Volunteering recognition It was great to see the boys recognised for their volunteering and service to community this week. The NSW Centre for Volunteering awards were held this Monday and the school received recognition for the SRC executive team and also individual awards for boys who had shown exceptional service to the community. Building update Building work on the new student services Administration building has hit a new milestone. This week carpet went in, some of the joinery has been installed, and a mature tree arrived to start off the landscaping. With the end of the Year 12 exams noisy work can start again and the pace of building should speed up. To make sure that we try and get the building done as quickly as possible we made the decision that the end of term exams for Year 11 will be held in the gymnasium rather than the hall.

PLAYING THE CLASSICS
On Thursday 23rd August, students from 7D Music class learned to play Ludwig Van Beethoven’s renowned melody from Symphony No. 9, ‘Ode to Joy’, on guitar. All Year 7 students are currently studying the unit ‘Instruments of the Orchestra’ and are listening to a variety of orchestral pieces.

NSW STATE MUSIC CAMP
During the first week of Term 3, Benjamin Munro and Alfie Jellett of 7B represented ABHS and played music for five and a half hours a day. The State Music Camp is located at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation in Narrabeen. The Year 7 camp is also at this centre. The State Music Camp is a great way to spend five days making beautiful music. The accommodation is amazing. All of the students are placed in cabins with people from your school or other state schools. This way, you would at least end up with one friend. What’s more, the State Music Camp staff will make sure all participants are feeling okay at all times. The camp is surrounded by nature; there is wildlife at every corner. Just the right place to be.

MUSIC TUITION AT ABHS:
We currently have some incredible music tutors at ABHS. They are all industry professionals, have studied at the highest level, and are very effective, passionate educators. They are Carl Morgan for guitar and bass, Ivan Jordan for drums and drum ensemble, Sean Valenzuela for piano, Nathan Parks for saxophone, flute, clarinet, Jacob Parks for trumpet and trombone, Emma and Kirrily for strings and string ensemble. They all have vacancies at the moment for new students. If your son has expressed an interest in playing a musical instrument or joining the drumming ensemble, the tutors are happy to provide a trial lesson to both meet students and explain what is involved. Please see Mr Pieterse in the CAPA staff room or email me at [email protected] if you are interested.

BUILDING BRIDGES ACROSS SCIENCE WEEK
For the past week Year 8 students have all participated in a Straw Bridge competition where the students worked in groups to create a simple straw bridge that fulfils a set of predetermined requirements. Students apply their knowledge of forces and gain an understanding of how different shapes and structures bear and redistribute weight.

STAGE 4 STEM PROJECTS
Year 7 has completed the first round of the ‘Game changer’ competition and two winners from each class have progressed through to the final round. Congratulations to all the Year 7 students on creating amazing learning tools with Makey –Makey. 8T completed their Sphero chariot challenge last week. Students focused on using recycled materials that would ensure the chariot could move at a speed of 2m/s. They experienced problems the first chariot designers in Rome would have faced –which is making a wheel that moves with the chariot! The students created some innovative designs to solve their problem of reducing friction to increase speed. Sphero robots were instrumental in helping students become independent learners! 8H is busy this week discovering the Sphero and getting ready to race their chariots on Friday. The winners of Year 7 Round 1 are:
