Term 4 Week 4B 31 October 2014 DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT (Rel) Student Safety To and From School Over the past week we have had a number of reports regarding student safety during their travel to and from school. Fortunately, none of the incidents reported resulted in accident or injury, but it is a timely reminder for students to remain vigilant and responsible during their travel. In the period around school start and finish times there are a large number of bus, car and pedestrian movements in the immediate vicinity of the school. Students need to remain watchful and not assume that all drivers follow the road rules and always watch for traffic, even if they have right of way at a green pedestrian light or crossing. Cyber Safety and Facebook The Police School Liaison Officer, from the Local Command, has contacted the school with information regarding a Facebook scam involving a person approaching girls for personal information and photographs. The person is masquerading as Sarah Bell from an Eastern Suburbs bikini company and requesting girls send photos of themselves in bikinis. The claim is entirely false and the company informed police that it has no one by that name affiliated with them. It is important that all students only communicate with, and share appropriate photos with people they know well and not be drawn into scams like these. Please make sure that your children are made aware of this and are particularly cautious of people approaching them online. HSC Exams Whilst the HSC exams continue into next week, many students at Cherrybrook Technology High School have finished their final exam and are looking forward to a well-earned break. Students will need to ensure that all the issued textbooks and resources are returned to the correct faculty in the manner arranged. This is required as part of the sign-out process. We look forward to seeing all of Year 12 again at the end-of-year BBQ to share their joys, achievements and aspirations for the future. Year 11 High Achievers’ Morning Tea Wednesday recess of this week provided an opportunity to congratulate 24 Year 11 High Achieving students for their excellent results in a range of Preliminary HSC courses. Each student received an outstanding report following the recent AP2 examinations. Students enjoyed a fine morning tea and discussed their results and hopes leading into the HSC and beyond, with the School Executive, their Stage Head Teacher and their Year Advisers. These students exemplify the hard work that many Cherrybrook Technology High School students put into their studies. Congratulations to Christopher Armstrong, Gilbert Choi, Sarah Collins, Eliseus Feng, Stasia Hendrawan, Stella Hendrawan, Alyssa Hutchings, Syam Iyer, Madeline Johnson, Marcus Lee, Katie Lim, Darren Lim, Michele Lim, Annie Ma, Bhavik Magan, Vidhi Nanda, Hassan Naveed, Chirag Rao Sahib, Merle Runde, Pragya Singhal, Stanton Tam, Lakni Weerasinghe, Kevin Xi and Yuqi Zhu. Young Business Mind Awards The Dural Chamber of Commerce hosted its inaugural Awards night on Wednesday. Three Students from our school were nominated, Jeremiah Sas (Year 12), Ali Mithwani (Year 10) and Aaron Takiza (Year 10). Nine schools from the local area also submitted nominations. All boys were highly commended on their ideas and the entrepreneurial skills they have developed. Jeremiah was chosen to be a finalist on the night but unfortunately didn’t win the major award. Big thanks go to our String Ensemble who provided incidental music for the occasion. Mrs Bevan 2014 Global Dignity Day On Friday 24 October, Ellen Cameron and I, accompanied by Mrs Cross, represented CTHS at Global Dignity Day, held at Parliament House in Sydney. This day recognises that everyone, no matter their culture, religion, generation, gender or socioeconomic class, should be recognised as a human with emotions and dignity. Schools from all around Sydney attended the event, where Rob McCallum, 2011 Senior Australian of the Year, was the guest speaker for the day. He spoke of the work he had been doing for the UN Committee on the Rights with Disabilities and how he has been aiding people around the world to reach equality. We were then split into groups of sixteen and attempted to define the different levels of dignity and expressed our personal experiences where we received and lost dignity. Some of the school kids told stories of social and racial bullying, while another told of their relative’s rare disability. Once we reconvened, the best stories from all the groups were selected to be shared. A particularly striking story came from a member of Kids Off The Streets who, after falling pregnant at the age of 15, lost all of her dignity and was left to become homeless. Finally, we left Parliament House after ‘stealing’ a couple of sandwiches and resting at a coffee shop, before it was time to catch the train back to Pennant Hills. All three of us learned greatly from Global Dignity Day and we were privileged to have been given the opportunity to attend. Thanks to Ms Adamou for organising our attendance to this worthwhile event. Dominic Serov, Year 10

