A message from Deb Welcome back to term 3. Our first week back went well. Children seemed relaxed and ready to get back into learning. 1M Learning Expo
In the last week of term I had the pleasure of visiting 1M on the Wednesday afternoon where they presented their Inquiry and Home Learning for the term. It is important the learning dispositions children use as Inquirers are drawn on throughout their school day. Children are natural Inquirers at home and the home learning they engaged with reflected this. The interdisciplinary nature of Inquiry means that
many curriculum areas can be connected to an Inquiry. A key element for success is ensuring we have a relational and ‘Inquiry Culture’ evident at all times in our classrooms where students are invited to take risks and are challenged. A purposeful connection to their learning, their peers and their learning environment is also important. When we follow students’ curiosity, they see their interests are being valued. The quality of 1M’s presentations and their confident communication was a credit to all
involved. Firstly the children, then Alex for her facilitation role and finally the support of the parents at home. There is a page in this newsletter devoted to this event, have a look.
Assistant Principal Teaching and Learning Role As you would be aware Catherine has taken on the role of ‘Senior Leader in Learning Improvement Primary’ for our partnership. Bec Anderson, a parent, has an important notice in
this newsletter about a farewell gift from the students and their families for Catherine. More information about her farewell event will be sent out soon. Liam McComb will be doing this role until the end of the year. We are currently looking to find a replacement for Liam’s technology specialist role. Positive Community Feedback about our school and our Student Ambassadors
Part of the Student Ambassadors’ role in our school is to run the parent tours. After a parent tour last term a future parent emailed Nikki to provide some positive feedback about the excellent work of these students and to comment on the positive feel of our school: “I was on the Principal’s Tour of the school this morning and just wanted to say thank you so much for your time. You have such a wonderful school with a very warm feel to it. You and the
Ambassadors should be proud of the school and how it was presented to us today.” Ann-Marie Staniford. Pupil Free Day Monday August 6th Staff will be moderating samples of students learning with teachers from other schools. Moderation is an important part of our assessment processes to ensure we have enough evidence to demonstrate children have reached a particular achievement standard. Teachers sharing across schools in our area ensures
consistency of judgement between schools in our area: Parkside, Unley, Highgate, Glen Osmond and Linden Park. Kind regards Deb Brassington Principal

Farewell gift for Catherine Murch from GPS students and their families. Dear students and families of Goodwood Primary School. As you are aware from school emails, Catherine Murch ("Ms Murch"), has taken up a new position within the
Department for Education for the remainder of 2018. As a parent who has known and worked closely with Catherine for many of her 9 years at Goodwood Primary School I would like to organise a farewell gift for her on behalf of all students and families of GPS, both past and present. This it to thank her for the substantial contributions she made towards the teaching and well-being of all students including her time as a classroom teacher, a playground yard-duty confidante, and more recently as a member of the school leadership who worked closely with every classroom teacher and all
students during their Inquiry-Based-Learning (IBL) activities, and who also was the staff member on the Governing Council's Student Learning and Well-Being Subcommittee. If you would like to contribute to Catherine's farewell gift please email [email protected] to gain electronic bank details, find me in the GPS gym on most Friday mornings between 8-9am during hockey training, or place cash in a clearly marked and sealed envelope and leave it in the GPS front office. Please include the
names and messages you'd like included on the card or if you would prefer to remain anonymous. No indication will be made as to the size of any donation! Suggestions of gift ideas are welcome. The gift will be presented to Catherine at the farewell event that the school is going to organise for later during this term. Kind regards, Bec Anderson (Zoe, year 6, Mia now in yr 8).

Goody Patch Happenings
During term 2, 3M enjoyed Goody Patch through many curriculum areas: the Arts, English,
Media, Science through Gardening and Cooking Info from Graeme.
Come along to the next Working Bee Sunday August
9am-12noon.
What you did: I made a poster about Albert Einstein and a diorama. It was a Spinosauras.
What you learnt: I learnt that Einstein was most interested in gravity, time and the speed of light. He worked out that the less gravity there is, the slower time goes. And the more gravity there is, time goes faster. If you go near a black hole time goes faster. If you stay there for 5 minutes it would be 10 years on Earth.
I also learnt that a Spinosauras is as tall as a 5 storey building and 25 metres long. - Jake B

Chinese News
Goodwood’s Chinese Chess Club: Starting this Wednesday the 1st of august
象棋 Xiang Qi (pronounced syung chi) is known
in English as Chinese Chess. It is the Chinese equivalent of the Western game of Chess. Like Chess, it is a strategy board game for two players. It does however, have some differences in its appearance and the names of the pieces, as well as their set up and movement.
Although the exact age of the game is debated, Chinese Chess is certainly a very old game. It is still very popular and continues to be played by many people in China today.
As a way of sharing some Chinese cultural activities with the school community I will be running a Chinese Chess club every Wednesday at lunch time in the OSHC room. If you are interested in learning about the game and would like to have a go at playing, please come along and discover the fun and challenge of this ancient game!
Regards, Mai Lao Shi (Grace Myers – Mandarin Teacher)
During the term break, the school had some fabulous facelift.
The primary girls and boys toilets downstairs have been refurbished, with new a floor, tiles, sinks and a new coat of paint.
The North Unit teachers resource room, received new storage cupboards and now has a door to the North Playground.
Our OSHC had a complete kitchen overhaul. This will be a great resource for the school. Holiday Renovations

