It is a chance to celebrate the successes of our great school and the impact this additional funding has had. At Wyrallah Road Public School, this funding has supported the implementation of numerous programs including L3 (Language, Learning and Literacy), Targeting Early Numeracy and Stronger Smarter. It has also seen the employment of school learning support officers and assisted in the professional development of teachers and support staff across the whole school. To ensure this funding continues and WRPS kids can continue to benefit, all families are asked to stay informed and speak with politicians about the very real difference it is making in our kids’ lives. The theme is “Slip, Slop, Slap & Slide” and will be a Mufti Day where children can wear sensible casual clothes with covered shoes. A sausage sizzle will be held at lunch time at a cost of $2 each. Order forms were sent home yesterday. Please complete and return order forms to the canteen by tomorrow, Thursday, to allow for catering. Money should be brought to school on the day. This promises to be a fun day for a worthwhile cause providing much needed shade for our students. Your support is much appreciated. NORTH COAST NATIONAL EXCURSION On Thursday, Kindergarten children and the Stage 2 Dance Group travelled to the North Coast National to see the sights and experience a day at the show. The children were very excited as we left the school. The Stage 2 dancers performed brilliantly in front of a large crowd, including our Kindergarten children. The children walked around with their classes looking and interacting with the various exhibits and displays. The children enjoyed the livestock and farm displays and the petting zoo. The Ashton Circus was in town and the children enjoyed their hilarious performance. After a long day and lots of walking, the children left with many goodies and great memories. We were so proud of all the Kindergarten children and the Stage 2 Dance Group for their exemplary behaviour throughout the day.

FRIENDS OF THE KOALA EXCURSION – 2H

Last week, Year 1 and Year 2 went on an excursion to visit the Friends of the Koala. We walked all the way to Southern Cross University to visit the volunteers who look after the sick and injured koalas. The volunteers, Mark, Lola, Bev and Blake shared a lot of interesting information about the koalas and the diseases threatening them. We learnt about the different treatment for conjunctivitis and ‘wet bottom’ and how the volunteers look after them. We got to see Edward, Sweetie and Slash - three koalas who were being nursed back to health. While we were at SCU, we also met some volunteers from Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Services (WIRES). These volunteers look after and rescue native Australian

animals. They told us some interesting stories about their animal rescues, including one about Lucky, a joey who found out the hard way he needs some more swimming lessons! Before we left to return to school, we were given some information to pass on. So if you see any sick or injured koalas, please call Koala Rescue on 6622 1233 or WIRES on 6628 1898 if you see other sick or injured native animals. Both these numbers take calls 24 hours, 7 days a week. From all reports, all the boys and girls had a fantastic time! We would like to thank the volunteers for giving up their time and sharing all the valuable information with us. Thank you!

READING RECOVERY Wyrallah Road Public School provides support for students in many ways. Reading Recovery is an international program offered at WRPS, designed to assist students in their second year at school (Year 1 in NSW). Reading Recovery lessons are delivered through one-to-one instruction for 30 minutes each day, for six students. Each program usually runs for 12-20 weeks. The 30 minute lesson is individually designed to meet the student’s literacy learning needs. Successful implementation of Reading Recovery is dependent upon parental support. Parents/carers must make a commitment to support their child throughout their inclusion on the program. Home tasks provide reinforcement of each day’s reading and writing and need only take about 10 minutes.

ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE OR DIALECT (EAL/D) Wyrallah Road Public School supports students who speak English as a second language. Learning English is essential for success at school and for further education, training and employment for students who speak a language other than English as their first language. English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) Student Support aims to develop EAL/D students' English language competence and improve their learning outcomes throughout the curriculum to a level where they can fully participate in schooling and independently pursue further education and training.
