Exchange Student from Rome

Queste quattro settimane a Cerdon College sono state davvero importanti per me. Grazie ancora, Ludovica.

These four weeks at Cerdon College have been truly important for me. For the first time in my life I departed on my own and went to the other side of the world to put myself to the test and understand how to survive so far away from my everyday life. The responses have been great and a big thanks to the magnificent people I met here in Sydney. I have met many people who were curious of my own culture and allowed me to experience their own and all the things I wanted to do, that was what I wanted the most. It was also a pleasure to help the teachers because they made me feel very useful, as if somehow I made a small contribution to your school. It is certain that you all have left a mark in my life and I hope you were happy you meet someone from the opposite side of the world. Thanks again, Ludovica (translated by Emily Del Principe)

Legal Studies Excursion On Wednesday 6th August, Year 11 Legal Studies students went on

an enthralling excursion to the Downing Centre Courts and Parliament House of NSW. At the Downing Centre Courts, we were given the opportunity to independently venture into the many

courtrooms and sit in on real cases which varied from traffic offences to theft and assault charges. Here, we were able to experience first-hand how justice could be achieved through the

legal system. Some groups got the opportunity to converse with magistrates and court personnel. Parliament House was next on our agenda. The Hon Tony Issa, MP for Granville, welcomed students

and provided a tour around the area before we were ushered into the Legislative Assembly to observe Question Time. This helped us gain an understanding of parliamentary proceedings, as we watched on as ministers debated vocally and somewhat raucously with one

another. Overall this experience was one of enrichment and great intrigue.

Victory in the Pacific Commemoration

On August 14th, Ms W Young and four Year 10 students - Portia Cheung, Leanne Purkis, Zoya Shah and Catalina Valdivia - were invited to attend the Victory in the Pacific Commemoration organised

by the RSL and Diggers Clubs of the local area. The Cerdon College representatives joined other participants, including students and teachers from twelve other schools in the march from Cabra Vale

Diggers Club to Cabra Vale Memorial Park. The ceremony included reflections by dignitaries, hymns, the national Anthems of the United States, Great Britain, New Zealand and Australia and a minute’s silence. After this wreaths were laid, including one laid by Cerdon College

students. The organisers of the events were very appreciative of the attendance of all the schools, including Cerdon College. At the conclusion of the ceremony there was a lovely lunch at the Diggers

Club, enjoyed by all.

Year 9 Religion Incursion 19th August

So as to complement the work that Year 9 students had completed for their ‘Mary and the Saints’ unit, students watched a production call Mary of the Cross MacKillop, performed by Starrs Productions. The actors provided a performance that was both informative and entertaining and ensured that the life events of Australia’s only Catholic saint was bought to life. On a few occasions students were included in the performance and this added to the enjoyment of the event. The performers commented on the maturity of the Cerdon students and it is hoped that future grades will also be able to see the production. Mr N Mulheron Religious Education Co-ordinator

PDHPE and Sport Report NSWCCC Netball After our spirited showing at the PDSSSC Netball Championships last month, the College Netball squads returned to Jamison Park Penrith on Wednesday August 13 for the NSWCCC Netball Championships. All players contributed their best effort and played in a number of tight matches. Given that it was a statewide event, there were a number of strong teams at the Gala Day that prevented our squads from progressing into the finals. Whilst there were many great individual performances on the day, it was the cooperation and camaraderie amongst the players that was most impressive. Congratulations to the following students for representing the College with pride: Year 7-8 Squad: Martha Fua, Abyssinia Abaddi, Shuashawnee Hancock, Monique Khattar, Layla Toufan, Dominique Nasr, Louise O’Neill, Shiarna Tarasenko Year 9-10 Squad: Daniella Kady, Susie Anna Sukarieh, Rachael Vella, Lavinia Fua, Julia Achmar, Jessica Machin, Rachel Newman, Catherine Raftopoulos, Hayley Fisher, Melissa Barron Year 11-12 Squad: Alanna Lee, Nivaaz Sehmbhi, Karla Ignazzi, Rebecca Chamoun, Christina El Khouri, Rachel Lockhart, Cheyenne Hancock and Tyler Nicholas I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Corinne Irish, Tyler Nicholas and ex student Nichole Vella who umpired on the day. The three students willingly offered their services and should be commended for conducting themselves very professionally on the day. Many thanks to Miss Hanson, Miss Meduri and Miss L Herrera for organising, preparing and coaching the teams. PDSSSC Dance On Friday August 15, Cerdon College performed exceptionally well at the PDSSSC Dance competition, which was held at Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Penrith. In an amazing overall performance, Cerdon finished in 1st place, which is testament to the dedication and commitment applied by our students and coaches over numerous weeks in training. The College entered teams in the Jazz, Contemporary, Cultural, Hip Hop and Soloist categories and competed against high-level opposition.

As this event is convened annually by Cerdon College, I would like to congratulate Mrs Sharp for again successfully organising and running the event and for preparing the Jazz Squad. In addition, thank you to Ms Murfet for her assistance in organising the event and preparing the Contemporary and Hip Hop squads, to Ms Mahrous for preparing the Cultural squads and to Mrs Gallina and Miss Parker for attending and supervising the students on the day. Special mention must go to Amy Camilleri of Year 11, who helped to coach the Hip Hop squads. A big thank you to our highly skilled Entertainment students, who assisted in ensuring the sound, music and lighting was appropriate at the event. Well done to all involved and we look forward to defending the title at next year’s competition! Bstreetsmart Youth and Road Trauma Forum. On Tuesday August 21, Year 10 attended the Bstreetsmart Youth and Road Trauma Forum at All Phones Arena at Homebush. In was an insightful event that presented a range of road safety issues in an interactive and engaging way to 10,000 school students from around Sydney. The forum focused on the consequences of decision making, which linked with the content studied in the Year 10 PDHPE Unit The Party. The students viewed a staged car crash scene that was caused by a number of factors. Students were then able to watch the emergency services respond and witness the physical, legal and emotional consequences of a car crash. Students were also able to engage with many interactive displays and collect information to help them to make safe decisions with regard to road safety. It was an interesting and important day for our students as they move towards learning how to drive. I would like to thank all of Year 10 for conducting themselves in a very mature way throughout the day and to Miss Brewer, Miss L Herrera, Miss N Herrera, Miss Hanson and Mrs Deegan for taking time out of their busy schedules to attend the excursion.
