Curricular Reasoning

Circular reasoningM=Zora Neale Hurston celebrates her race by not feeling bad about being black.

E=She states, “I am not tragically colored.”

L=This shows that she is proud to be black because she isn’t tragically colored.

Vague/Obvious connections..

RUBBERBAND

M= Zora Neale Hurston resists stereotypes by not allowing herself to fall into the negative outlook that many black people have had.

E=She states, “I do not belong to that sobbing school of Negrohood.”

L= She does not belong to that group of people who feel bad and get brought down. Some people can bring you down and others lift you up. You have to be with people who are good for you. Sometimes things are hard, but you have to just think about good stuff.

Too Vague

Zora Neale Hurston resists stereotypes by not allowing herself to fall into the negative outlook that many black people have(had). She states, “I do not belong to that sobbing school of Negrohood.” It is hard to be feel negative and stereotyped about things that seem to hold you back. Stereotypes can be wrong and should be resisted.

Too Narrow…

M=Zora Neale Hurston celebrates her race by dancing on her front porch. E=She says, “It was a gallery seat for me.”

L=She would dance on her porch and celebrate her race. People would see her dance and that is important because they were coming in from Florida and Zora would dance because she was not ashamed by who she is.

Only Summarizing Evidence

Paine’s characterization of America does not hold true today because black people are still at a disadvantage. According to chart B, only 5% of black Americans have a post-secondary degree and make over $50,000 a year while 12% of white Americans have a post-secondary degree and make over $50,000. Black people are not going to school and are not getting jobs that make them money. White people are getting their schooling and eventually making money.

Ignoring Evidence

Frederick Douglass tells slaves that they should not celebrate the 4th of July. He states that compared to the United States no nation is “more shocking and bloody.” Black people celebrate a day when they are still slaves even though the day is about freedom and against unfair treatment. They should consider why white people like the fourth of July and realize that they are hypocrites.

Ignoring Evidence

Paine’s characterization of America does not hold true today because black people are still at a disadvantage. According to chart B, only 5% of black Americans have a post-secondary degree and make over $50,000 a year while 12% of white Americans have a post-secondary degree and make over $50,000. Black people are treated unfairly by people because most people, black or white, are racist. People may not even know that they are discriminating against people, but it happens. Paine’s beliefs that despite America’s differences, we are all equal is wrong. Differences always mean that some people will be seen as “better” than others.
