exhibition and silent auction last week. This is the second group of Year 12 students from Mosman High who have chosen this pathway and it is a credit to them that in their final year of high school when they are rigorously engaged in preparation for the HSC, that they make the time to fund raise and focus on supporting others. Their activities have included a mini-market and more recently the art exhibition held at the Mosman Returned Serviceman’s Club. Parent Teacher Nights The final parent teacher evening took place on Thursday of week 1. For 2013 we followed a new format with 4 evenings. The final two evenings provided the opportunity for parents of Years 8. 9, 10 to choose the night they preferred. I would be grateful for any feedback regarding any aspect of the parent teacher evening format for 2013 as we are always trying to improve our practice. HSC here we come! Year 12 have one week for revision with their teachers before they begin their trial HSC examinations. Several years ago we decided to move the trial examinations to the start of the term. Many of our Year 12 students choose to do subjects with major works or languages and this allows those students to focus on the completion of this part of the actual HSC without pressure from trial examinations. Throughout the term, HSC students will be performing in music and drama, completing major works in visual art, design and technology, Industrial Technology timber and multimedia and textiles. Other students will be complet-ing their English extension 2 works or in Society and Culture their Personal Interest Projects (PIPs) and all language students will be completing their speak-ing and listening exams. Many of our Year 12 students do a number of subjects with major works so the earlier trial examinations support this. BYOD This term a Year 7 class will be trialling BYOD that is Bring Your Own Device. As the federal government will no longer be supplying laptops to all Year 9 students, schools will need to think of alternative ways of ensuring their students have access to technology in the classroom. At Mosman High we are

arrived. We welcome Qiqi (Frank) Liu who will stay with us for the next year. Mr Liu will work with our Chinese language teacher Mr Zhang and our stu-dents learning the Chinese language will be very lucky to have such wonderful teaching support. Recently Mr Zhang had his students entered an Aus-tralia-wide Chinese language competition. I am pleased to report that the students’ results placed Mosman High as the number 1 school for Chinese language learning in Australia. Congratulations Many of our students are achieving at the highest level. Congratulations to: * Max Alexander Year 11 who spent the two weeks of the holidays participating in the Harry Messel Science School. * Bernadette Frewen Year 12 hospitality student, who was a semi-finalist in the Manly Food and Wine festival and * Bernard Gandy Year 12 who was judged the top Vocational student for his work in the area of Entertainment in all of North Sydney Region. Bernard will now represent this region in the state Competition. * Jazz Band and Performance Bands both have been selected to perform at the Opera House and the * Dance ensemble performed beautifully at the Northern Sydney Region dance festival. Finally, two of our long serving teachers are retiring. Wayne Hodson who has been a fine teacher of computer technology and TAS subjects and Greg Foster who has been Head Teacher and teacher of history at Mosman High for almost two decades. Mr Foster will be returning to the school to ensure continuity of learning for his senior classes. On behalf of the Mosman High community I thank both of these teachers who have given so much to the teaching of students and public education.

looking at students bringing their own device (laptop, iPad etc) from home using the school's wireless to access the Internet. A year 7 class will be trialling bringing their own device and using it in all lessons. Any student who does not have access to a device will be loaned one through the library. At the moment we are devising the User Charter and BYOD policy. A busy term for parents! There are lots of interesting events being organised by our parents this term. The music committee is coordi-nating Jazz at the Gallery. This annual event held at the Mosman Art Gallery is an evening of fantastic jazz music, good food and wine and fun. If you haven't managed to attend before get a couple of friends or come yourself for a wonderful evening. Our newly formed technology committee has organised programming clubs for boys and girls as well as a robotics group. Please encourage your child to be part of this special program if they have an interest in computing. Of course the drama committee apart from supporting all the drama soirées throughout the year also have the Moscars where student work in film is acknowledged. This is a glitzy night and lots of fun! The sports committee continues to sponsor initiatives in sport including our gifted programs in basketball, dance and the newly commenced Futsal group. The sport committee is also designing uniforms for all our sporting teams. Confucius Centre The Confucius Centre is operating well and we hope to have our official opening sometime this term. Our new teacher from China has

From the Deputy Principals

This newsletter we highlight a further personal and social capability. Self-discipline involves students in managing and regulating their behaviours so they are able to persist and overcome personal obstacles. At the start of high school students should be able to show self-discipline in organising their learning (for example identifying and using strategies to manage time and resources). Over the years we have seen many students who are unable to self-manage in this area. It is a skill that goes beyond school. One tip parents can use to assist their child is to check the assessment schedule semester two. All assessment schedules have been issued to your child, however, if it can’t be found go to our website and look under your student’s year group. Put the assessments on a planner and mark on the planner two weeks before the start point for preparing for the assessment. Our advice is to place this on the fridge or your child’s bedroom door. It could look something like the diagram on the right for hypothetically a year 9 maths assessment. By Year 10 students should be able to manage and check their behaviours and performance in learning activities, applying their learning from school to their personal lives (for example using spread sheets and other organisers and apps) to plan and arrange activities at school and study outside of school. On the right is an example that works. The student should develop their own key to match their lifestyle and use different colours for each. The schedule should be done weekly to incorporate family lifestyle changes. Hopefully some of these ideas increase personal motivation and planning and teach your child to undertake work Independently. Good luck

