Celebration Launch Party for DBB Solicitors

It was party time in Stockbridge as newly merged legal firm DBB solicitors

celebrated its launch.Guests gathered in the superb orangery at the Three Cups Inn after plans to hold the event in the gardens of the Clarendon Court offices were switched due to the bad weather. Guest of honour was Romsey MP Caroline Nokes and the party was also an opportunity for DBB solicitors to pursue its passion for the community by inviting two charities to use the event to raise their profile and increase awareness of the work they do.

One of DBB solicitors’ aims is to increasingly build its reputation as a progressive and caring law firm with a proactive approach to working with all aspects of the community.

The Three Smiles fun club is based at Andover Leisure Centre and is a multi-activity programme for young people aged 0-19 years with additional needs. They can take part in weekly activities alongside siblings every Sunday afternoon during term times. Activities include trampolining, soft play circuits, junior boxing, arts and crafts, badminton and archery.BUGS, the Salisbury-based Burns Unit Group Support, told guests how burn patients can suffer years of pain and suffering,

operations and many mental and physical difficulties.

Families too can suffer long term difficulties. Post hospital support for survivors of burns is very sparse in the UK and in this region the support offered by BUGS is the only befriending support of its kind available to people who have been burned.DBB solicitors have offices in Stockbridge and Andover, where a second celebration was planned.

Much Ado about Nothing

Shakespeare, eh? Mention that to most people and they’ll have vague

memories of dusty classrooms, boredom and doesn’t everyone die? Skulls, swords, Scandinavian psychosis – it’s just a laugh a minute.

Well, those are the tragedies, and while the Bard is responsible for some of the most thought-provoking literature in the English language, he did have a sense of humour, you know. That’s why we know his more light-hearted work as Shakespearean comedies. Now don’t expect Sid James or Peter Kay to turn up on stage at the Stockbridge Amateur Dramatic Society’s summer production of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ in the Burrow in Longstock between the 5th and 7th of July, but do be prepared for an evening of conviviality and laughter.

The play is about two pairs of lovers who…well let’s just say the course of true love doesn’t run smoothly, aided and abetted by a villain and a spectacularly incompetent policeman. Director Barry Webb has set the play in the 1920s, a milieu that will suit the fast moving plot changes and wit of the original Elizabethan text. You really need to see it for yourselves, which is why this pre-viewer recommends an umbrella (for the notoriously

pernicious weather), a glass or two of wine and some nibbles. Oh, and you’ll need to bring a chair.

Most of all though, leave your school-days perception of Shakespeare at home, and just enjoy the evening. On the evidence of previous performances by this dedicated drama group, you will not be disappointed.

ErratumWe pride ourselves on accuracy at Test Valley Forum, but occasionally errors can creep in. We'd like to correct an announcement we made in the last issue about the Stockbridge Amateur Dramatic Society's summer production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing.

The CORRECT DATES are: Thursday 5th to Saturday 7th July, in the garden at The Burrow, Longstock. Tickets are available at John Robinson Butchers and the Garden Inn in Stockbridge; the Post Office in Kings Somborne and on-line at www.stockbridgeamdrams.org.uk.

We'd like to apologise for any embarrassment, especially to the cast, who are still madly learning their lines!

To have one new business is something to celebrate. To have

two is doubly great, but to have three new businesses, all working with fabric and all from the same place, must be unique? But this is exactly what has happened at The Fairground Craft & Design Centre in Weyhill where Hailey-Louise, Jen and Maggie have all started new businesses dealing with different aspects of textiles over the last 6 months. The other thing the businesses share is that they have all been helped by Test Valley Borough Council's Business Incentive Grant. With its collection of craftsmen and women on the historical site immortalised by Thomas Hardy in The Mayor of Casterbridge, the Fairground Craft and Design Centre in Weyhill is now one of Test Valley's favourite visitor attractions and has proved an excellent base for setting up the businesses. Hailey-Louise Budding is a textile designer who offers one-to-one and group workshops in textile design, free machine embroidery,

Councillors Lashbrook and Charnley, in whose Ward the Fairground sits, presented the grant cheques which are just one of the ways the Council gives practical help to new and small businesses. Both Councillors were delighted to have such a hive of enterprise in their area and pleased that the Council's Business

Incentive Grant has helped the three new enterprises in the early stages of their development. To check if your new business is eligible for a grant please contact David Gleave, Economic Development Officer at Test Valley Borough Council on 01264 368309

New quality scheme for accommodation providers being considered

An entry level quality assessment scheme for B&Bs in the Borough is

being considered by Test Valley Borough Council.

