Back In The Frame

Actually, I have never been out of it; I have just been keeping a low profile, as they say. I am pleased to say I shall be on the National Forest Mission giving away my “Hot Potatoes” wherever there are takers and some “Hot Stuff, Hot Stories” this time round - the Bible Story in 15 minutes flat! Then, as a follow-on to the National Forest, Roger has invited me to help to set up and evangelize alongside him in Stratford, East London next year. This will be a delightful return for me to this multi-cultural environment, where I led the mission in 2001 before retirement! In the minds of the churches there, including some Black Pentecostalists, this will pave the way for mission outreach during the Olympics. If this isn't “going for gold”, I don't know what is!

In the meantime, I continue to work with John and Jonathan in overseeing, planning and mentoring the Society of Contemporary Evangelists; and, to cap it all, to act as a consultant to Dan. So, if you recognize the new picture, my face is still in the frame!

All grace to you,

What are your plans for 2010?

You've been praying again, haven't you? “Send missions to TFM!” We can honestly say that we have more missions lined up now than at any other point in our history, including wonderful opportunities to work across large areas. In particular, we have received several missions of Deanery / Circuit size. In 2010, alongside smaller missions, we need a significant number of team members for the following missions:

9-16 May Mid-Churnet, Staffs 2-3 teams15-23 May Bicester villages I 2 teams in 2 centres5-13 June Stratford, E London 3 teams5-13 June Aylsham, Norfolk 2-3 teams11-20 June Hook Norton, Oxon 2 teams18 Sep - 10 Oct Walk Saint David Potentially a large Walk missionOct / Nov Bicester villages II 3 teams in 3 centres

Will you join us? Maybe you are someone who comes regularly on Walk missions; if so, sign up - the sooner the better. You could be someone who hasn't been on a mission for a while or a prayer partner who has never joined a team. Will you come? These missions are all round the country and at all different times of the year - something for everyone! In 2009 we have had some “specialist” small missions and tended to recruit directly or locally, but for these missions we invite people to offer their availability for any mission.

Remember: there is only one thing you can do in life that could make an eternal difference to another person … that's to share the gospel with them. Here are some great openings to do that with 10s or 100s of people each day.

st31 Annual Prayer Partners' Conference

Held again at Swavesey College near Cambridge, The time was relaxed and one felt the

desire to continue the ministry of TFM and get out there once again. The Bishop of Lichfield, Jonathan Gledhill spoke of the importance of mission and Stephen Talbot from the Prayer Revival Centre, Eastbourne, on the importance within mission of prayer. Daniel spoke of the future and his own circumstances, of which you can read elsewhere in this newsletter.

A retiring offering raised over £2,500 for which we praise God.

the conference was attended by many friends but also a number of new faces.

Daniel and Bishop Jonathan at the Conference

Uganda

Ev Tate and Linda Berry were involved recently in a mission to Uganda. Working initially at the Kampala Children's Centre they then moved on to Jinga where accommodation was a little basic. Their role was to tell people, especially children, the good news and teaching adults how to teach and present the Gospel.

Ev Tate writes on her return from Africa: 'Thank you everyone for praying for us while we were in Uganda.Thank you Lord for being with us while we were in Ugandafor keeping us safe while travelling for keeping us all well apart from Linda's sickness early onfor all the children who heard the gospel and responded. We taught about 700 children in the 3 clubs.for the adults who made commitments or renewed their commitmentsfor all the locals who loved and served us so wellfor keeping the rain to only when we were inside somewhere (I only got wet once and that was on the bus!!)'

Romania

We were excited to learn recently that regular mission participant Dave Saunders showed a team of ten men from Hope Baptist Church, Rimnicu Valcea, Romania, how to approach people using the Personal Beliefs Survey. In the absence of Romanian KGPs, other gospel tracts were sourced. A training weekend was held in May with a mix of discussions and practical evangelism. The group discovered a real openness. Four people made prayers of commitment and many, sometimes lengthy, conversations were held.

The Pastor became one of the most enthusiastic. The Church has since appointed a coordinator to take the work forward from now on.

