Message from the Headmaster

End of the Year 2018

Dear Parents/Caregivers

As Headmaster it is with a great deal of pride that I can report that 2018 has been another positive year in almost every area of College life.

Whether academically, pastorally or in the co-curricular area there has been much to celebrate.

The newsletter and website/Facebook have kept the College and its community up-to-date with all the achievements of our students throughout the year.

The year has had its difficulties though, some of which have continued from 2017.

I would emphasize again that each decision made by the College management or the Board itself has at its core the welfare of the boys and staff and/or that of the College as an educational institution.

We must continue to remind ourselves and our stakeholders that behaviour of any individual(s) which potentially harms the welfare of our community will not be tolerated.

My thanks to all staff, parents, Old Boys, volunteers and friends of the College who have contributed to a positive and worthwhile school year.

I wish you all a joyous family Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Nga mihi nui

Gary O’Shea MEd(Admin)

Headmaster

Chess

Huge congratulations to the Nelson College Chess Team who were bronze medalists in October placing 3rd in the country out of 18 qualifying schools at the Chesspower Nationals in Auckland. This is the highest placing for Nelson College at the Chesspower Nationals!!! Pakham Tlumang 6.5, Samuel White 6, Bawi Tlumang 6 and Rico Fraser 5, scoring a total of 23.5 from 9 games each. Well done to the team. Plus, Pakham came in 6th out of 237 competitors.

Future Problem Solving

On 2 November 2018, College and Prep attended the National Future Problem Solving Finals in Auckland. The topic was Cloud Storage and the scenario involved a large cloud storage provider that faced impending bankruptcy due to corruption, mismanagement and security threats. There was a concern that businesses and individuals may lose vital business, personal and health data stored in the cloud. The boys were concerned about the vulnerability and retrieve-ability of the data and came up with solutions that included DNA linked data, data tracking devices using unique codes (Junior) and creating an AI watchdog based on the human immune system to search for, isolate and surround suspicious code (Senior). The results were as follows:

Prep Whero - Sam Brookes, Jeremy Beatson, Adam Barton, Ben Roff - 2nd Place, Flag winners

Prep Maroon - Nick Peterson, Alex Bryant, Josef Fierek, Fenlon Bayley - 4th Place, 3rd Place Presentation of Action Plan

Nelson College Senior - Ronan Thompson, An Nguyen, Logan Smith, J-L Louverdis - 3rd Place Senior Scenario Writing.

Ella Taylor (Nelson College for Girls and coached by Sarah Watts) - 1st Place - National Champion

This result means that Ella Taylor, Nelson College Senior and Nelson Prep Whero will have the opportunity to represent New Zealand at the International Finals to be held in Amhurst (near Boston) USA in June 2019.

Congratulations to our winners and to all students who took part in the programme this year.

Henri Hufflett

Henri had an opportunity for ski Race Training camp in China in November (this is at the area for the 2022 China winter Olympics). It was a very successful trip to China with 11 days on snow and no lost days.

A very generous Japanese ski team and Australian FIS team allowed Henri to train with them every day so he was extremely fortunate to get such an opportunity.

Touch

Massive congratulations to our Senior A Touch Team placing 4th at Nationals.

Congratulations to Joey Scott being named in the tournament team.

All the boys played their hearts out, only losing to the top 3 teams. At the end of pool play we were 2nd in the pool which put us in the top 10 teams. These were split into 2 pools, we finished tied 2nd with Otago Boys and got through on try differential.

This put us into the semis, lost to Hamilton Boys, played Manakura College for 3rd/4th, narrowly losing that game.

Thanks to the coaching staff and supporters.

CONDOR 7’s

Nelson College has consistently competed in the senior level of the National Secondary School Condor Sevens, and this year for the first time, we were represented at the U15 level as well. This is a direct consequence of the commitment the College is making to their Rugby Academy Programmes.

For many years we have had a Senior Academy for Year 12 and 13 students. This year it comprised about 35 Year 12 and 13 students who were predominantly 1st and 2nd XV players. The Senior Condor team came out of this group and they won their way to the National tournament by dint of winning the Regional tournament.