Accommodation providers from across Test Valley heard about the new entry level assessment scheme at a meeting organised by the Council. The meeting provided the first opportunity for local B&Bs, hotels and self catering establishments to hear about the scheme which is being adopted in many other areas of the country, including parts of Hampshire.

Pam Foden, from national tourism body VisitEngland said “This scheme is a popular option for businesses who may not necessarily want an official VisitEngland star rating, but do want to provide customers with the reassurance that comes with an assessment scheme accredited by the national tourist board. The Test Valley local accommodation assessment scheme would

consist of an annual day visit from an experienced assessor to check that the business meets all the regulatory requirements – is clean, safe and true to its marketing”.

Councillor Peter Giddings, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development at Test Valley Borough Council said “Currently about half of Test Valley’s accommodation providers belong to the AA and Quality in Tourism star rating scheme. That means a large number of businesses cannot be promoted via our Tourist Information Centre and Tourism South East. The Council is very therefore very keen to adopt this new entry level scheme which will help support local businesses whilst assisting in our aim of ensuring a competitive local economy”

For further information, please contact David Gleave, Economic Development Officer at Test Valley Borough Council on 01264 368309.

Carisma Vehicle Solutions is fronted by Sean Canham and

Andrew Scarborough who have both been in the motor

industry for around 18 years, after meeting whilst joining a

Vauxhall franchise on the same day in May 1994.

Based at the Old Coachworks in Over Wallop, near Stockbridge, Carisma

has been helping customers with their vehicle needs since 2003 and their

commitment and service to customers has seen sales increase year upon

year. They have already supplied hundreds of cars and vans to both private

and business clients.

Carisma are able to offer vehicle deals for private individuals and business

users; they specialise in finding the car or van you want by utilising their

many trade links which saves you time and expense when purchasing

your new vehicle. Having excellent relationships with both car dealers

and manufacturers ensures that in conjunction with the complete range of

finance schemes available, they can provide the best package to you with

unrivalled levels of service.

Carisma Vehicle Solutions Ltd has access to a huge database of both new

and used vehicles that are available. If you have a requirement of any

description, contact Carisma and they will search the entire country to

find the right car at the right price for you. They also offer finance options

with either personal contract hire or contract purchase. Both methods

of finance require you to determine your annual mileage to determine

the cost; the hire option usually runs for two or three years whereas the

contract option, whilst also running for a fixed time period, allows you to

purchase the vehicle at an agreed price at the end of the contract.

For businesses, Carisma offers contract hire, leasing and fleet

management. Contract hire is an ideal product for companies who

would like to have no operational risk in running their own vehicle fleets.

Contract hire allows you to run a new vehicle for a fixed monthly payment

assisting cash flow, releasing capital and removing the risk of depreciation.

Contract purchase is a very flexible and affordable way to drive a new

vehicle utilising the future value of a vehicle to reduce the monthly costs.

This value is guaranteed based upon an agreed annual mileage and allows

an option to purchase the vehicle for this price. Contract purchase allows

you to run a new vehicle for a fixed monthly payment and removes the

risk of depreciation. Often contract purchase means you can afford an

even better vehicle than perhaps you initially thought. Both contract

hire and purchasing can offer a package to include routine servicing and

maintenance costs for a fixed monthly rental. All work is carried out by the

main dealer network and at a dealer of your choice.

Fleet management is a service which runs alongside your chosen

acquisition route. Carisma Vehicle Solutions manages your fleet on your

behalf with the objective of reducing the management and administrative

burdens associated with running a fleet of vehicles. Fleet management,

through Carisma Vehicle Solutions, is designed to meet the needs of each

client’s individual own business. With the fleet management service

handling the day to day queries of drivers, maintenance, breakdown cover,

accident management, daily rental, road tax, MOT and vehicle disposal,

your internal fleet administration can be very noticeably reduced.

Carisma Vehicle Solutions Ltd is committed to building long term

relationships with all of their clients.