This Walk is taking shape now with changes happening week by week across the many mission centres. Our provisional plan shows 18 teams in Week One and 14 more in Week Two, with every major town and many of the villages of this area involved. We need you to pray for this mission:

s Prayer postcards. You can download these from (the Walk website). These will help you to pray imagin- atively for different aspects of the Walk. s Trials. Several key church leaders have

experienced ill health or other trials that have made preparing for the Walk difficult. Please pray they would persevere and overcome. sMission Preparers. Once again, we have

people working alongside the churches in every place. Pray that they will be effective in helping churches to make the most of the Walk. s Boldness. Pray this for team members but

also for churches planning programmes. All of us need a challenge not to rely on past experience but to see the “new thing” God will do.s Disciples. I don't say “converts”, though we

want to see people converted. More than that, we want to see them followed up, incor-porated into the local church and built up.

As it says in the Message Bible, “One more thing, friends: Pray for us. Pray that the Master's Word will simply take off and race through the country to a groundswell of response, just as it did among you” 2 Thess. 3:1.

Team Leaders Conference

As part of the preparations for this year's Walk a Team Leader conference was held at Whitwick in the Forest area in April. Some 60 potential leaders attended to hear Daniel speak on Mission generally and participate in a number of seminars; 'Help! TFM have made me a leader', 'Healing services', 'Mission possible - how to prepare and lead a mission' and 'Leading Team times'.

Although it had been intended that many would stay on to join the Churches that they would visit in September this proved not possible. However, a handful were able to do this and reported great encouragement from the locals as they go through their own preparations.

WALK IT OUT - Nebraska, USA

Inspired by the example of the walks organised by TFM, twelve men embarked on a Nebraskan walk mission from 3-7 June, our second walk mission (the first being in 2008). This year we took in three small towns in the beautiful farmland of our state and finished in Loup City to coincide with their Polish Days Festival. Each leg of the journey was about 16km and God provided glorious weather for the hours spent on the gravel roads.

During the four days I estimate we touched about 500 lives in a direct way:

100 spiritual surveys with individuals

50 people engaged in discussions on the country roads, on the streets of the towns and in pubs

200 gospel tracts were distributed to bystanders as we marched in the Loup City parade

Our team members spoke in 4 churches lifting up our burden for the Great Commission, encouraging folks to Christ-likeness

We are so grateful for your support and encouragement as we imitate your faithfulness and walk out the gospel to the "highways and byways" of our region for the glory and pleasure of our great God.

Holy Trinity, Tilgate Crawley Mission 30 May to 7 June

Led by Roger Murphy, this mission was part of the thChurches 50 Anniversary celebrations. There were

around 50 responses to the Gospel. The church team really pulled together with a small away team to make a big impact on the area. Here are some highlights;

· after spending most of the first day around the local pub watching the Cup Final (need I say more), three people - one a dedicated Chelsea fan - came across to the church on Sunday and responded to the Lord. Later, all three came to three more services/events later in the week.

A lady on the doors received Christ after watching God TV recently.

· The Golf day was excellent. Despite the searing heat, a couple of men responded to the message.

· Several ladies and men responded to Christ at the Curry Night.

· The team were invited into a primary school and shared the Gospel with all the children through an assembly and year lesson groups.

· The team and I had opportunities to lead people to Christ on the doors and with people on the fringe of the church.

· 60 people attended the Pub Quiz and some of the invited guests responded positively to Christ.

· The Lord moved with miraculous healings, deliverance, prophetic words, renewals of faith and the in-filling of the Holy Spirit at the Healing and Wholeness service. Four teams ministered to many people for 2 hours after the service!

· Daniel's vivid 'Night of Colour' drew 5 positive responses to the Lord Jesus.

· On Saturday, the church held a Flower Festival in the church, a History Exhibition covering the last 50 years in the Hall and a Family Fun Day outside in the grounds. Paul Woodman, the escapologist was one of the attractions. The day started quite miserably. It was cold with rain, but at 1.45pm before the 2.00pm start, the sun came out and it was dry! Hundreds of people came, with many responding to the message and others talking with us about faith. The sister of the three who came on Sunday responded!!

· The final celebration was good with a whole family network having come to the Lord at the Sunday service. An eight year old girl also made her first step of faith.

Please continue to pray for the Church and vicar, Rob Edwards and Andy Dean who did a tremendous job alongside the home team and also coordinating the away team. They are visiting those who responded and will be inviting them all to a START course in June.

