Make A Difference and Help Support A Cure for Breast CancerNational Breast Cancer Month

October is National Breast Cancer Aware-ness Month. We’ve seen NFL play-ers wearing pink gloves

and shoes, some of us have attended the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure and we’ve seen thousands of women and men wear pink rib-bons on their shirts to support awareness of this devastating disease.

Here’s a little back-ground on Breast Cancer:

In the United States, breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women. Each year, a small num-ber of men are also diagnosed with or die from breast cancer. Although the breast cancer di-agnosis rate has increased since the early 1990s, the overall breast cancer death rate has dropped steadily.

It is estimated that approxi-mately $8.1 billion is spent in the United States each year on treat-ment of breast cancer.

The best way to find breast can-cer early is to get screened. Talk to

your health care provider about what screening tests are right for you.

The 5-year survival rate for allwomen diagnosed with breast cancer is 89 percent. This means that 89 out of every 100 women with breast cancer will survive for at least five years. Most will live a full life and never have a recurrence. Your chances of sur-

vival are better if the cancer is detected

early, before it spreads to other parts of your body. In fact, when breast cancer is found early and confined to the breast, the 5-year survival rate is

98 percent. Thatis why it is so im-

portant to take steps to detect breast cancer in

its earliest stages.

Many of our grandmothers, mothers, sisters and daughters die of this terrible disease. I ask you to support one of the many non-profit programs that work to find a cure for Breast Cancer.
