Today was our annual Polar Bear Ride and it was a beautiful day for a ride. There were two starting points, one from the south that was lead by Tom Sprague and one from the north, which was lead by John Osborn. Thirty riders met at our house for chili and corn bread. Seven people brought chili so we decided to have a chili contest. Three im-partial judges were selected, Dexter, Jimmy and Lyle. It was a tough decision, and the judges de-clared Dave Strebbing the winner and Linda Jackson as first runner up. When Dave was inter-viewed, he stated, “This Minnesota boy beat the Texas boys for the second time”. There was 170030 plenty of corn bread and deserts. Next big event on the calendar is our Blue Bonnet Rally on April 12 at Lady Bird Park. We all need to start getting ready now because before you know it April will be here. We need to start planning rides for the upcoming year. Some ideas are breakfast, coin flip, dinner and progressive dinner rides. We can also have some potluck dinners and picnics. Fun is the first work in the GWWRA motto and our chapter exem-plifies this. We are always open for any ideas from the members. The members make the this chap-ter run and I am proud to be your Chapter Director. John and Wanda Osborn Chapter Director

By Randy Reese Chapter O Should Rise to a

Higher Level…

The Rider Education Program (REP) Levels pro-gram has been around for many years, however not all riders aspire to achieve all four Levels. There are two facts which cannot be denied. One, we are all getting older each day. Two, motorcycle crashes are on the increase in Texas as well as nationally..

There are Four Levels in the REP. Level I is Safe-ty by Commitment, Level II is Safety by Education, Level III is Safety by Preparedness, and Level IV is Safety by Enhanced Commitment & Preparedness. The level you achieve is up to you. Yes, Level IV requires the commitment of the wearing of a hel-met. Even if you do not wish to become a Level IV we should ALL adhere to the first three levels.

Occasionally, we may have witnessed that some Level IVs do not always wear their helmet. Remember, we are not the GWRRA Sheriff Deputies. It is true the Level Fours have made a pledge but have you considered that when you go ONE MILE OVER the speed limit you are breaking the law, which is a lot worse than breaking a pledge. We are all responsible for ourselves. Let’s keep the peer pressure at home. We can ALL try to lead by example and wear all our safety equip-ment and let people know the potential benefits but let’s not drive members away by our insistence or pressure.

It would be a challenge for the Chapter O to have zero motorcycle crashes from now through 2014. This can start with our recommitment to the REP Levels Program and getting as many involved with the Levels program as we can. This can be an on-going goal to reduce the number of crashes in Tex-as. This movement should start today by getting to any riding enhancement course we can take, which will help us obtain this two pronged goal.

Schedule and take an Experienced Rider Course (ERC), a Trike Rider Course (TRC), a Trailering Course (TC), or at the very least, a Parking Lot

Practice (PLP) with a GWRRA Certified PLP Facilita-tor. Let’s not forget the Co-Riders who have the awe-some responsibility of helping the Rider. Don’t forget a good First Aid refresher course just in case you need it.

…Let’s get trained, reduce crashes and move

Chapter O to Higher Levels. 17846-01

By the way, I just turned in the safe miles that were reported this year (and I still have 13 riders still out), and in 2013 we rode a total of 255,461 safe miles! Congratulations on a quarter million miles this year! Let’s make it a goal to ride more of those together in 2014!

Ride Often, Ride Safely, and HEY!

Be careful out there!

TEXAS DISTRICT NEWS

David Vidrine

Texas District Director

As we get closer to a New Year I would like to thank all the Texas chapters who turned in their Charter Fees early. It makes it easier for your District

Treasurer, Diane Shultz to get the check for the District sent to National due December 1st. Sec-ondly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Chapters Directors and their core team that will be stepping down this year. We appreciate your support and dedication you provided to your chapter. I hope this gives you the opportunity to just relax and ride with your chapter.

Now I would like to congratulate the chapter friends who are stepping up to the plate to take the responsibility of Chapter Directors, Assistants and any new core team position they maybe filling. We appreciate you stepping up to carry on this task. It’s people like you that make my job easier. I want you to know that I am just an email or phone call away if you need anything. I am here to help you and if I don’t know the answer right away, I will make sure to find the answer and get back with you. Mid-Winter Round-Up will be on January 11th at the McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas. You can go on our website at www.gwrra-tx.org and there is a schedule as well as information on hotel accommodations. I hope to see many of you there. It’s important for the Chapter Directors to bring their core team with them. Remember this is a business meeting; bring any questions or thoughts you may have so we can help you out with an answer. It’s also a great opportunity for all new chapter officers and chapter friends to listen to ideas from other chapters to make their chapter FUN. The Texas District Team looks forward to meeting everyone at Mid-Winter. The team wishes everyone a very Happy New Year. Let’s all ride safe and remem-ber to have FUN in 2014! Your Texas District Director David Vidrine
