Still have never gotten a posi- tive Libyan ID here. (Eckman) Last year they were signing off at 0100 and that would be a good time to try-CH CHINA Nanchang pounding in on 10/11 from 1137 to 1141. Equal to volume of CC on 1040. (Wilkinson) CHINA/SOUTH KOREA CC speaker here and HLKY battling each other on 10/11 from 1141-1145. (Wilkinson) GILBERT ISLANDS VSZl Tarawa was best ever on 10117 from 0933- 0942 with good Polynesian mx. (Wilkinson) PERU OAX4 Lima must be AN. Heard 0928-0933 on 10/17 at ST-S8 level. (Wilkinson) SOUTH KOREA/JAPAN/3rd ASIAN HLKB, JOHK, and CC speaker all taking turns 1253-1256 and later on 10116. Unable to separate any of these on the loop. (Wilkinson) BARBADOS CBC excellent w/local sports 0000 10/1 on a very auroral evening. (Eckman) ECUADOil R. Ifesa almost equal to HRYW 944 10-26 at various checks. ASIAN UNID oriental here 1208 to 1216 on 10116. M&F speaking al- ternately in what sounded like CC. Perhaps a new Indonesian here? Would like some helv on this one. (Wilkinson) MOROCCO 10/18 at 23b0, FF male anncr wjeight'minutes of nx. Rabat mentioned twice. Rock mx format, no IS, and no anthem at 0100 s/off. They just pull the switch. GPN direction finding helpful. 68 dB olnoise, not 11 the 3 Moroccan nets. (Bailey) This one drove me crazy. There are very, very few anncts between records. nothing at s/off, etc. Features hard core rock mx a la Joplin. Unbelievably strong most night-close to if not the best TA here. Matters further complicated by it not being // to anything else. so tnx for the ID-CH P.S. Between reports in IDXG and European bulletins, 593, 611, 701, 773 (supposedly on now). 935. and 1043 have all jumped freq. Have had a weak carrier on 864 so maybe 863 is also on the new plan-CH ENGLAND Crowborough strong w/OM in EE 0316 1019. Very good 0520 w/GG pgm. (Eckman) COLOMBIA La Voz de Monteria noted recently on the newest of its many freqs, quite strong. (Hutton) ITALY (tentative) believed to be the one w/TT 0434-0438 1019 w/ surprisingly strong sig. App. s/on at 0500 as I noted YL in what seemed to be I1 at 0505. No positive ID though. (Eckman) HAITI (assumed) first noticed weakly at 0212 10/26 but not enuf for any sort of ID. (Hutton) ALBANIA Tirana good on peaks 0245 10115 w/AA speech. (Coughlin) UNIDS one on 1224, the other on 1224.4. Per the Europeans (who somehow here splits better than we do) these are R. Nueva Vic- toria in CR and R. El Mundo in Ecuador. (Hutton) UNID and interesting. Very weak w/occasional audio assorted nights this season. Arctic Radio Club lists 0s. Carchenses in Ecuador here. (Hutton) HONDURAS caught 2 "R. Constelacion" ID's 10119 eve, forgot the time. Schatz says this is HCRG, 10 kw in Tegucigalpa and nominally 1340.; however WRTH has listed a 1 kw in Tegucigalpa on 1350 for years. (Hutton) .. USSR Vladivostok in on rare occasion at 0936-0942 on 10110. Good - .- music and male vocalist ~/male anncr in RR. Not as strong as 584 and 665. (Wilkinson) HAWAII Honolulu was still on 1380 1013 at 0900, when I heard em for the first time ever. KRKO off, KGMS nulled, QRM from WPHM and WMEE. Poor. (Hardy) ALBANIA Tirana noted fading in at 2205 10/15 w/EE pgm. ss pgm at. 2300 vv strong on 10/15. (Eckman) -. ~

UNID carrier noted at 0434 1019. ~e"era1 possibilities per WRTH. (Eckman) R. Mi Amigo most likely-CH ECUADOR (tentative) stumbled 1nto.a poor to fair signal 10/26 at 0245. Produced audio except when it faded way down. Unable to catch an ID; the Europeans are reporting HCBXl R. Cultura de la Casa Ecuatoriana here. (Hutton) ALBANIA Durres assumed w/strong carrier; weak audio W/YL 0405 1018. Noted again 0355 1019 very strong. (Eckmany MONACO Monte Carlo TWR fading in around 2206 10/14 w/rlg pgm. Potent 0425 1018 w/OC-TT. (Eckman) UNIDS three distinct carriers here 10126 eve-1474.9, 1475, and 1475.5. Low and high both produced audio with 1474.9 definitely in SS. (Hutton)

1475 UNID possiblty two stns noted here on several eves at around 0400 and also at SS occasionally. Have yet to ID Vienna here so far this season so one of them could be it. Spain and perhaps Benin could also be possibilities. Best on 1018. 1019, and 10115. (Eckman) Should have been more specific above, the stns I "heard" were LA'S-CH

1484 UNID stn here w/TT off-on 0425 1018. Surprisingly strong 0517 1019 w/TT. Anyone else hear this one? (Eckman) Sorry, no help.