Olympic Relay comes to the Test Valley

On the afternoon of

Wednesday 11 July

Andover sees the

once-in-a-lifetime arrival of

the Olympic Torch Relay. It is

expected to arrive in Andover at

3.35 pm, with the relay starting

at 4.15 pm and leaving the town

at 4.42 pm. It is anticipated that

thousands of people will gather

for what is likely to be the

largest single event in Andover

this summer and crowds are

expected to gather well in

advance of the start time and

will take a while to disperse

after the relay moves on.

Any residents and businesses

near to the Torch Relay Route

who may be affected should

have already received notice of

the event. It is hoped that this

advance notification will allow

people to plan accordingly and

also highlight the best viewing

points for anyone wanting

to see Andover shine in the

Olympic Torch light. Details of

the temporary road closures will

be available online as they are

finalised.

Councillor Martin Hatley,

Deputy Leader of Test Valley

Borough Council said “With

the Olympic Torch now firmly

on British soil, the countdown

to its arrival in Andover has

begun. Andover will be ready

to welcome the Olympic

Torch relay and excitement

is mounting as we prepare

to celebrate its passing with

cheering crowds and special

events being held by businesses

and schools. It will be an

historic occasion and I am sure

one that will be remembered for

many years to come”.

He continued “The safe

management of the event is

the responsibility of Test Valley

Borough Council who are

working in conjunction with

the police, highway authority

and other agencies to ensure

any disruption is kept to a

minimum”.

Stockbridge is Sparkling!

Stockbridge welcomed the first ever Sparkle Day on Monday 28th May

2012. Sparkle Days are a new initiative from the Council’s Environmental Service and are part of the successful ‘Love Where You Live’ litter campaign.

The aim of the day is to add just an extra bit of sparkle to an area. During the day, roads and footpaths were swept and litter bins emptied and washed. Other permanent fixtures along the footpaths were cleaned, litter picked, grass verges cut, weeds removed and trees and shrubs tidied up. In addition, twenty Hypericum Hidcote (St. Johns Wort) shrubs were planted and two benches re-stained. The Recycling Officer was also on hand to advise residents about any waste and recycling issues and 190 Green Guides to Recycling in Test Valley were delivered to local homes.

The feedback from the day was very positive with many residents asking about the initiative, commenting that it was a good idea and thanking

the team for their hard work.

The Council’s Environment Portfolio Holder, Councillor Peter Boulton gave the new initiative his full support. He said, “Stockbridge is a shining example of a town bursting with many small successful shops and refreshment establishments. The traders, visitors, and residents care very much about the appearance and the cleanliness of the town so it was an excellent location to launch this new campaign. Enhancing and preserving the natural and built environment is one of the Council’s key aims and this innovative initiative will give many of our towns and villages an intense clean up and polish treatment.” Stockbridge Parish Councillor, Graham Miller, joined in with the praise and said “Thank you for bringing this initiative to Stockbridge. It is very much appreciated so a ‘big thank you’ to the Sparkle team”.

Are you realising your potential?

Do you have talent you haven’t yet realised – or skills you’ve simply put

on the backburner?

How do we go about finding out what we’re good at?

Throughout my corporate career I was subjected to plenty of training and psychometric testing which gave me useful insights and indicators but it wasn’t until I worked with someone one to one that I could take time out and really go through a thorough process to get to where I am today – a self employed hypnotherapist. But maybe I have other talents?Music has always been close to my heart but could I paint, make jewellery or learn a new language?

The process of learning is interesting too – some of the most important skills we undertake such as walking and talking, we master in our early years. We fall down, we get up again; at no point does it enter our mind not to bother or think it’s just too difficult. However the older we get the more obstacles we seem to put in our way rather than just deciding to do it. I’m currently undertaking an advanced hypnotherapy course and my tutor is very much pushing the practical and putting the theory aside. I’m really enjoying going out of my comfort zone and trying new

ideas and concepts – the more I do the more I learn. A friend of mine has started to learn to paint and of course, whatever materialises on the paper we have a habit of judging. “It’s not very good” can often transpose into “I’m not very good at this”, however the DVD tutorial he’s using suggests he paints “for the bin” which is a lovely way of taking the pressure off enabling his style to develop.I’ve been inspired by the Channel 4 programme “Hidden Talents” which explores how far natural talent can really go.After tests, nine participants were selected and invited to work alongside an expert for a few months and WOW what a transformation; no one being more surprised than the people themselves! James a 19 year old homeless ‘A’ level drop out with an aptitude for languages, masters Arabic in just 19 weeks! You too can take these tests http://www.channel4.com/programmes/hidden-talent/articles/take-the-hidden-talent-tests So what are you waiting for? Record-breaking attempt from Lands End to John O’Groats on a tandem.

