Test (2) The Odyssey: The Sirens

When I had concluded my story, Circe sat up."And now, Odysseus," she said, "pay attention towhat I am about to tell you. Indeed, later you willrecall it and be glad of your recollection. First, you will come to the Sirens, whoenchant all who come near them. If any manunwarily draws in too close and hears the singingof the Sirens, he will never see his family or homeagain, for the reason I will explain. The Sirens sitin a green field and warble him to death with thesweetness of their song. They bewitch all menwith their singing. Whoever listens to the singingwill not see his wife or his children any more, forthe Sirens will enchant him. They will draw themen to them where they sit and that is why there isa great heap of dead men's bones lying all aroundthem, with the flesh still rotting off them. Therefore, pass these Sirens by, and fill yourmen's ears with wax so that none of them mayhear the singing; but if you, Odysseus, would

like to listen to the song yourself, you must tell yourmen to bind you as you stand upright on a cross-piecehalfway up the mast. Your men must lash the ropes to the mast itself,so that you may have the pleasure of listening. Youmust tell your men that if you beg and pray them tountie you, they must bind you tighter so that you areheld fast."