1493 UNID stn w/OC quite weak 0426 1018. No chance of an ID at this time. (Eckman)

1502 POLAND Narsaw excellent w/piano IS 0500 1019 well atop the chan- nel, SAH's presumably from the Spaniards. (Eckman)

SPECIAL METHODS THAT CAN INCREASE POSSIBILITY OF LONG DISTANCE DX TEST RECEPTION

Frank Dailey

1. IF MUSIC IS PLAYED: Use distinctive music - marches & polkas stand out. Few stations play them and there is usually high modulation in them. Over the years DXers have been accustomed to use of them as DX test material.

2. TEST TONES: Use stepped tones as opposed to sweep tones. Try to stay within a limit of 500 Hz to 3 kHz in audio frequency as many communications receivers are designed to clip the highs and lows. An excellent example could be:

15 seconds .... .... ... 800 cycle tone 15 seconds .......... 1500 cycle tone 15 seconds .......... 3000 cycle tone 15 seconds...........full station identification 1 minute

3. USE OF PHONETICS: Many calls sound similar especially when the simal is weak or there is anoiher more powerful statibn on the frequency.- "B" "C" "D" "G" and "T" can easily be mistaken, but Bravo/Charlie/~elta/~olf/~ango won't be. Several phonetic ID's can help. "This is KGBT - King, Golf, Bravo, Tango conducting a test."

4. MORSE CODE ID'S: While use of pure CW, A-1, Morse code by actually keying the transmitter is not permitted on standard broadcast stations, it is possible to record several Morse Code ID's on a "cart" or cassette and play that over the air. Several stations do just that for their regular frequency checks . with monitoring companies. This "Morse Code" enables DXers to drastically reduce receiver !andwidth, cut interference, and possibly hear the DX statihn in "Code when voice can't make it.

THE BEST METHOD OF INSURING THAT A DX TEST WILL BE HEARD IS TO CONDUCT IT AT A TIME WHEN THE FREQUENCY WILL BE AS CLEAR (OR FREE OF INTERFERENCE) AS IS POSSIBLE.

OFTEN THIS MEANS CONDUCTING A TEST LATE IGHT/EARLY MONDAY MORNING WHEN MANY HIGH POWERED CLEAR CHANNEL CLAab I H I ~ U CLASS I1 STATIONS SIGN OFF.

MICHAEL COOGEIZN - 17 Bell is Circle - Cambridge, MA - 021.40 The short a r t i c l e reprinted i n the Oct. 10 DX NWS "%adcasting not Re-

s t r i c ted t o 5kHzn deserves t o be much longer. My o l d Blaupmkt Rremen automobile radio has good audio resmnse. and it i s a t r e a t t o hear how much g o d aldio i s broadcast i n AM. 1 called the CE of the highest f i d e l i t y AM s ta t ion i n my m a . WCAS-740, & he told me the Limit on the highest frequency they bruadcast was s e t by the t e l e p h n e l i n e between studio and XR, which was supp~sed to be 15k o r w . Most AM s ta t ions routinely broadcast mx to a t l e a s t 7k. However. t h e m is a mason why AM receivers have such p m r alldio reswnse - the 10k whist le from the s ta t ion on the next channel. During the day my Blaupunkt sounds wonderful, but around one hour before SSS I s t a r t t o hear t h i s s h r i l l whistle. even on strong loca l s tat ions. There i s a tone sui tch t o eliminate i t , but I have a loldspeaker with a tweeter cone, so I can s t i l l hear tha t annoying whistle. Easiest way f o r a radio designer to eliminate t h i s problem i s t o design l o w f i d e l i t y detectors and amplifiers i n h i s AM radios. The r igh t way i s to include a 13k notch f i l t e r i n t h e c i r c u i t , a s McKay/Dgmek does. On an SW broaicast RX w s would jiant t o have a 5k f i l t e r . while s t a n l a d e: LF broadcast RXes f o r use i n 3urope xould need a 9k f i l t e r . As DXers we have to be aware tha t high aul io frequencies a r e being broadcast and no amount of f i l t e r i n g will remvu t h i s sidebard splash when we a re t rying t o hear s p l i t chmnels, o r DX r igh t next t o l o c a l s ta t ions. Only careful use of the n u l l of your loop antenna w i l l help. We can be gra te fu l when s ta t ions a re broadcasting t e le - t a lk shows, since they take u; much l e s s space on the d i a l & l e t DX s t a t ions get through on adjacent charnels.