On 30th June, Hampshire-based Dominic Irvine and Ian Rodd will be looking to break the long-standing record for non-stop cycling on a tandem from Lands End to John O’Groats. The duo have decided to embark on this challenge in order to raise much needed funds for Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s ‘The Magic Wand Appeal’ and have set a fundraising target of £50,000. This is a charitable appeal to raise funds to redesign and refurbish the children’s unit in The Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester, which aims, where possible, to minimise the trauma to a family with a child in hospital.

According to the Road Records Association, the men’s tandem bicycle from Lands End to John O’Groats record is held by Pete Swindon and John Withers and has been an unbeaten record since 1966. They completed this in two days, two hours, 14 minutes and 25 seconds (50 hours, 14 minutes and 25 seconds). This challenge will involve 842 miles of non-stop cycling and usually takes experienced cyclists around ten days to complete.

Olympic gold medalist, James Cracknell (along with Jerone Walters and Rebecca Romero) has tried and failed to break this record twice. In the most recent attempt, they had 68.3 miles to go but had to stop with the support team saying “they simply couldn’t continue”. As well as an endurance cyclist, Dominic is an international speaker and facilitator and is all about ‘Maverick Thinking’

The Magic Wand Tandem Challenge

- examining how ordinary people can do extraordinary things – hence this challenge. ‘Maverick Thinking’ breaks through limitations and enables individuals, teams and organisations to excel beyond what might be considered reasonable. Ian, who is also a keen rower, is a consultant paediatrician at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Dominic comments: “This is very much a TEAM effort, which includes a whole raft of individuals such as drivers, a coach, mechanical support, medical support and route-planners. If we break the record, it will be because we, as a team, broke the record. We have chosen to do this challenge as a demonstration of the extraordinary things ordinary people can achieve when you put your mind to it and we will also be raising funds for The Magic Wand Appeal. The extraordinary service provided by the children’s unit at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital needs an extraordinary effort to help raise these funds.”

Dominic and Ian have been training exceptionally hard for this challenge and pre-rode the course at the beginning of May to test out the prototype tandem bike supplied by Yorkshire-based JD Tandems.

Among those who ran were Daniel Creed and son Theo, aged just ten months old, from Yeovil in Somerset. Running the course with Theo sitting comfortably on his back, Daniel raised £368 in sponsorship to thank the team at Southampton General Hospital who cared for Theo when he had surgery to close a hole between the two upper chambers of his heart, just six weeks ago.

Laura Creed who supported her husband and son on the day said, “We would like to thank all of the people that helped to fix Theo's heart. The surgical team, the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and all of the staff on E1 Ocean ward were fantastic, they helped to reassure us all the way through and the care they provided was first class.”

Laura continued, “Considering how poorly some of the children on the ward are, it is a positive and happy place to be. We hope that the sponsorship we raised

for the fun run will benefit another family who have to use the facilities at Southampton General Hospital.”

A number of runners also took part to raise money for the Red & White Appeal which aims to build a specialist day treatment unit for patients with leukaemia and other life threatening blood disorders, from across the region.

Sponsorship money from the fun run is still being counted in. Any outstanding sponsorship can be posted to Suzie Simmons at Southampton Hospital Charity, Mailpoint 135, Southampton General Hospital, Southampton, SO16 6YD.

Frequently Asked Questions Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

Upholstery we specialise in cleaning and refreshing 3 piece suites (at our current offer price of £97). Fabric Master, our special upholstery and cleaning system is safe, gentle, and very effective. Fibres are restored to their original beauty and softness - you’ll see!

Rain rain go away, come again another day. Oh it’s back already!

A friend said recently that rain simply isn’t fashionable; rain in the summer is considered just so ‘last season’. Is he right? The moment lambing ends, it’s officially summer, and nothing will deter us from our utopian ideal of what it should be.

Magazines are full of recipes for those halcyon days of alfresco dining, and garden centres burst forth with blooms so we can recreate Chelsea in a terracotta pot. 'Homebase' and the like easily persuade us that we really do require new decking, garden furniture, outside lights and a gas barbecue big enough to roast a pig on. Then there’s this year's trend: Union Jack bunting, picnic rugs, paddling pools, hammocks, plates and cups that will happily see us all through the Jubilee, football and the Olympics!

