In language teaching we often talk about the four language skills, one of them is speaking.

Most of Indonesian students especially in SMP NU Sukra still have difficulties; they have handicaps

in learning English. Such the student often feels difficult in speaking practice, the students are lack

of motivation in learning English and they often feel bored and depressed with speaking. The

purpose of this research is to help students interested in English, so they can communicate with their

friend and also their teacher in the teaching and learning activity.

In this research, the writer used descriptive method. The hypothesis to be tested was there

improvement of students speaking ability after brainstorming technique applied in their learning

process. The population in the second year students of SMP NU Sukra is 213 students and 30

students as the sample. The instrument of study measuring the application is brainstorming

technique by giving questionnaire and test. To analyze the data the writer used Mean.

The result of this research were as follows: firstly, the pre-test there is one students who gets

excellent score, 1 student students or 3, 3% gets very good score, 10 students in percentage 33, 3 %

gets enough score, 8 students in percentage 26,6 % gets bad score, and then 11 students in

percentage 36,6% gets bad score. Secondly, there is a different result in the post test score. It can be

seen from the result brainstorming technique that is 5 students’ gets 90 score or excellent score in

percentage 16, 6 %. And only 2 students’ gets very bad score in percentage 6, 6 %. Based on the

description from the result, the writer concludes that brainstorming technique influenced the

students speaking ability.

The result of this study is hoped to be useful in enhancing students speaking ability.

Brainstorming as one of the teaching technique to helps the students to interest and active in

speaking activity. Therefore, the English teacher must give more motivation to the students in order

to make them interested in English so they are motivated to practice.