Enviro Committee Report

Just a quick note to let you know of recent developments on the environment front. We are currently scoping out the feasibil-ity of introducing container recycling which is long overdue. I’ll keep you posted with developments. There is now a recycling bin for mobile phones in the library. This also recycles chargers and phone batteries. Please send

your old phones from home and help to save orangutans habitat. We are putting together a program for Enviro- week in term 4 and are still open to suggestions for speakers, film and activities. Please contact me if you have any thoughts. Till next time, Keep It Green!

The year 9 Design & Technology Accelerated students recently held a market day as part of their course. The brief from their teacher, Mrs Brown was to design and make eco friendly and sustainable products that could be sold in a market environment. The students rose to the challenge and came up with some amazing concepts. They sold their products during lunchtime and raised approximately $300 which was split among 7 charities that the students chose.

Sydney North Dance Festival

Mosman High School was represented for the first time at the Sydney North Dance Festival this term. The Dance Ensemble consisted of students from Years 8–10 who performed a contemporary dance piece titled Pengemis (Beggar). The students performed in three shows over two weeks of the festival and enjoyed the opportunity to perform in a large theatre with a sold out audience. Congratulations to all the students who gave a fantastic performance and for all their hard work throughout this semester. A special thank you to Ms Livingstone and her Year 10 Textiles class who made such beautiful costumes for the girls to perform in, your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Sports Committee Report

GAT Basketball - Year 8 Boys The Year 8 Boys had a terrific first season playing in the Manly Warringah Basketball Association Competition on Wednesday nights over Terms 1 and 2. Being placed in Division 1, Coach Luke Cooper (ex Sydney Kings point guard) had his work cut out for him with a team that had plenty of enthusiasm but had never played together, and had a wide range of experience and skill. The GAT training program - two sessions a week - soon paid off and it was a pleasure to watch the improvement of the team over the season. By the end of the season, the boys were winning against teams that had comprehensively beaten them in the early rounds. Luke and the boys are now looking forward to the spring competition. Thanks to Luke, Mr Webster and congratulations Lachlan, Josh, Adam, Jake, Alex, Gordon, Robbie and Reggie. GAT Futsal Following the success of the GAT Basketball Program, a GAT Futsal Program has been developed for years 7-

9. Trials were held in the last two weeks of term 2 and squads have been selected. Squad training will com-mence in Term 3 with coach Danny Beauchamp. Danny has played futsal for Australia in Brazil, and his coach-ing experience includes NSW City North and Australian Vikings Futsal Coach, UTS Northside Super League Academy Futsal Coach, KDSA Academy, Mosman FC, and North-bridge FC Academy. Two teams will compete in the Northern Beaches Futsal Association Summer Competition, and in the NSW Futsal Schools Championship in 2014. As there was a lot of interest in the trials, the Committee is hoping to run a Futsal Development Squad concurrently. This squad will train with Danny on Tuesday mornings, and feed into the GAT squad. For more information contact Mr Webster or the Sports Committee.

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2013

The Premier’s Challenge (PRC) is available for all NSW students in Kindergarten-Year 9. The challenge aims to encourage in students a love of reading for leisure and pleasure, and to enable students to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The Premier's Reading Challenge is an initiative of the NSW State Government with Dymocks, Children's Charities (principal sponsor) and Sun Herald (media partner). The Challenge runs from 1 March to 1 September 2013. All Student Reading Records are submit-ted online. Schools can register from 1 March. Student Reading Records can be entered online after this date. Students can enter their books as they read them. An electronic Student Reading Record is completed by either entering the PRC ID number of each book or clicking on titles from a drop-down PRC list. You can also use the drop-down list to select your

books to read as well as a booklist is in the library. Please see Ms Davey for any assistance. Students need to read 20 books to be eligible. The NSW Premier’s Student Volunteering Award Program What is Volunteering? Volunteering is activity you do of your own free will to meet genuine needs. Although you often learn new skills and knowledge, you receive no payment or advantage for your efforts. Volunteering involves giving your own time to help others. Many students see volunteering as 'doing good stuff', put-ting a smile on other people's faces and generally helping out. Why Volunteer? Although you volunteer to make some-one else happy, volunteering can make you feel great too. It also gives you the chance to develop new skills and knowledge that might help you in the future.

