When I was a small boy we lived in a semi-detached house with the usual two
storeys and a garden back and forth.
Most of my recollections are happy ones and I think of that time as the good old
days. There was, however, one fly in the ointment: the couple next door had twin boys
who were three years older than me. The twins' favorite pastime, it seemed to me, was to
play tricks on and set traps for their younger neighbor- in other words, me. I tried very
hard to take no notice of them and in general succeeded until the day they tried to kidnap
my dog. I was an only child and my dog was my constant playmate. When I looked out of
the window and saw those two boys climb over the fence and catch little Brandy by the
collar as he was digging under the apple tree, I lost my temper completely. I dashed out
into the garden, shouting furiously, shaking my fists. They were so surprised that they
dropped Brandy and disappeared back over the fence.
You can imagine my relief the day I saw a removal van outside their house...
