Editorial
At the end of 2013 there will be a big shift in innovation and research politics. Transitioning from FP7 to Horizon 2020 all members of the European Union are well aware of research and innovation being the key factors to create sus-tainable growth and prosperity. Beside this European vision there are lots of national approaches to strengthen economy and survive the crisis. The textile and fashion industry in each country, even in specific regions, is supported by national funding schemes financing precompetitive research. For that reason, universities and research institutes in the member states are strong partners for the local companies. Furthermore, some of these research facilities are highly specialized and offer decades of experience in their fields of compe-tences. Why don’t we share this knowledge?
Experts from France and Germany published surveys on the future mar-kets and applications of fibre based materials. Both studies prove that we are facing big societal and global challenges such as climate change, shortage of resources or aging population. Problems on a global level require joint efforts across national boundaries and single industrial segments. The textile and fashion industry still has no strong communication platform where the overall performance of European textile research and applications become visible. EURATEX and the European Technology Platform are instruments to draw political attention to the needs and potentials of our industry. But inside these organizations national interests have to take a backseat. This way, the main objective to extend Europe’s lead in innovation and to transform this creativity to value can be achieved. We need visionary entrepreneurs, creative scientists and open minded policy makers to know each other and work to-gether.
The current survey maps fields of competences of im-portant research institutes all over Europe. Looking for a European partner, industrial experts and scientists might use this navigator to identify a suitable research institute nearby.
How does Europe prepare for the future?By Dr. Klaus Jansen, Forschungskuratorium Textil e.V., Berlin
Once upon a time… – a lot of fairy tales start like this. And in many cases a look
back is the starting point for future planning. In contrast to this common procedure we did not look into the past when starting to work on the project Perspectives 2025. “How is real-ity going to look like? How will we live in 20, 30 or 40 years?” – Senior experts and young students discussed these questions and came to remarkable results. Thomas Strobel, futurist of FENWIS GmbH in Gauting and leader of our expedition, is well experienced in moderating teams on the way of doing the thinkable in-stead of thinking the doable. The temptation to extrapolate the past is quite strong, but there is a way to withstand it. “Who thinks about the day after tomorrow suppresses the filter of experiences.” This methodology is called “retropolation”: The first step is a great leap forward to the far future of 2050. After drawing futuristic pictures to create a ‘good feeling’ for the new surrounding and defining characteris-tic assumptions we look back to the year 2025
and derive those developments, that are a prerequisite for a pathway to the expected fu-ture. From that the research requirements are derived for the period from today until 2025.
A team of 80 people collected hundreds of ideas and fields of application for textile ma-terials as elements of 10 major topics of fu-ture societal relevance. Some of the results are summarized in the brochure “Perspektiven 2025”. This is a small extract of characteristic examples:➜ Architecture is inspired by bionic principles and natural materials applied. Buildings in an existing context are monitored in their structure by textile integrated sensors. ➜ Clothing gets more individual, adaptive and multi-functional. Sensor and actuator materials increase comfort and safety for the wearer. Just-in-time production close to the customer saves time and avoids environmental impact by long transport distance.
➜ Energy demand is covered by renewable sources withoutcaus-ing emissions. Fibre materials produce and store energy at the point of use.➜ Food production becomes more efficient and closer to the consumer. Vertical-farming, aqua-farming, artificial meat and functional food feed a growing population. Potable water be-comes a precious foodstuff.➜ Individualized healthcare as well as sensor based assistance and therapy systems allow patients to be cared for at home.

➜ Mobility of the future comprises all devices and works emission-free in areas of high population density. Using a vehicle of common property substitutes possessing it. Hybrid light-weight materials save fuel and are to be recycled completely. There is more safety due to new assistant systems.➜ Production and logistics are computer optimized to save energy and materials. Value chains are local to have quick cus- tomer response. Product design is suitable for recycling to close material loops.➜ Ambient intelligence manages living com- fort directed by personal needs. Connect- ed to emergency systems, sensors detect vital parameters of the resident. Functional textile surfaces are able to glow, heat, cool, transport air and light or display infor- mation. Flexible room concepts enable living and working in the same environ- ment.➜ The future city is energy self-sufficient. Food, water and consumer goods are pro- duced locally. Traffic is regulated by volume and runs free of pollutant emis- sions. Closed loops of recyclable material and energy from renewable sources char- acterize a sustainable lifestyle.➜ Basic topics summarize developments like the growing population. While Asian and African civilizations are increasing, the ageing population in Europe is declin- ing. Another aspect is sustainability and climate change. Reducing the human foot- print on our planet below the limit of regeneration is the only strategy to have a long lasting perspective to survive.
A future life without textiles is unthinkable. There are thousands of applications for fibre based materials in every topic mentioned. The textile and fashion industry assumes social re-sponsibility and forms our future actively. To work like a discoverer’s map, the guidelines

