Simile• Comparison between two dissimilar
things that share a common characteristic, using the word like or as.

Girls getting pregnant and dropping out of school= seeds from a bun
Topic sentence
• Introduces the main idea of the paragraph
• Should be specific.
• Think how symbols have more than two meanings.
Colorful clothes
• The colorful clothes that Taylor wears represent her bright personality and her desire to be different from the other girls at her school.
Tire
• The tire represents both Taylor’s fear of what could go wrong, as well as her desire to escape Pitman County.
Homework
• Choose five symbols, similes or metaphors and write 5 strong topic sentences for a paragraph. Typed or written neatly in pen. (10 points)
Irony
• The opposite of what one expects– Verbal irony: speaker says the opposite of
what he means.– Situational: the situation is ironic.– Dramatic irony: audience knows something
the character doesn’t.
