TALKING POINTS1. Be a voter! Thank you for

voting!2. Plan ahead when you will

go to the polls.3. In many states, recalls of

inadequate legislators is called voting!

4. Go with a neighbor to the polls . . . then you’ll get there! We’ve got your bal-lot proposals and munic-ipal candidates here (see page 4)

5. No matter what conserva-tives say, there’s no “liber-al media!”

6. Republicans use language to bamboozle you.

Some People Already Voted From Home

So When? — If you’re not one of them, have you decided when you will go to the polls on March 15th?

Plan Now! — If you plan now, you are much more likely to get there. Plan now or you’ll never get there! With everything else you’re doing, it’s so easy to tell yourself that your one vote won’t count very much — but if everyone feels the same way, what do you think will happen?

• Are you going in the morning? • At noon? • In the afternoon? • After work?

Plan Now!

Do you live in one of the 20 Palm Beach County communities which have local city council elections, or one of the 5 communities which have Ballot Amendments on the ballot (see pages 4 and 5)? If so, your vote is important. Don’t sit home.

Make It A Habit!Vote In Every

Election!

15 Things Everyone Would Know If There Were A Liberal Media

by akadjian. Promoted from diaries by Susan Gardner.

Part 5 [continued from Things 12-14 in the February 1, 2016 issue]

Thing 15

15. Media consolidation — Six corpo-rations—- Time Warner, Disney, News

Corporation, Viacom, Comcast, and CBS - control roughly 90% of the media in the U.S.

For Profit — These companies are in business to make a profit. This is why you'll find plenty of advertisements in the media.

• Entertainment? Check. • Sports? Definitely. • Weather? Yep. • You'll also find plenty of "if it bleeds, it leads"

stories designed to hook you in. • Vendors, witnesses recall Venice hit-and-run

horror. • Fort Hood trial turns bizarre as shooter grills

witnesses. • There's also plenty of political bickering:

Democrats said this, Republicans said that. We let you decide (but we never weigh in with any facts or fact-checking).

What Won't You Hear? — You won't hear the "liberal media" discuss the corporate media.

What To Make Of This — If the media were "liberal," it would serve the public interest and shine a light on issues like the ones above. More people would also have a better understanding of global warming, peak oil, population growth, po-litical lobbying, government's role in a function-ing economy, how much we spend on the military, and countless other issues.

More Likely — What you’re more likely to see in the media, however, are stories designed to get

you to buy their paper, or watch their show, or listen to their radio station. If it bleeds, it ledes. This is why the media is concerned with scandal, celebrities, gossip, and fear. If anything, our news consists of paid advertisements and outlets too scared of offending anyone to publish much of substance. Investigative journalism is also expensive; entertainment is cheap. The way this corporate media behaves may not be surprising. I apologize if you feel any of this is beating you over the head.

This Buzzfeed-style list wasn't intended to introduce this idea as new (others have done a much better job), but rather to highlight the sheer absurdity of a "liberal media" for an audience who may not see it.

One way to approach the topic is to simply ask: If we have a "liberal media," where are the liberal stories? ###

Six Ways Republicans Use Language To Frame The Issues

Ways 4 — 6

4. Appeal To Fear. Democrats still think most people vote with their heads.

Republicans long ago figured out that many peo-ple vote with their hearts… and even if you vote with your head, emotional appeals are powerful. Not everyone is a rational voter and fear is a pow-erful motivator. How else could Republicans get poor individuals without healthcare to oppose re-ceiving healthcare? Here are a few examples of ef-fective Republican frames premised on fear:

• Death panels• Cash for caskets• Socialized medicine• Economic terrorism • Homosexual agenda• Axis of evil• Ticking time bomb • Loaded gun• We can fight them over there, or we will fight

them over here• Welfare queens

5. The best defense is a good of-fense. If the other party has policies that

will help people and that people would naturally support, you have to figure out a way of making the good seem bad… or, to rally support for your policies that harm people and go against their best interests, making the bad seem good. Here are ex-amples of how Republicans accomplish that:

• Tree huggers• Pin-headed intellectuals • Overly mature tree harvest

These Republican policies were anything but what they claimed:

• Clear skies• Healthy forests• Intensive forest management (of course, the

key word is “intensive”… as in “they inten-sively cut down trees”)

6. Bamboozle everyone. If all else fails, bamboozle the public. Here are some

Republican frames that are confusing and mask the reality of what they were doing:

• Negative economic growth (Reagan’s expla-nation of his recession)

• “A pre-dawn vertical insertion of an interna-tional peace-keeping force” (Reagan’s expla-nation for his invasion of Grenada… in the morning!)

• Coalition of the willing (George W. Bush’s description of the few countries coerced into supporting his invasions)

• Enhanced interrogation techniques• Creationism … and it is now called “intelligent

design”###

R e p u b l i c a n s A r e i n t h e W a y ! V o t e T h e m O u t !

I Never KnewGee, I never knew that:

• everyone in society was able-bodied and disease-free,

• that discrimination never existed, • that what impacts one person has

absolutely no bearing on the “rest of us,” • that everyone with money attained

all of it in an honest manner, • that all welfare programs such as

corporate subsidies were bad, and that we did not need

• stop signs, • sewage systems, • airports, • courts, • police protection, • schools, • a standing military, • postal delivery,

and all those other horrible government programs that only the richest among us pay for and only the poorest among us use!

— Dr.Robert Watson

And the RepublicansJust . . . Don’t . . Care.