Six students represent Goodwood PS at SAPSASA Hockey
In the second to last week of last term, five Goodwood Primary School students (Finn, Sascha, Aiden, Max and Zoe) participated in the SAPSASA hockey carnival representing the Adelaide South East district. As well as these five students, Ginger played goalie for the team from Pt Pirie.
Max O writes “The GPS boys travelled down to Grange together each day. Our days kicked off with a brutal game of spot O in the car, which became a habit, even for the parents. Over the week we played 10 games of full-field hockey in a round-robin competition (every team plays every other team in their division) against various districts from across South Australia. One of the best things about SAPSASA is missing a whole week of school and instead, playing my favourite sport and meeting tonnes of new people including friends and foe. The matches were hard, some at the crack of dawn with the frosty grass and cold, bitter wind. Breaks between matches gave us the chance to mingle with players from other districts or watch the other matches, including some of the girls’ games. The boys’ team played in Division 2, drawing with Pt Pirie in 1st place. In the end, no matter what place we came, everyone had fun.”
Zoe A says “One of my favourite games was when we played against Ginger’s Pt Pirie team. This was because I was a
striker and she was a goalie, and although I didn’t manage to score a goal against her we still won! The girls’ team
played in Division 1, and came 4th
overall, but 3 of the teams ended up with equal points for 2nd
place. So I suppose that
means we really came 3rd
! I found that my hockey skills improved a lot over the week, thanks to my amazing coach Jan
Tregenza. I also made lots of new friends from different schools in the Adelaide South East district and now I see some
of them when I play hockey for Goodwood PS on Friday afternoons, and at my club games on Sunday mornings. It was
fantastic week.”
Congratulations to 16N on their
assembly.
The class shared their achievements
in work, and their amazing
fundraising and rug collection for
the RSPCA.

SALA on Goodwood Road 2018 Notan fence art exhibition
For SALA 2018, the Goodwood Road Business Association presents a collection of Notan artworks created by SALA artists exhibiting in Goodwood Road businesses. Many thanks to Goodwood Primary School for use of its fence and to our Artists who have participated. Notan is a Japanese word meaning “Light-dark balance”. The artworks are created by cutting shapes from a rectangle and flipping these. Each artist was invited to create a work using this Notan practice. From left to right, the artworks presented are:
“Joy” by Karen Puttock, who is exhibiting at Goodwood Community Centre and Lemongrass Thai Bistro. “Eco Entwined” by Brooke Goyne, who is exhibiting at Everything Vegan. “On a whim” by Kylie Nichols, who is exhibiting at Goodwood Library. “The diligent bureaucrat” by Aiyudot Khom. Aiyudot is G o o d w o o d R o a d ’ s c o m m u n i t y a r t i s t . “Swallows” by Alli Symons, who is exhibiting at GP Langridge Real Estate. “Wild Technology” by Dulce Maria Diaz-Llanos Montes,
who is exhibiting at Candela Latin American. “SALA” by Aiyudot Khom. Please visit all the SALA Exhibitions on Goodwood Road during August for the SALA Festival, and come along to SALA on Saturday on August 25 for free arty activities for kids and “Where Art Meets Food and Wine in Gilbert Street.
River Deep Fundraiser Our names are Abbey, Emma and Oscar. We are past Goodwood Primary School students, now in Year 9 at Adelaide High School.
We will be participating in the World Challenge Expedition to Borneo and Malaysia in 2019. In Borneo we will help disadvantaged communities, this may involve tasks such as building shelters, toilet facilities, reforestation or conservation. While over there we will also take part in activities that will teach us a lot about leadership and life skills.
Part of the challenge to participate is raising the funds ourselves and fundraising is a big part of this.
We would love for you all to join us for a fun evening at Millswood Bowling Club, featuring long time parent of GPS, Tania Brennan.
To purchase tickets go to eventbrite.com.au and search

Crossing Monitors
During the school holidays, a new student crossing was installed on Hampton St South. Please be mindful whilst driving this street, as students should all now be using the crossing. We are currently negotiating appropriate training for new crossing monitors.
New Crossing on Hampton Street South
In week 9 of Term 2, Ginger was lucky enough to get to be the goalie for the Pt Pirie SAPSASA Hockey team. Ginger played 10 games in the
5 days that she was there. The Port Pirie team ranked 5th overall, in the division one girls teams. Ginger got to make lots of new friends from different parts of South Australia. She even got to play against students from Goodwood Primary. ‘I enjoyed playing for the other
team because I got to play against my friends and make new friends at the same time’. - Ginger