A real investment has now also been undertaken in the Year 10 programme as 40 rugby players opted for the Junior Academy in 2018. The Academy ran a core curriculum subject for four hours per week throughout the year, based on the six pillars of rugby – technical, tactical, physical, nutrition, mental and holistic. The Academy is fronted by former Scottish, Hurricanes and Taranaki skills coach Jono Phillips, and Master in Charge of Rugby Peter Grigg. They have also had the expertise of All Black Kane Hames throughout most of the year.

These 40 students formed the basis of the school’s two U15 rugby teams, from which an “A” team was selected to represent Nelson College in the prestigious South Island 15-A-Side tournament hosted by Nelson College in 2018.

The Condor trip is the culmination of a series of tournaments and internal trials at Sevens level. In March, two teams travelled to Timaru to contest the South Island tournament. A try after the final hooter by Christchurch Boys High School deprived them of the title but the second placing was enough to ensure an invitation to Condors. Nelson College also won the Tasman Regional tournament and last week took out an invitation Round Robin held in Renwick. Tasman Mako Isaiah Miller is the coach of the Sevens team.

The Sevens team also looked to gain further experience as they made something of a road trip north. They took part in a small preparatory tournament in Rotorua with hosts Rotorua Boys High School and Western Heights College. This ensured they were battle-hardened for the Condor tournament in Auckland later that same week. Nelson College drew a tough pool that included hosts Scared Heart

College, alongside Otahuhu College and Rangitoto College. While Nelson fell at the first hurdle, two victories from three on Day One ensured Nelson a place in the 9-16 section on the second day. They finished with two more victories on Day Two and a win in the consolation bow final.

The long-term plan for the Nelson College Sevens programme is one of growth. It is hoped that in 2019, as well as continuing to an U15 team and Senior Team at Condor, we will also send an U16 team to Rarotonga to compete in a tournament late in the year. In 2020, a further expansion is planned by returning with an U17 group to an invitation tournament at Vajiravudh College in Thailand, at which the College last competed and and won in 2010. From

2020 on, the plan is to continue sending teams in each of the four grades to major Sevens tournaments every year.

Hopefully this is the beginning of a successful long-term Sevens programme at the College, both nationally and internationally.

TSS Junior Ki-O-Rahi Competition

On Tuesday 20th of November Nelson College attended the TSS Junior Ki-O-Rahi Competition at Waimea College. Nelson College entered 5 of the 7 teams in the boys division this year. The boys took out the top three placings.

Baseball report

Nelson College Yr 9/10 Baseball Team

Report Prepared by Head Coach – Marty Grant

Campaign – To Wellington to play Scots College, Naenae College and St Patricks Silverstream Date: November 20th -22nd 2018OverviewThis was the first baseball fixture for Nelson College and was initiated as part of the development of the game in the school with intentions of attending future national championships. We were also looking to develop new relationships with schools in the Wellington region as the game continue develop regionally and nationally. There is also a plan to make a trip to Japan in 2020 to further develop the school programme. The Nelson Heat Baseball Club has 20 players at U16 & u13 level that attend Nelson College and 2 National reps amongst their ranks. The trip was organised by Head Coach Marty Grant and Nelson College Sports Coordinator Alethea Stove, in collaboration with Wellington Baseball Associations Craig Wallace. The team was supported by Bruce Fleet (Assistant Coach) and Jennifer Duff-Mullett (Manager and Scorer)A trial was held on the 13th of November and 16 players attended. After initial selections and availability filters were established, 13 players were selected to represent Nelson College in this exchange. This included 3 year 8 students from Nelson Preparatory and a pick up from Waimea College.

Roster

Cooper Grant, Matt Lowe, Reegan Lawton, Jack Weaver, Ewan Mullett, James Fleet, Tuterangi Stone-Williams, Dylan Irvine, EJ Ifopo, Kelian Landry (Prep), Cosmo Price (Prep), Edward Henderson (Prep), Alex Ward (Waimea College)

After trouble with a van and an eventful start to the trip were managed to arrive in Wellington on a later ferry and were unable to play our schedule fixture on the Tuesday afternoon. This allowed us to acclimatise and proceed with a 2 hour training that afternoon. With the revised schedule were also able to visit the AK Powerplay baseball training centre the following morning for 2 hours. This allowed many of the new players the chance to improve on their new skills and the coaches were able to better measure the abilities and work ethic of the individuals and the team.

