018 QCS test next term with test preparation beginning on
October 4. Students will complete a practice test so that they can identify areas that they need to focus on to
maximise their chances of success when completing the test in 2018. This practice test is sent away to be marked
with students provided with detailed feedback about their responses late in Term 4.