· “the mission was absolutely marvellous”

Training

Part of preparing to go on mission is attending a training event. Often approached with a certain amount of trepidation, here are some trainee comments;

“…it was a great experience…” said Giles Evans-Pritchard of a training event and visiting the pub. “Our group met a non-Christian guy and his girlfriend who had both lost a parent recently. It was a real blessing to chat to them about their loss and how it related to their spiritual beliefs. Our group was buzzing from the experience afterwards and I was so encouraged to find I had felt a real love for the guy I had been chatting to”.

And from Chris Cobbold; “Can I say how much I enjoyed and benefited from the training day in Southampton. The Trainers did a great job. I have done loads of training events in my past - both in work context and church. This was short (hooray), to the point (great) and got us applying what we had talked about in the same breath. It made it the most worthwhile 24 hours of training I have experienced in close on 30 years as a Christian. It really has given me confidence that I can walk into a pub or knock on doors, though doubtless there will be that edginess that comes of stepping out into the unknown. So I am looking forward to the mission very much. It has also got me thinking of how we could apply this stuff to get folk from our churches in East Reading (I have to say especially men) out there on the streets and in the pubs engaging with people.”

And says Richard Hill; “Each of the 5 groups went to a different pub in the city centre and all of us came back with stories about how people were asking about the TFM sweatshirts and how this led to useful conversations.

We rang a few door bells at first but there was no reply. But then as we continued we met a number of people who were really open to answering the questionnaire (spiritual beliefs survey) and knowing God personally. It was really amazing how God had prepared the way for us as the people were so receptive and also in one case had recently been thinking about God and who Jesus is. It was really encouraging to see people showing interest in wanting to know God personally.”

And is it all just an exercise? Read this from Jonathan Mortimer following the Handcross in Sussex event;

"We had what I felt was a really encouraging training weekend with 17 attending. There were some good conversations in the pubs and on the doors, and one lady gave her life to Christ after completing the survey."

So thanks to all the teams who put on the training events. It's well worth it!

“We just had the training and nearly 400 homes were visited on Saturday afternoon so I went following up on Sunday and managed to visit the three live contacts …Thanks once again for excellent training - my Parish has already benefitted from this mission” Brian Leathers, Immanuel Stapenhill Training Weekend.

Roger writes...

As we enter the summer holidays it is good to share with you many stories from some of the missions which have been a real encouragement to us and a sense of God's hand at work in changing lives.

s After a good mission the premises booked for the Alpha course were too small - as well over 30 people came

s A team member on his first mission helped a number of people come to faith including a teenager soon to be confirmed.

s A church involved in a mission recently was challenged about their love for God and towards each other. We were able to help them to move

forward in paths of repentance, renewal and healing.

s An encouraging number of men responded on a recent mission which enabled a beginners group to commence.

s A young man converted at a recent outreach shared his story at a big Easter service of how the Lord had changed his life, despite some current life-threatening illnesses, and how he knew the peace of Christ. There was not a dry eye in the congregation.

s Three people responded to the Lord at a recent preparation weekend!

We give thanks for the number of missions coming in for the future, particularly in 2010. This is a great challenge at present and provides some wonderful opportunities.

Jill and I continue to work together for the Lord in our own church and at the Well Christian Healing Centre. Our daughter Carol, Andy and our grandsons, Thomas and Matthew may well be visiting the UK for Christmas and we look forward to seeing them again. It was great to work with my son Chris who led a student team on a mission to the Mount Merrion Estate in East Belfast in May. There was lots of street work with surveys, schools work, and detached work with young people and servant evangelism including a car wash. Paul Woodman the escapologist joined us for the latter part of the week when there were some large turnouts with over 100 at the family fun night, 50 at the pub quiz and another 100 plus at the after school club and BBQ. This resulted in 50 responses to the Gospel. It must be a bit of a record when the son preached on the first Sunday followed by his father the next Sunday !!

There has been much interest in the past for me to share some of the experiences and knowledge that I've gathered in these past 40 years of evangelism, as well as the ecstasy and the agony of being a soul-winner. So when I floated the notion of this talk a few weeks ago, there was an enthusiastic take-up. To gain the most from the topics covered, please consider praying & fasting before you come. I look forward very much to seeing a group of you there.

Mission matters. As a receiver of this newsletter, it's The unholy trinity of sin, the world and the unlikely you need much persuading of that. throughout the UK on this wavelength. Many church leaders we're meeting in preparation for 'Walk National Forest' are juggling the demands coming from the three or more congregations they look after. The relentless nature of Sunday services, approaching like an express train, is one pressure amongst others making it hard to plan for September, let alone beyond that.
