Title of Scheme: Mixed media textile wall hanging inspired by Philip Treacy hat designs.

No. of Lessons:15Total Time: (5 doubles and 10 singles)13 hours and 20 mins

Group: 2nd year No. of Pupils: 24

Aims:Students will investigate and use a range of materials, techniques to construct a textile wall hanging.Students will develop personal skills as an individual and in small groups in the designing, making and resolving of designs issues.Students will appreciate the innovative work of hat designer Philip Treacy and be able to compare and contrast with other designers Louis Mariette and Stephen Jones Overall Learning Outcomes for the Scheme:

Compare and contrast Philip Treacy hat designs focusing on form, materials, shape, construction, colour, and texture with other contemporary hat designers

Student will experiment with and practice appliqué stitching considering the manner in which different stitches maybe employed to interpret particular elements of the wall hanging design.

Student will construction a design on fabric, stitch, motifs, colour and composition for surface design understand and apply different techniques through samples and making a mixed media textile piece

Investigating/Exploring/Creating (include illustrations, especially your own work):

Philip Treacy hats are… bold; vivid; theatrical; imaginative structure; unusual objects; couture; beautiful; unlikely bric –a- brac sculptures; part of the fashion world but also cross boundaries to visual arts; curvy; handmade creations; fun and glamorous to wear; worn on and around the head.Illustrations used to show students examples of Philip Treacy design:-

Examples of hat designs, sketch, style, shapes, materials

Investigating… different form, composition, shape of Philip Treacy hat designs; design concept with small scale thumbnail sketches

Exploring…require the students: observation drawings from hat shapes, make embellishments for surface design using some felt, stitch, appliqué attached onto the background fabric that will have some screen printed imagery; use of unusual and interesting materials i.e. inspired by bird feathers

Creating…require the students to undertake: observation drawings, initial design ideas; refined motif design; tracing; cutting shapes; embroidery ; translate own designs onto fabric and printing, design mood boards; sample work based on screen printing; felt and stitch techniques, a visual interesting completed textile wall hanging. This wall hanging will be rich; colourful; textured; bold; bright; experimental; fabrics; printed imagery;

Students are creating and producing as an individual (also see appendix re: techniques)

Stitch appliqué design felt

print Students as an individual will produce : Observational

drawing; produce design layouts, refined motif designs. 1 x A4 sample of different stitch; 1 x A4 appliqué; 1 x A4 felt

sample; 1 x mood board By the end of the teaching block each students will have

constructed a finished quality piece 1 x A3 mixed media textile wall hanging

Understanding/Evaluating: (include illustrations):- insert image of Philip Treacy hats and other designers for student to compare and contrast

Allowing for question and answer time after technical demonstration and lessons.

Evaluations through group reviews, research, homework, design worksheets.

Group presentation on research area. Students reviews will be teacher led evaluating their

progress throughout the scheme. Students will show evidence of problem solving in relation to

their design work within groups Exploring the work of Philip Treacy in relation to his

innovative hat designs and compare and contrast with other hat designers i.e Stephen Jones and Louis Mariette

Illustrations used to show students examples of other hat designers:-

Presentation on Philip Treacy designs Students will use internet for research work Record students work by digital camera Whiteboard to outline the structure of the lesson

Key words/phrases: Fabric, textiles Stitch, embroidery Appliqué, layering Felt Screen print, resist Design motif, translation simple lines, tracing Colour, composition Decoration, construction, deconstruction, embellishment flowing shapes, form, tactile surfaces designers, contemporary textiles

Teaching/Learning Strategies: Presenting information on the subject matter and key areas

of learning through visual aids Describing the key area, techniques and subject matter

verbally and through observation drawings Demonstrations to the group explaining techniques and

processes Homework will demonstrate if the student has grasp the key

areas during the lessons and further research will give the students knowledge, skills and confidence.

Students will create sample work and a final mixed media textile piece

Reviews will be teacher led of students work and learning throughout the whole teaching block

Materials: Selection of fabrics, felt merino wool and equipment, screen printing materials and equipment, sewing equipment, scissors, embroidery threads, needles, pva, fabric glue, tape, cartridge paper, fabric paint, cardboard, safety pins, tracing paper, paint, colouring pencils, wax crayons, protective cloth for surfaces light box; iron; hairdryers, string, pegs, sponge, bucket, cloths, tracing paper and pens.

where applicable to each lesson plan.

Differentiation: Use key words on whiteboard to support and map out each

lesson. Students will be encouraged to work to their own strengths

and adapt their designs and forms. A selection of softer materials will be available for those who have difficulties with cutting. Techniques will be adjusted to allow students to explore this. i.e. explore sponge stencil print as an alternative to screen printing if necessary.

A4 laminated photocopies of visual images and worksheets with key words.

Allow students to work at their own pace and own levels of capabilities

Students will be encouraged to simply design, textile piece and techniques used.

Timeline/Sequence of Lessons:Week One: introduce subject matter; construct; design; observation drawingsLesson 1 (single)Introduce the subject matter, key words and images of Philip Treacy hat designs. Group work : describe Philip Treacy hats and present back to the group.Homework: bring in an interesting hat and accessories from home for observation drawings in next lesson.Lesson 2 (double) – Construct and accessories own hat to use for 4 observation drawing and studies. i.e. shape, form, lines, colour, texture, pattern. Using paper, pencils, fabricsLesson 3 (Single) Review. Continue with observation drawings and studies. Homework: 2 x A4 samples simply design. Week two: Research mood boards: stitching and samplesLesson 4 (single) – Review homework. Introduce key areas for group research for design board and mood board. Homework for Friday: start on mood board for own design i.e. inspiration of hat design, colour studies, drawingsLesson 5 (double) Review research work. Introduce textile techniques i.e. stitch, appliqué and combined textile pieceLesson 6 (single) Review. Continue with textile techniques to produce 3 samples: homework finish three textile samples.

Week Three: screen printing: feltingLesson 7 (single) Review of work. Introduce key words associated with screen printing i.e. positive and negative space and demonstrate stenciling. worksheet for group Homework: prepare