Page 25: Term 4 End of Year Newsletter 2018 - Nelson College · Callum Campbell, Health Education Prize - Fergus Hughes, History - Research Prize - Louis Macalister, History Prize - Matthew

A leadership group was established to help with the nurturing of a culture amongst that group that offered an open-door policy with communication and provide a supportive environment for members of the team and staff. In 3 groups led by Cooper Grant, Matt Lowe and Reegan Lawton we were able assign duties including food preparation, cleaning, responsibility for equipment, wakeup call and luggage. We were accommodated at the Naenae College School and this was new to several members of the group as we were required to follow tikanga and the protocols of staying on a marae.

We also were able to provide a fundraising raffle that would allow those that participated an $80 subsidy to the $200 cost of the trip.

These 3 things and the initial setback of the missing our ferry were a big part of what enabled this team to gel into a very close unit.

Game 1 Vs St Patricks Silver Stream – Wednesday 21st 1:30pm W-L (1-0)

We were capable winners of this game taking an 8-1 Lead into the 5th Inning. After the final frame Nelson College were 9-5 victors. Led by the starting pitcher catcher combination of Cooper Grant and Matt Lowe and the hitting of shortstop Ewan Mullett the team scored in every inning and showed maturity in their history making inaugural baseball game.

Winning Pitcher- Cooper Grant, Save - Matt Lowe Ewan Mullett (2-3 2B) Cooper Grant (2-3)

Game 2 Vs Naenae College Thursday 22nd 9:30am W-L (2-0)

Naenae College were had less experience than the Nelson College team and with some modifications to the rules and pitching distance we batted first and took a 4 -0 lead into the bottom of the 1st inning. Homeruns to Cooper Grant and Matt Lowe showed the power of the Nelson College line-up. The yr 8 pitcher Edward Henderson had his debut start for Nelson College and struck out the 1st two batters but struggled from there and was relieved by Tuterangi Stone-Williams who got the 3rd out. Not before Naenae had tied the scores at 4-4. The college batting machine then rolled collecting 5 more runs over the next 3 innings with hits from EJ Ifopo (x2) Grant(x2) and Stone Williams. Stone-Williams also shut down the Naenae College offence with 4 strikeouts and James Fleet struck out the last Naenae batter of the game to get the save.

Game 3 vs Scots College Thursday 12:00pm

Unfortunately, the rain returned, and we were unable to play. The team departed Wellington after learning a lot about teamwork, adversity, leadership, creating new relationships with the Wellington Baseball Association and the two schools that we played against and how much fun it is to represent your school in sport. As token of our gratitude for the exchange, I was able to present each school that we played with a “taonga” of a ball with the team signatures on them, mounted on a paua shell. (see photo)

The pride of these boys was no less evident when they performed the Nelson College haka prior to both games which led to a commanding and outstanding performance by all members of the group on and off the field.

There was an immense amount of caring and support from the team for EJ Ifopo when he became unwell on the ferry and the maturity shown and ability to work together in instances was a standout. The management team and coaching staff are grateful for the opportunity to support this team of young men” finding a place in this world”.

Sidney Barron

Nelson Symphony Orchestra Young Composers Competition

Earlier this year, we congratulated Year 12 student, Sidney Barron, for his success in placing joint first in a composition competition run annually by the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra. Achievements like this are no easy feat, as scoring original and imaginative work for the instrumentation of a full Symphonic Orchestra is a rather hefty undertaking. It was therefore marvellous to discover that this prowess reaped further successes, when he was selected as worthy recipient of the inaugural Nelson Symphony Orchestra’s Secondary School Composer’s Competition. This award came with the accolade of a live performance of his piece at the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts (NCMA) on Saturday the 24th November and a rather welcome prize-money reward.