So determined, even desperate, are we to enjoy the outdoor life that the very moment a yellow sun symbol appears on the weather map, we go berserk. The promise of sun renders the shops devoid of all summer essentials: burgers and sausages, salad and strawberries, bread rolls and

crisps, Pimms (complete with Union Jack label) and beer, barbi coals and firelighters fly from the shelves.

We are sadly in denial, steadfastly refusing to admit that the first week of Wimbledon is usually a wash out, and the Louboutins will be stuck in the mud when the going is soft on Ladies' Day.

Rain, far from being unfashionable, is actually a reliable classic, returning season after season. We may not welcome it, but we’ve learnt to wear it well. How many times have you stood under an umbrella emblazoned with Monet’s water lilies, huddled round the barbi trying to keep warm, wet to your knickers thanks to your stylish spotty mac being only ‘shower resistant’? But do you give in? No.

To survive the British summer you have to be made of sterner stuff; ask any camper or Glastonbury veteran. It’s time to wring out that stiff upper lip, be frivolous and have fun no matter what the heavens throw at us. After all, we’ll all be clad in North Face by the end of August!

What do you think?GG.

Q I want to convert my loft but the last time I paid someone to do

work on my house it ended in a dispute with the builder and I felt I’d been ripped off. How can I make sure that doesn’t happen again?

AHome improvements gone wrong leave many people feeling

‘once bitten, twice shy’ but there are some simple things you can do to sieve out the experts from the cowboys – and get the job done to your satisfaction, and on budget.

Before you start, outline exactly what work you want doing and what that includes . For example, if you are having a new kitchen put in, are you moving where the sink or washing machine would be?

Do your research to find the best people for the job. Check the Local Authority Assured Trader Scheme Network www.oft.gov.uk/laatsnwebsite or use TrustMark www.trustmark.org.uk to find a registered builders, or you can check online for websites with a feedback option to rate tradesmen.

Once your checks have provided a list of reputable tradesmen, get references and three written, itemised quotes from different builders. Make sure your quotes are

comparable, whether VAT is included and it is clear who is buying what materials - you or the builder.

It’s important that you talk through with your builder about what happens if something goes wrong and who pays – for example if there are delays in completing the job or you come across a complication.

Get everything you’ve agreed down on paper. Your contract with your builder should be in place to protect you and the trader. It is a legally binding document. Read through the contract and make sure that you obtain a written quotation and all terms agreed in writing. For more information, see the Builders and home improvements in the Consumer section on Adviceguide www.adviceguide.org.uk.

Farewell to King's Somborne School'sHeadteacher

As we draw towards the end of the academic year it is time for us to

say goodbye to Mr Nick Winning, who has been Headteacher at King’s Somborne Primary School for the last 15 years.

As evidenced by the school’s recent OfSTED we have a very successful school in King’s Somborne. Nick would be the first to recognise that the school’s achievements are the result of a team effort over many years by pupils, staff, parents, governors and the wider community. However, the Head-teacher plays a critical role in the life of the school and the OfSTED report is a fitting testimony to Nick’s dedication, commitment and hard-work over the last 15 years.

I first met Nick 8 years ago when we were in the process of relocating to the area as a result of a job move. I remember, Nick making time to show us around the school and his uncompromising belief in an inclusive school which has high academic standards and develops the whole child in order to equip them to deal with the varied challenges of life. This was an important factor in our decision to choose King’s Somborne as our new home and we have not been disappointed.

School governors are given a privileged insight into the life of a school and the education system. I have had the opportunity to work closely with Nick during the last eight years as a Governor at the school. During this time I have observed a tireless pursuit of educational excellence without compromising the founding principles of the school. Nick’s dedication and commitment to the school and the children has

been exceptional. Nick’s blue Volvo parked in the school car park late into the evening and often at weekends has been a frequent sight for many of us in the village over the last few years and an indication of the time he was devoting to the school.

King’s Somborne school has a rich history, perhaps the most famous school in the country at one time. Founded by the Rev Richard Dawes, it was a pioneering school financed by the community for the benefit of the entire community. Whilst much has changed since the school’s founding days, Nick has first and foremost championed the founding principle of the school being an inclusive school, striving to ensure that every child is able to realise their potential and achieve their best.

