Writing is very important skill, because it is needed in many aspects. Writing must be

developed for all people especially for students. Based on the writer experience, students still have

difficulties to write individually. Therefore, in this research the writer would like to know whether

group work can develop students’ writing skill.

Adewumi Oluwadiya (1990: 128) says: “Writing basically is a process of communicating

something (content) on paper to an audience. If the writer has nothing to say, writing will not

occur”. Furthermore Adrian Doff (1988: 141) says: “Group works encourage students to share ideas

and knowledge; in discussion activity, students can give each other new ideas”. In this research, the

writer uses Pre experiment method with design one group pre test-post test, and the data used are

quantitative data. The quantitative data are taken from writing pre test and post test of 48 students at

second class of SMPN 1 Arahan Indramayu.

According to the result of calculation of the data, the writer knew that T-count = 4. 427>T-

table= 1. 679. It means that alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In other words, group work can

develop students’ writing skill. The average score of students’ pre test is 11. 605, and the average

score of students’ post test is 13. 584. It means the results of post test increase 1. 979 from pre test.

The result of this research can be concluded that students’ writing through group work can

help the students’ wriring individually be better. Group work is an alternative technique to be

applied in teaching learning process so, the writer suggest the teacher that it can be used as an input

in their teaching learning process, especially in writing.
