It is a set of technical specification which defines the parameters an electricity generating plant and grid system network have to meet to ensure proper functioning of the electrical grid. The Grid Code is a set of technical regulations used by utility companies such as Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in the Peninsular Malaysia that serves as the main guidelines in electricity supply operation; to ensure the electricity supply in Peninsular Malaysia remains reliable. The planning, design, and operation of a power system requires engineering studies to evaluate performance of existing or proposed system, reliability, safety, and economics. Studies, properly thought off, structured and conducted, are cost-effective way to prevent the unexpected and to optimize equipment selection. In the design stage, the studies specify equipment and ratings to avoid potential deficiencies in the system before it goes into operation. In existing systems, the studies help identify the cause of failure and mal-operation, and determine corrective measures for improving system performance. The need to carry out system studies is also in line with the requirement of the Grid Code. Realising the importance of the minimum requirement for studies on planning, design and operation of high voltage power systems, and the associated enablers for good practice of grid management, the Department of Standards Malaysia has published various series of Malaysian Standard (MS) on power system planning and management. These MS are fundamental in initiatives towards developing smart grid applications. The MS referred in this seminar are developed by the Working Group on Power System Planning, Operation and Studies (WG/E/7-6) and the Working Group on Power Systems Management and Associated Information Exchange (WG/E/7-4). The Malaysian Grid Code (Grid Code), published by the Energy Commission Malaysia, is a regulatory instrument much needed to coordinate various electricity supply activities.