Nick also leaves King’s Somborne school with a rich musical legacy that he has created and nurtured. A school band and one that is proficient enough to play with confidence at community events is not something that one would typically observe in schools of a similar size. Many children who have attended the school over the years, now have ongoing musical interests in their lives as result of Nick’s work.

On behalf of the school governors and the many parents, pupils and members of the community who have benefited from Nick’s hard work and dedication, we thank him and wish him every happiness in his retirement.

Wherwell PrimarySchool News

It is surprising to see just how much our village school manages to fit into the term

in addition to the schoolwork that fills the day. We are, as always, grateful to the staff, PTA, parents and children for all of their hard work throughout the year and to the community for supporting our events. Many of you may have noticed several groups of pupils walking around Wherwell village on a very wet Wednesday at the beginning of May. The children were looking at historic features of the village and were interested to learn lots of things about the houses that they usually just drive past. The 12th and 13th of May weekend proved to be a busy one for many of our families with the Wherwell Pageant on Saturday and the Annual Harewood Forest Fun Run on Sunday. Twenty-four pupils from the junior classes represented the school at the Pageant. On Sunday, the Harewood Fun Run, a joint event for school and Wherwell Playing Field Association, took place with one hundred and thirty six runners and walkers enjoying a sunny morning.

The children of Class 3 were very pleased to be invited to an Olympic Sports Festival at Test Valley School on Wednesday 16th. This was a fantastic opportunity for many to develop their sporting skills and, for others, a chance to show the courage and determination to meet personal challenges. The School Spring Fete on the 20th got the fete season off to a great start despite it being a rather chilly May Day. The children from years 2, 3 and 4 entertained us with their

maypole dancing while the younger children performed an original Olympic dance. With your help we managed to raise £3,800 towards enhancing the children’s outdoor play equipment.

Fortunately the weather warmed up over the next week, which coincided with National Walk to School Week. Families closer to school took advantage of the warm, sunny mornings to walk every day, while several children managed to confuse the bus driver by walking to a different bus stop. It was a great opportunity to leave the car behind and enjoy the outdoors. The children and staff celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in style by wearing red, white and blue to their street (playground) party on Thursday 31st of May. A Jubilee lunch was the start of an afternoon of activities and fun, which was planned, prepared and coordinated by the children in Class 5. On behalf of the PTA, the teachers presented their children with celebration medals and Union Jack flags. The afternoon was completed by an enthusiastic performance to the parents of Sing, the Jubilee song written by Gary Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Why not have a look at the school’s website www.wherwell.hants.sch.uk where pictures of many of these events and much more news about our school can be found.

If you would like further information about Wherwell Primary School then please do call us on 01264 860384 and talk to Mr King (Head Teacher) or Mrs Pritchard (Administration Officer).

Croquette de Crabe

METHoD Melt the butter over medium heat, slowly add the flour and mix thoroughly with a

wooden spoon until it forms a “ball”. Slowly add the mixture of wine, cream and grated

nutmeg. Stir in slowly until it forms a “ball” again. Remove from the heat, add the crab

meat, eggs and mix well, then taste and season. Next butter and flour a baking pan,

divide the mixture into small portions with a knife. Flour your hands and form the

portions of mixture into small round or oval shaped cakes. Bake in oven for 25 minutes

at 180°C, or check that they are cooked through with a knife, when the blade comes out

dry after pricking the cakes they are ready. The cakes can be kept in a fridge for up to

3 days, cooked or uncooked, if covered. To re-heat the caked put them into the oven on

a butter/oiled pan for ten minutes, they are delicious with a beautiful salad. This recipe

is very popular in my restaurant. If you want you can freeze them too. When defrosting

them it is best to do it slowly over night in a fridge.

SAuCE

A simple and quick way is to use a tin of good bisque. Obviously, it’s better to use some

crab shells. This is a good way to “improve the tinned bisque”. Next chop an onion

finely and three cloves of garlic and fry them in a little oil. Add some thyme and bay

leaves, a little brandy or whisky to taste then Flambe. Pour a small glass of white wine

into the bisque and let it simmer slowly. Add some thick cream, salt and pepper and a

little tomato paste if not “red enough” and two drops of Tabasco to give some “bite”.

If the cakes are served on a salad, shape them smaller and sprinkle the sauce over.