“Perspektiven 2025” stop at an abstract level on purpose. Entrepreneurs preparing a busi-ness case are encouraged to build on these findings. The lesson we have learned is to co-operate with an external expert for structured foresight-processes.

The European textile and clothing industry is an increasingly diversified, innovation
and creativity driven industrial sector which in 2011 realised a total turnover of € 179 billion and employed 1.8 million people in more than 146,000 companies. The industry exported products worth a total of € 39 billion.
In the face of intense global competition, Eu-ropean companies are increasingly turning to research and innovation to ensure sustainable competitiveness. In this process the scope of application of fibre and textile-based materials and technologies continues to be broadened. In many large end markets such as transport, construction, energy, healthcare or the envi-ronment textile solutions increasingly replace
traditional materials and technologies based on their unique performance and sustainabil-ity characteristics. These are in addition to the large and attractive markets of fashion and in-terior design which offer interesting growth po-tential for European companies in their home market and worldwide due to superior creativ-
ity, quality, sustainability or new business models such as mass customisation.
Europe thanks to its diver-sified and innovative tex-tile industry base and its unrivalled textile research and education infrastruc-ture is uniquely positioned to benefit from many cur-rent industrial trends and societal challenges which require innovative material solutions. Intensified Euro-pean collaboration as well as research and innovation
support measures dedicated to this sector will not only further strengthen Europe’s industrial competitiveness but also provide solutions for many pressing problems of today’s world such as affordable healthcare for an ageing popula-tion, safe and energy-efficient buildings, infra-structures and transport systems, sustainable energy, food and biomass production or water management.

In this sense the European textile and clothing industry and its research community feels well placed for the opportunities presented by HO-RIZON 2020, the new European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.
The European textile and clothing sector has always been a highly active participant in Eu-ropean research and innovation funding pro-grammes such as the current 7th Framework Programme (FP7) or the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP).In 2004 the industry together with its research community set up the European Technology Platform for the future of textiles and cloth-ing to further improve European collaboration and to create a single interface with EU policy makers in the domain of textile research and innovation. Over the last 8 years, the platform which counts by now more than 750 active members, has developed into a real European reference network and helped to deploy over 300 million Euros of EU funding in collabora-tive textile research projects.This was a major achievement in this highly fragmented industrial sector, heavily domi-nated by SME’s and a corresponding research infrastructure, which traditionally acted more at local, regional or at best national level. Based on the growing power of the network successful member services were developed such as TEPPIES, a brokerage system to help building EU research pro-jects or ETTMA, a European tex-tile technology transfer system. Also policy initiatives such as the EU Lead Market for protective textiles and clothing and more recently the 7 European Textile Flagship initiatives were enabled thanks to the capacity to bring a critical mass of expertise togeth-er and speak with a single voice. In recent years a particular focus
was put on the creation of collaborations with related industry sectors also organised in Eu-ropean Technology Platforms to jointly tackle multi-disciplinary and multi-sector challenges. These collaboration exercises will be intensi-fied in the future to build complete innovation chains to enable radically new solutions for many of the societal challenges and key ena-bling technologies targeted in HORIZON 2020.
Overall the European textile and clothing in-dustry sees enormous opportunities for in-tensifying collaborative research and innova-tion efforts through deployment of European, national and regional capacities and funding sources. To better serve the industry and re-search community to exploit these opportu-nities, the European Textile Technology Plat-form has been set up as an independent legal identity in early 2013, supported by 3 founder members – Euratex, Textranet and Autex.In addition, numerous textile innovation clus-ters and networks have been created in recent years across many EU countries and many of the textile research centres listed in this bro-chure have extended their range of activities and added to their facilities and technologies. Even a few new textile research centres have been inaugurated recently.

