PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
It has been great to see the return of sunshine this week! Not only because of the relative warmth but also as it
has allowed the boys to get outside in the playground and run off their excess energy. I think this has supplied
relief for the boys and their teachers in equal measure!
As the change of season is almost upon us, it is a good time to take stock of your son’s summer uniform. As
teenagers tend to grow before our eyes, the shorts you bought in February may not fit in September. To avoid
all the hassles that are involved with a last minute rush on the uniform shop or Lowes, now is a good time to get
your son to try on his summer uniform.

2016/2017 SCHOOL CAPTAIN ELECTIONS
These last few weeks have been busy with electing our prefects for the next 12 months. From the seven prefects selected two weeks ago, five of these excellent students have put their hands up to stand for School Captain or Vice Captain. The candidates were: Jacky Chen, Murali Chinnappa, Andrew James, Jackson Plumb and Pathik Shah. The candidates were tasked with writing a two-minute speech to answer the question of why it is important for great leaders to be positive role models. They presented their speeches to their Year 11 cohort today and each captured the attention of their peers admirably, showing what great leaders we already have here at Ashfield Boys High School. Each of their speeches was different; some were very personal, some quoted great historical figures and some based theirs on the attributes of role models closer to home but all of their speeches were extremely inspirational and exciting to listen to. Good luck to all of you!

ABHS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
ABHS hosted a Chess Tournament in the library. We had a record attendance and chess master commented that the standard of play is improving. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the day, and some who started the day as non-players acquired the rudiments of the game.

VISUAL PUZZLES
Visual puzzles provide an opportunity for students to train their critical and analytical thinking
skills. Students need to pay attention to various details in the puzzle in order to compare,
contrast and generalise patterns. Here are students of 8 Kratos having a crack at some of the
puzzles.
How quickly can you solve the following problems?

SCATTERED SKIES
Year 11 Physics has just begun their final
module, The Cosmic Engine. Here the
students are using spectroscopes to
observe different light sources. Using the
spectral lines scientist and students can
deduce the elements contained in the light
source, may it be a common flourescent
light tube, our sun or a distant star.

HOW ABSURD!
This term Year 10 Drama students are learning about the Theatre of the Absurd. Throughout this unit they are introduced to such influential playwrights as Samuel Beckett, Eugene Ionesco, Harold Pinter and Tom Stoppard. As Absurdist theatre was born directly out of the devastations of World War II, students are exploring the ways in which historical climate affects the artistic community of the time. They are learning to engage with unfamiliar and complex ideas of
existentialism and the meaning of life and how these ideas translate into theatrical work. They are learning to analyse and engage with this highly intellectual form of theatre and apply its conventions to their own work. In the photos below students are in the process of creating their own pieces of Absurdist theatre, which are centered on conflict. Later this term students will be completing a costume design assessment task focusing on symbolic nature of details
designers use to support the creation of three-dimensional characters.

STICK – IN SCIENCE
These past two weeks we have continued to see more changes in the Professor’s appearance. His colouring has become lighter and as a result, the Professor seems more ‘approachable’ after losing his intimidating dark and shiny gloss he had on last week. Last week we had a volunteer visitor who is familiar with phasmids and had a suspicion that the Professor might not actually be of the Goliath species…!
So, as a part of our excursion to the Zoo last Tuesday we investigated by examining the various species of phasmid on display and we did in fact discover that the Professor does not appear anything like the Goliath phasmid. There was a species there that appeared to match our own but, its name plaque was missing! So we are now certain the Professor is not a Goliath….but uncertain of what species he actually is! The investigation begins… Below are some close up pictures of the Professor’s developing wings, and Luca looking sheepish as the Professor climbs atop his head whilst Xiao is trying to measure his length.

YEAR 7 ZOO EXCURSION
Ashfield boys had a wild time at Taronga Zoo last Tuesday. The boys enthusiastically guided themselves through the multitude of species found at the zoo.
The birds of the bird show thrilled the audience with low flying feats.
Congratulations and thanks goes out to the boys for their enthusiastic and mature approach to the day.

Class 7 Confucius has been studying Dr Frankenstein and his creation this term. It has been a thrilling and horrifying adventure so far and everyone is enjoying the topic. The tasks that 7C have been working on include creating a diary entry as if they are Dr Frankenstein and have just finished creating their monster. This has allowed us to be imaginative and to demonstrate our knowledge of what we have learnt in this topic. Wazza Tariq Silas Newton 7 Confucius Team
This week in our Science classes we recorded our phasmid (a Goliath stick insect) ‘Professor Bubanies’. Our class has been monitoring him over the past semester. We had to measure him and weigh him and he has grown dramatically over the past 20 weeks. We also noticed that he has started to grow spikes and wings. 7 Confucius aim to now maintain his current habitat and monitor his further progress during Term 3. Yesh Kumar Blake Williams 7 Confucius
