WHAT IS THE EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM?The Externship Program offers students the opportunity to earn academic credit for performing legal work outside of the classroom in approved legal settings such as government entities, public interest organizations, and courts. Under the supervision and mentorship of practicing attorneys and judges, students undertake legal tasks and apply their academic studies to real cases.
The primary educational goals of the program are to provide students with the opportunity to:
• increase their knowledge of substantive law and the legal process; • improve their lawyering skills; • increase their understanding of the range of skills necessary for
effective lawyering; • improve their understanding of the issues related to professional
responsibility in legal practice; • develop productive working relationships; and• engage in reflective lawyering.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE: We welcome opportunities to partner with attorneys committed to mentoring students, providing an educational experience, and exposing students to the range of legal activities involved in the sponsoring attorney’s practice.
Attorneys interested in participating in the program should complete the Externship Questionnaire, which can be found on our website at http://law.tamu.edu/externship-program and return it to the Externship Director. You may also contact the Director for additional information and ques-tions.