The Institute of Textile Machinery and High Performance Material Technology (ITM) at the Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden) is one of the leading university research insti-tutions in the field of textile and ready-made clothing technology in Germany. The interdisciplinary approach to research practiced at the ITM includes processing fibre-based high tech materials, especially carbon, glass, aramid, steel and ceramic fibres with various technologies. The development of textile semi-finished products with integrated functions as well as textile end products is also a strength at the ITM.
The widespread and interdisciplinary research topics pursued at the ITM cover the entire pro-cess chain of textiles and ready-made technol-ogy. The interdisciplinary research conducted at the ITM encompasses machine design, de-velopment of new technology, product devel-opment, material modelling and simulations. Research is concentrated in the fields of light-weight engineering, textile reinforced con-crete, medical textiles and protective textiles. These engineering applications require the de-velopment of innovative fibre, thread and hy-brid yarn constructions, 2D and 3D reinforce-ment structures (including weaving, knitting,
warp knitting, stitch-bonding), finishes, coatings and func-tionalization technologies (e.g. for stitch-bonded textiles and membranes) as well as the nec-essary machinery designed and equipped to meet the demands of these high tech branches. CAE cutting technology, ready-made technology for technical textile products, new develop-ments in functional textiles and measuring and simulation tech-nology complete the research spectrum at the ITM.The ITM possess extensive ex-perience in the fields of textile reinforced composites. products (preforms) and CAx-process chains are also a main focus of the research and de-velopment at the institute. The ITM’s modern infrastructure enables successful education programs and research projects to be realized. A significant advantage is the interdisciplinary research activities of the ITM and the existing environment at the TUD. This unique setting and an already existent textile network facili-tates the ITM in the rapid development of new, innovative technologies and products in high-tech application areas.Beyond state-funded research activities, nu-merous projects are conducted with industry partners. ITCF - From molecule to textile material
The Institute of Textile Chemistry and Chemi-cal Fibers deals with R&D in terms of the pro-duction and modification of fibers and tex-tiles made of synthetic and natural polymers. Unique characteristics of the institute are: complete production chain of textile materi-als; expertise in all primary spinning technolo-gies; expertise in the use of nano-materials in textile and fibre applications; functionalization and processing, from cellulose to fibers and coatings: know-how in the field of physical treatment methods (plasma, UV and electron beam hardening); integration in the material-scientific research of the University of Stutt-gart including MPG and FhG.

ITV - Textile research from raw material to end product
The Institute of Textile Technology and Pro-cess Engineering Denkendorf develops inno-vative processes and textile products for the industry. Interdisciplinary material and prod-uct research is conducted for a wide range of applications – along the complete produc-tion chain – from the raw material to the end product. Important topics include technical textiles, life sciences, and smart textiles. Aside from the conventional fields of textile techno-
logy processes and mechanical engineering, biology and medicine are included.

DITF-MR - Making knowledge productive
The Center for Management Research devel-ops new concepts, methods, and tools for stategic and operative management as well as new organizational structures. Research activities focus on innovation and knowledge as well as on production management, and logistics. They concern the complete textile pipeline – from fiber production to end prod-uct marketing and its use in conventional (with special emphasis on non-conventional), fields of application. The results are best practice solutions and pilot systems that can be im-plemented in enterprises and textile industry value-added networks.

AUTEX stands for the Association of Univer-sities for Textiles. This is an interdisciplinary organisation grouping together universities with established international reputations in textile education and research. It was founded in 1994. The AUTEX Association consists of members within Europe (within and outside the European Union) and beyond. The current president is Prof. Chokri Cherif from TU Dres-den, Germany and the current vice-president is Prof. Dominique Adolphe from ENSISA, France.

A major contribution to the improvement of textile education is the realisation of the E-TEAM programme, a European Master pro-gramme in Textiles. The programme is deliv-ered by the leading experts in textile educa-tion and is organised at different locations in Europe. It was developed under the auspices of the Socrates programme of the European Union and started for the first time in 1998.