“Having an orchestra perform your piece is something that very rarely gets to happen for a young composer. So, it was exciting” Sidney

It is exciting that our local orchestra have adopted this new competition to foster and encourage young musicians, as lots of composers seldom get the opportunity to bring their ideas to life in an expert live performance such as this. Despite only being the maiden voyage of this event, there were encouraging numbers of entries encompassing a range of styles which provided much hot discussion for the panel of judges. Sidney’s winning composition showed a sophistication of string writing that tipped their final decision; a result that was agreed on unanimously. His piece entitled “Yangjiang Overture”, was written in response to a recent cultural exchange to Nelson’s sister city in China, Yangjiang. Sidney incorporates musical motifs inspired the culture and nature of both countries and the work closes with a joyful ending that celebrates the collaboration of both cultures. What a captivating evening it was to hear this in its full glory packed to a full house audience. Bravo Sidney!

Careers December Newsletter - Careers

On November 1st we farewelled our Year 13 students at the Senior Prize giving. At this time of the year I look at the statistics around where boys are heading and I thought this would be valuable to share with the Nelson College community. It never ceases to amaze me that we have similar results each year but the variety of different courses and training opportunities is getting broader every year. It is always difficult to track actual destinations but these numbers below are based on the information I have to date.

University Scholarships

There is a great deal of talent at Nelson College and it has been heartening to see so many of our students receive substantial university scholarships. The total value of these scholarships is over $200,000. These are not easy to obtain and require academic results at a high excellence level as well as involvement in the school community, leadership, cultural and sporting activities. The recipients this year were:-

Otago University Leaders of Tomorrow, Liam Domett-Potts, Zac Waterman-Thomas Victoria Tangiwai Scholarship for Excellence, Noah Levy University of Otago Performance Entrance Scholarship, Daniel Taylor University of Otago Academic Excellence Entrance Scholarship, Rohan Trill Trustpower Youth Community Spirit, Robbie Anderson Otago University Leaders of Tomorrow, Josh Cowles, Samuel Gastrell University of Otago Academic Excellence Entrance Scholarship, Max Meffan, Thomas Peterson University of Canterbury Science Scholarship, Alec Fox, Sam Court University of Canterbury Emerging Leader/University of Canterbury Engineering High Achievers Award, Thomas Peterson Victoria Tangiwai Scholarship for Excellence, Latai Rasmussen University of Otago Performance Entrance Scholarship, Matai McGuinniety Victoria Tangiwai Scholarship for Excellence, Harris Devon University of Otago Performance Entrance Scholarship, Albie Murray

Year 9 Careers

Over the last week of term, alongside Respect 360 we ran a two hour Careers presentation. The focus was on “self-awareness”, the first step in the Career Decision Making Process. The students completed a simple Myers Briggs personality test and identified with a particular animal. Students then recorded information into their One Note E Portfolios. They selected attributes, strengths and skills they felt was a reflection of them. It is a fun exercise and you are welcome to try this at home by going onto the following website - https://icould.com/buzz-embed/.

We also looked at what skills employers are looking for, the future of work and did a scavenger hunt around Career NZ to better get to know this website. This is a valuable tool and has lots of information about different jobs, what type of people are sorted to this work, how to get into this type of work and current job opportunities https://www.careers.govt.nz/.

Looking at 2019

Having time, while studying for my Bachelor in Career Development, has meant that I have been able to reflect on our needs within the school and these are some of the areas we plan to further develop going into 2019.

• Parent engagement – running workshops as “Parents as Career Educators”. As a parent you have the most influence on your child’s career decision so I want to work with parents to make sure we are on the same page and that you are kept up to date with latest tertiary training opportunities and requirements.

• Careers focused website – it is really difficult for us to get all the information we need to out to students and their families and we are reluctant to bombard you with emails. In February, 2019 we will launch our own Nelson College Careers webpage that will be linked to the schools webpage. This will house all notices, advertise current job vacancies and contain relevant, up to date information about careers.

• Better access to career education – I will be working alongside curriculum leaders and teachers and developing resources for delivery into classes where relevant. I will also be delivering more careers programmes within classes so we reach more of our students.

As always I am available to meet with both parents and boys on an individual basis by appointment.