Sculpture by the Sea Excursion 2014 On Monday 27 October, Year 9, 10 and 11 Visual Arts students travelled to Bondi Beach to be inspired by the annual Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. After an excited 90 minute bus ride we were dropped at Bondi, ready to see our first sculpture. The coastal walk to Tamarama was amazing and we gained tons of inspiration for our next artwork. In particular, we were drawn to the giant oversized fry pan embedded in the sand at Tamarama beach as it welcomed people to lie out and sun ‘bake’. The coloured bottle caps melting off the side of rocks showed how art can be made of anything, even items considered as rubbish. Overall, it was a great day to enjoy the sculptures and the scenery. CREATIVELY AWESOME Congratulations to Ryan Ashtari, Year 10, and Amelia Smillie, Year 9, who performed at the State Drama Festival at the Seymour Centre last Friday. There were 70 drama students from CTHS in the audience to cheer them on. Amelia has been performing in the NSW Public Schools State Drama Festival since she was in Year 6 and this year’s work entitled Mirror, Mirror was no exception to the ongoing standard of excellence that the Art’s Unit ensembles are able to produce. Ryan performed in a work entitled Orpheus and Eurydice based upon the Greek myth of love and loss. Judging by the smiles on our students’ faces, this event was a rich and enjoyable experience for all of our aspiring performers. To the dedicated parents who have supported their children in their creative endeavours, a heartfelt thank you goes out to you from the drama staff at CTHS. Drama Retrospective Evening On Wednesday night, the Year 11 drama students presented high quality and entertaining drama performances to entertain a small group of staff, friends and family. They have been studying a variety of different dramatic conventions and performance styles. The Year 11 drama preliminary course helps students to build their acting and devising skills, in readiness for the HSC group performance assessment. The evening included a range of pieces from structured to improvisational and were well received and appreciated by the audience. Thanks to all the performers, Courtney Larkham, Molly Alphonso, Nicholas Stubbins, Zoe Geleris, Dominique Prasad, Cassandra Barberis-Leon, James Denyer, Tiffany Dell, Cooper Vanderveer-Visser and Gerogia Hilton. It was most pleasing to see these stand-out performances from the small group of clearly dedicated students. Thank you to Ms Cannon and Mr Jones for their work putting it together. Special thanks also to Vaibhavi Lalwani and Ryan Ashtari for their help with the event. Ms Cannon

How can you be Hungary next to Turkey and Greece? Last Thursday, 23 October, twelve students from 8T embarked on a trip to St Marys in order to participate in a Geography Trivia Competition. We split into two groups, both consisting of three girls and three boys in order to increase the diversity of knowledge between the teams. When we arrived at the hall where the competition took place everyone was feeling quite zealous. The teacher gave us some true and false questions which we engaged in excitedly and, though we couldn’t win any of the prizes (iTunes gift cards), we learned some very interesting information. The rounds continued the true or false games. It started from round 1 to round 10, the difficulty gradually increasing. The questions were all based on geography, for example there would be questions about extinct species or tools used in geography and relating to countries’ proximity in the world etc. As time passed and more rounds appeared, we became more confident answering the questions as we distributed the parts we each exceeded in and successfully solved the questions. In the end, team Cherrybrook Green was able to win third place and proudly come back to school. We greatly thank Miss Kerr who sacrificed her time at school in order to accompany us in our trip and are we are truly grateful for being able to have this opportunity. Alice Yang, Year 8

Food Technology Students in Year 8 have been studying the design process and creating their perfect restaurant for Cherrybrook Shopping Village.
