The preparation for the 150
celebration fete is well
underway. Thank you to all
the parents who are
supporting this event.
Each assembly Mr Nielsen is
taking students back in time to
gain an understanding of the
different rituals that occurred in
schools. You may wish to attend
and remember what you did at
your assemblies.
NAPLAN Results
Last week the year 3, 5 and 7
students were given their
NAPLAN results from the testing
conducted in May. As always the
results only measure a student’s
performance on the day in a test
situation and provide one source
of information about student
achievement.
Teachers will examine the results
in further detail however initial
information indicates.
The progress between
testing in numeracy for
year five and seven has
been quite exceptional
with 96% of year 7 and
year 5 students showing
high or medium growth.

In reading 51.3% of year 3
students, 35% of year 5
students and 38.9% of
students achieved results
in the highest two levels.
Students’ writing was
consistent with previous
years with solid results,
but with only a small
number of students in the
highest band. Their
writing demonstrated
well-structured texts with
a strong grasp of
grammar. Students use
very ‘safe’ language and
teachers are working with
students to improve the
vocabulary used in
writing. Your child may
have spoken about ‘WOW’
words.
The introduction of Jolly
Grammar across the
school in term 1 2015 has
provided a consistent
approach to teaching
Grammar and Spelling.
We are expecting this
initiative to be reflected in
our results soon.
There was an increase in
the number of students
who did not sit the test as
they were withdrawn by
their parents, were on
family holiday or absent
due to illness. In the year
seven cohort only 76% of
students participated.

Emergency Foster Carers Needed
Can you help a child in a crisis
situation? Learn more about
becoming an emergency foster
carer today.
Emergency foster carers provide
a safe home environment and
support for children who need to
be taken out of an unsafe
situation at short notice.
Deputy Chief Executive Etienne
Scheepers said emergency foster
care can involve looking after a
child for an overnight stay or for
up to 2 weeks.
“It’s an unfortunate reality that
sometimes there are children in
the community that need to
urgently be removed from
unsafe situations,” Etienne said.
“These children need a safe
place to go when they are unable
to be cared for by their parents
or other family members.
“We need people who are caring,
can be contacted at short notice
and at any time of the day or
night, are willing to open up their
homes to a child in need and are
happy to complete the
assessment and training to
become an emergency foster
carer.
“Emergency and short term
foster carers are often skilled at
helping children who have
experienced abuse and trauma.
“Being an emergency foster carer
can certainly have its challenges,
but it can also be extremely
rewarding.
“We’ve had lots of people tell us
that becoming an emergency
carer has been one of the most
confronting yet best things they
have ever done.”
All emergency foster carers
receive thorough training and
assessment before a child is
placed with them.
If you would like to become an
emergency foster carer or find
out more about the different
types of foster care, visit the
become a foster carer page on
the DECD internet.

In Week 5 the Year 3’s and 4’s from
Lynette Kaeding and Caroline Zada’s
class went on camp to Mylor
Adventure Camp from Monday to
Wednesday. We were lucky to have
great weather for the whole camp
and the instructors were ready to
get all the students engaged in the
activities. Each of the activities
Year 3-4 Mylor Adventure Camp
developed student’s team building skills. For example, students had to
work together to make a bridge across an imaginary lake without falling
in using planks of wood, milk crates and rope. Students also developed
their risk taking skills by having the courage to take a leap off the
flying fox platform and fly 200 metres along the second biggest flying
fox in South Australia. Another highlight for many students was the
giant swing, each student had a role and together they cheered on each
team member to be brave and go on the giant swing. Students were able
to encourage each other and work together in new ways to achieve
amazing things!

Many exciting things have been happening for our friends at our partner school in Flores,
Sekolah Santa Josefa. Students started the school year on Monday August 8th. After nine days
of school they had a public holiday for Independence Day but nevertheless met at school for
games and parade. Part of the ceremonies included presenting the fact of our new
partnership to the community in the form of a large banner which was firstly paraded
around the community on the front of a car, and then hung in the school foyer. The Santa
Josefa community was presented with the idea of 'flat travellers' where, over the coming year,
Crafers Primary and Sekolah Santa Josefa will send photos of their matching 'selves' (in
laminated drawing form) undertaking daily school tasks. Our hope in developing a partner
school relationship is that students from both communities gradually strengthen
their intercultural understandings of what it is like to be a child in another part of the world.

On Wednesday, 24th August, students across the school gathered in the gym for an
afternoon of musical fun and mayhem with the Music Is Fun band.
In the lead up to their performance, the band provided us with the lyrics and music to
all the songs to be performed. This enabled all students to be familiar with the songs
and to join in singing on the day. Many students also had the opportunity to be part of
the performance by dressing up in fabulous costumes provided by the band. Some
older students volunteered to choreograph a dance to Taylor Swift's, "Welcome to New
York", while others bravely sang "If You're Out There" with minimal accompaniment
from the band.
The band did a great job of selecting songs to suit all ages and it was a particular delight
to witness the older students wholeheartedly belting out numbers such as, "Oh where
is my Hairbrush?", and "Juicy, Juicy Green Grass".
Another highlight was seeing everyone on their feet dancing to the final number, "Life Is
A Party". Yet again, the Music Is Fun band showed us that music really is fun.