What is the NSW Premier’s Student Volunteering Awards Program? The NSW Premier’s Student Volunteer-ing Awards program encourages all stu-dents in NSW Public Schools to undertake a minimum of 20 hours of vol-unteering during the time they are en-rolled in Years 9 and 10. In appreciation of this contribution to the community, students will receive Prem-ier’s Certificates (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond respectively) for complet-ing 20, 40, 60 and 80 hours of volunteer-ing. A new certificate - Black Opal - acknowledges students that achieve 150+ hours of volunteering. Students need to log on to the student volunteering website and log their hours. Please see Ms Davey for assistance. Certificates are sent to schools annually for distribution. http://www.curriculumsupport.education.nsw.gov.au/volunteering/schools/premier/index.htm

Student Stars Kallen Grant won the Redlands Cup (snowboard GS D2) race allowing Mosman High to stand on the podium in the number 1 spot (as one of only two public schools represented – with many schools having special winter programs for their participants). This was a tough race on very icy conditions with a fair share of participants taking falls on the ice. A careful conservative consistent 2 runs saw Kallen emerge as the champion for his division. Competitors came from as far away as Canada. In the Sydney Interschools titles Kallen missed out on a bronze medal in Boarder Cross by 1/10th of a second, and came fourth. Both Kallen Grant (year 10) and

Teddy Nicholas (year 11) made it into the top 10 and will be progressing to the NSW titles late August representing Mosman high. We had 10 participants in the whole competition with many new year 7s. (see left) Charlotte Clare from Year 9 participat-ed in The Arts Unit Senior Music Camp (open to students in Years 8 -12) at the end of last term. The camps are held at Stanwell Tops, giving students from NSW Government schools a week of expert tutelage and the oppor-tunity to develop their performance skills. For more information about The Arts Unit: https://www.artsunit.nsw.edu.au/

Our concert band has been selected to perform at 2013 Festival of Instrumental Music on Tuesday 27 August at 7pm in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House. Tickets for the Banksia concert go on sale Tuesday 30 July through the Sydney Opera House Box Office. Three acts have been chosen to perform at the Arts North Drama Festival at NIDA in week 2 of this term. Congratu-lations Serae, Olivia, Claudia, Lucille & Isabella from year 11, Nick, Blake. Visual Art Report

We are coming into the final few weeks of the practical HSC date, 27 August. Most of the students are on track but this is the time for tweaking and refinement and there is still no time to be wasted. The trials are also upon us and we feel that the Year 12 students should be confident about how they negotiate this exam. They need to take the time to read what is being asked of them in the questions and to apply their obvious knowledge in their answer. This sounds simple but exam technique is a very important part of success. Good luck to all students. We have just received some very good news from the Silk Cut Awards for lino-cut prints. This is a nation wide award for block printing and the standard is very high indeed. Anna-Lisa Seidl and Mae Hartrick have had their prints selected for exhibition down in Glen Eira (Victoria) and are well in the running to win a prize.

Georgia McKern, Giorgia Dent and Julia Allan just missed out on final selection but should be congratulated for their efforts. The standard of the work that they produced and the concepts within was excellent. It must be remembered that we could only send 5 entries in over all years and this initial selection was a very hard one to make. Well done to all students! Our Special Art students in Year 7 have also succeeded in their work for NAIDOC week and their prints and embossings are on display in the Mosman Regional Gallery at the time of writing. The work was a group task and looks great on the wall. The theme this year was based on the Bark Treaty which was a very important issue for Indigenous land rights. It was also about the way we, as a people need to respect and treat the land we live in and our students produced a body of work that investigated these issues from a unique viewpoint. The actual finger-print prints represent the present while the embossings underneath represent the future implications of our actions. Well done to the students and their teachers Ms Melkman and Isaac Yeo (student teacher).

During the holidays the wallsin Art 4 and 5 as well as the computer pod in Art 5 were painted . The pod now has a better access because the dividing wall was removed to allow easy access to computers. This is a great improve-ment. There was not rest for Year 12’s who worked in the art block during the school holidays. Year 11 are working on their drawings and these are looking good. Year 9/10 are in the middle of projects for landscape and abstraction

and these should be some completed for the exhibition. Year 8 are working on their pet narrative paintings and year 7 are making block prints of bugs. It’s busy. The Mosman High exhibition this year is opening on Friday 30 August and all are invited. It will be open over the weekend between 11 and 3 as well. As usual the HSC works will be in the corridor and all other years in the rooms. See you there. Finally, congratulations to the students working with the Tabitha Foundation who will be going overseas during schoolies week to work on a building project. They raised around $11 000 from their Art Auction and will add this amount to their target of $45 000. We are proud of these students who will repre-sent Mosman High. A very big thank you to David Manuell who spent a huge amount of his time and effort in support-ing, organising and finding work for this fundraising auction. Cheers, the Art Department