• 200g Good quality crab meat (if tinned/

canned not pasteurised if possible)

• 50g Butter

• 70g Flour

• 125ml White wine

• 125ml Cream

• 2 Eggs

• A little grated Nutmeg

• Salt/Pepper

“Lovely list marked by enthusiasm and passion for the subject. Lots of interesting stuff from France, especially the Rhône, Burgundy, Languedoc-Roussillon and the Loire. “Stone, Vine & Sun was one of the first of Britain’s current welcome wave of small independent wine merchants selling mainly by word of mouth and the internet. The company’s speciality is hand-picked wines retailing for £7-12 that offer really solid value and character, so I have found not a few to recommend in my current Top 100 wines being featured in the Financial Times”, Jancis Robinson, MW, 2nd December 2011, www.jancisrobinson.com

A lot of Hampshire wine drinkers don’t know there’s a multi award-winning, critically acclaimed wine merchant, with lots of distinctive wines (many organic or bio-dynamically farmed), just on their doorstep. Perhaps it’s because our wine warehouse is tucked away on a farm estate: but as we don’t have to pay high street rents, and we have space to ship in container loads of wine from all over the world, we can sell to you at extremely fair prices, and deliver to you for free.

We hope you will discover us. The best way to do so is to come and taste the wines we offer. Alternatively do look at, or indeed order from, our website; call us for advice; or come and see us in our shop.

Success of Andover Farmers Market leads to extension

The success of the new look Andover Farmers Market will see it continuing until

the end of 2012. A drop in visitor numbers last year led to fears that the market would close, but negotiations between Test Valley Borough Council and Hampshire Farmers’ Market resulted in an agreement to trial a ‘new look’ Farmers Market in Andover for six months.

The first of these took place in January this year and since then there has been a steady increase in both the number of stalls and visitors. The success of the project now means that the collaboration between Test Valley Borough Council and Hampshire Farmers’ Market has secured a continuation of the market in Andover until the end of 2012.Councillor Ian Carr, Leader of Test Valley Borough Council welcomed the extension. He

said: “The market organiser and traders clearly signalled that they wanted to continue coming to Andover and I’m pleased to say that local residents and visitors have really got behind the initiative. The last six months have proved very successful and I am delighted that the market will now continue until the end of the year. This further extension will provide an opportunity not only for regular visitors to enjoy the market but more importantly enable more people to attend through the summer months. One of our corporate aims is to stimulate a competitive local economy and I hope that the Council has helped in this by giving the market a longer term future”.

The next Andover Farmers Market will take place on Sunday, 15 July 2012 in Andover High Street.

Stockbridge Music Concert 2012

Following on from the

success of their first

concert on 11th May,

Stockbridge Music are pleased

to announce the details of their

second concert to be held on

Saturday 6th October in St

Peter’s Church, Stockbridge.

Stockbridge Music has been

set up to bring Chamber Music

of all varieties to Stockbridge,

inviting professional musicians

to perform, such as the London

based string quartet Pro Musica,

who performed the first concert

to a full house, as well as local

musicians and students.

For this concert, they have

invited The Jane Austen Singers

to perform a concert of Sacred

Choral Music covering six

centuries in St Peter’s Church

, Stockbridge. Their director,

Tim Lowden, an ex-chorister of

Winchester Cathedral, lives in

Longstock and, for the last six

years, has brought his singers

to sing in the annual Advent

Service of Lessons and Carols

held in St Mary’s Church

,Longstock, now a well attended

and permanent feature in

Longstock’s calendar..

The singers were formed in 1975

and built up a fine reputation

for their performances of sacred

music, chamber performances

of the major Oratorios as well

as madrigals and part songs.

Having performed in the City of

London and Petworth Festivals,

The Anvil, Basingstoke and

St John’s Smith Square, they

are now devoting their future

concerts to sacred ‘Cathedral

Music’.

This will be their first concert

performed in the UK since 2000

and it is anticipated that their

following will attract a large

audience.

Full details of this concert will

be released nearer the date, but

this announcement is designed

to ensure you put 6th October in

your diaries.

Tickets will cost £8 and will

be available from Robinsons,

one other box office(to be

announced) and at the door on

the night. There will be canapes

and wine served prior to the

start of the concert for which a

small charge will be made.

Crikey. That’s what I thought as I stood by the side of the steep racetrack. The family Pagan were at Red Hill Cycle Centre on Hog Hill, Ilford, for a longboard event.

Star I was a few metres further up the hill on the starting line with fellow longboarding chums. Next to me, stood a young man with his arm in a sling: “I broke my collar bone on my first run down here yesterday,” he smiled. Not what I wanted to hear.

Suddenly, Star I and chums were off, careering down the hill and into the chicanes at the bottom, before tackling the broad sweeps left and right of the undulating track. It looked really fast, but once back to the start again, Star I was less than impressed: “It’s so frustrating Mum! I can’t get above thirty-two!”

“Thirty-two what?”

“ Miles per hour – I need to be faster!”

“Err, right.” As a parent I was feeling just a tad irresponsible. “Please be careful,” was the best I could offer.

This had potential disaster written all over it. Star I and eight lovely chums all determined to reach the elusive thirty-five miles per hour. This was to be achieved by hurtling down a hill crouched on a thin piece of plywood with plastic wheels. Of course, I realise the precision technology that goes into the manufacture of the ‘deck’ (or board to you and I), and I know the wheels are not plastic but must surely be honed from pure Kryptonite, judging by the amount they cost.

Plus, according to the type of longboarding in which one is partaking, and the prevailing climatic conditions, you will require specific types of deck and several sets of wheels and ‘trucks’ – I think they're the metal bits that connect the wheels to the board. Then there are the vitals of the sport: pads for wrists, elbows and knees, plus crash helmet and, in the case of this downhill event, full racing leathers, all of which makes no difference to the fact that your heart is in your mouth when one of your nearest and dearest careers past you downhill.

Cake was required; carbs would supply energy and if ever there was an occasion for stress-eating, this was it. Four

pieces of bread and butter pudding would do the trick. Star I demolished it with gusto, then I looked around for Star II, who is no stranger to the delights of cake. The Husband could be seen happily videoing on the hill but Star II, however, was nowhere to be seen.

“What do you mean, ‘not with me Sandra love?' Oh god… hang on, what’s that?”

Far away, a dot on the horizon turned out to be Star II jogging along the off-road cycle track, totally oblivious to the mountain-bikers approaching from behind. Nothing for it, I sprinted off (not easy after a slab of cake) down the cycle track in a slightly vain attempt to catch Star II. “You’ll have to go some to catch up, Sandra” were The Husband's supportive words.

Now I’m not au fait with the delights of mountain-bike tracks, but I hadn’t realized that this one was covered in loose gravel and that the corners were in design similar to a velodrome. The sun was now beating down, and the track had something of Death Valley about it; was that a mirage or was that really Star II way ahead, giving me a cheery wave?

It was all going rather well and I was sure I was gaining until, on a steep bend… ‘Mind out, coming through!’ - a burly man on a bike hacked by. I lost not only my balance but also my dignity, as I was left spinning on the gravel in a cloud of dust muttering the immortal phrase, “When I get my hands on you, I’ll…” Eventually I limped through the final uphill section of the track to find Star II patiently waiting at the top: “Hi Mum that was great! Can I have an ice cream now?”

Let's just say my response clearly indicated that ice cream was off the menu. I offered a piece of squashed, slightly dusty cake instead.

With Star II secured, we were free to watch the final races. Star I came fourth in the junior section, with chums coming first, second and third.

As for the top speed, I absolved myself from anxiety and guilt by simply not enquiring. Best not, it’s all got to be done again in August…

Sandra Pagan.

It's all downhill...from here?

Fire Garden at Stonehenge for the London 2012 Festival

As the sun goes down over one of Britain's most iconic World

Heritage sites, French outdoor alchemists Compagnie Carabosse fan the flames of our imaginations with an elemental Fire Garden at Stonehenge.

A magical, sensory experience awaits you as Stonehenge is transformed into a glowing fairytale environment where fire sculptures dance in the landscape, flaming fire pots animate the stones and cascades of candles line the pathways.

Carabosse have staged their striking installations across Europe and the world. Each event is unique to its specific location, and here they create a remarkable moment in the historic Wiltshire landscape,

especially presented by Salisbury International Arts Festival for the London 2012 Festival.

The Fire Garden will run in the evenings from Tuesday 10 July 2012 - Thursday 12 July 2012, from 9pm until midnight, with last admission at 11.30pm. Spend 30 minutes or an hour one evening and enjoy this gloriously atmospheric feast for the senses.

Fire Garden is part of the London 2012 Festival, a spectacular 12-week nationwide celebration from 21 June until 9 September 2012 bringing together leading artists from across the world with the very best from the UK.
