JUNIOR CUP Round 5
TAYPORT v GLENAFTON ATHLETIC
It 's the tie of the round according to most pundits and it' s doubtful if there are man y who would argue. As well as being a Super League East v a Super League West clash, there ' s the added 'romance of the Cup angle', with both the previous meetings, in 1992 and 1993, being massive affairs , games which will long live in the memory of both sets of fans. Glenafton visit The Canniepairt for the first time ever, only the fourth Ayrshire club to have graced the ground. Because of postponement s it's only Glens ' fourth game since the beginning of December , so the Ayrshire players will likely be fast out of the trap and ra r ing to go . . The relative inactivity has provided the opportunity for a number of injuries to be shaken off and, apart from Ricky Robb and Paul Deeney who are both cuptied, it should be a full strength side that Glens management team put out this afternoon. Having said that , the veteran ex Hearts and Scotland goalkeeper, Henry Smith, was press ganged back into action last Saturday in the 3-3 home draw with Larkhall after regular keeper was ruled out with a hernia problem. It remains to be seen whether or not the veteran Henry will don the keeper's gloves again today . Whoever is between the sticks is defending a proud record as 'Afton have yet to lose a goal in the Scottish Cup and haven't lost on the road since August , winning 7 away games on the bounce . Like Tayport, Glenafton lost their manager to the Seniors earlier this season when Gordon Dalziel moved from Loch Park to take up the challenge of managing Raith Rovers. The ex-Ayr, Partick and QOS player Davie Kennedy has a player/management role along with Andy Dunlop, another former Partick man. Win or lose, it will likely be striker Craig Flanagan's last gam e for the club, at least for this season. It's reported that Flanagan has signed a contract with Stenhousemuir, but there is an agreement that he won't move until after the Tayport game. Tayport have had to chop and change things in the last few games because of injury and suspension , but apart from the still injured Allan Ramsay, there should be a stronger pool from which manager Burgess can select. Duncan Bruce is likely to make way in goal for the fit again Frazer Fitzpatrick who missed the Fraserburgh game through injury. Steven Stewart returns after suspension while John Ward and Brian Livie, both missing last week through injury, have trained this week and should be fit to resume. John Knox misses out through being cupti ed

@Jlb(g~~ &7?m~nc~ Mention 'Glenafton' to a Junior football fan and it's pretty certain they'll make reference to 'Alan Rough'. Bringing in Roughie as manager in the early nineties, was a master piece of public relations by the New Cumnock club. The celebratory status of Alan Rough raised Glens profile , indeed the Junior game's profile, to a new level and launched the most successful period in the club's history, success which has been sustained since. Glenafton Athletic was founded in 1930, playing in a small Junior League in the mining area of south Ayrshire. Glenafton quickly collected their first league title and before long were playing in the bigger Western League. They lifted that title in 1935 but it was 1959 before that success was to be repeated. The following year Glenafton moved to a new ground, Loch Park, where Afton Water flows into the River Nith. There followed a period of success on the field including a first appearance in the final of the Scottish Junior Cup in which they went down 2-1 to Irvine Meadow before 21,000 at Hampden in 1963. After three successive league titles from 62 - 64 there was a fairly lean spell and it was to be the early 1980s before Glenafton were to make their mark again. The renaissance at Loch Park coincided with the emergence of Auchinleck Talbot as the major Junior force in the country. Glenafton's efforts were eclipsed by the then mighty Talbot and the New Cumnock side weren 't to get a taste of the action until the inspired move to bring Alan Rough on board in 1990. There followed three successive OVD Scottish Junior Cup Final appearances. There was an embarrassing 4-0 defeat by neighbours Auchinleck in 1992 then the following year it was a meeting with the 'unknown' Tayport FC. The 1-0 win over Tayport sparked _off 'incredible scenes of celebration ..... forever embedded in New Cumnock's history'. The wheels came off the Loch Park bandwagon as second division Largs pulled off a shock 1-0 win in the lbrox final the following year. Glenafton maintained their status as one of the top sides in the west and were worthy winners of the last ever Ayrshire League Championship in 2002. The inaugural West Super League title eluded them by three points, but they did claim the West of Scotland Cup for the first time in the club's illustriou s history. Last season it was a credible fifth spot and the club is currently on course for another top half finish.

Once again William Hill's produced a special coupon for this afternoon' s OVD Scottish Cup card. Hill's report that there has been a lot of money punted on the Junior game this season, with heavy betting in particular on Glenafton, Lochee and Pollok to win the Cup outright. Whilst Tayport have remained at l 0/ l, Lochee United have moved in from 12s to 7s and Pollok have moved in from 16s to 8s. Wm Hill's are actually looking for assistance to fix the odds for Junior games in the East. Anybody who has a good knowledge of the Junior game in the east is invited to contact the firm's Gilmour Street office in Paisley.

"NO TOB TOO BIG OR TOO SMALL for
.IHRSH AND SVLLI'f"AN"
Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the Canniepairt to both sets of supporters, for this afternoon 's OVD Scottish Cup tie .
Our opponents today come to Tayport with the tag of being one of the most attractive footballing sides in the wes t of Scotland, so hopefully, ~ ----- - - ~ with our own passing style, the supporters should be in for a soccer treat. Although - and their management would no doubt agree with me - it's the result that counts in the end, and to be in the quarter final draw is our aim today.
Since our last home game we have had two inter regional cup ties with mixed fortunes. The first being the uncharacteristi cally poor display against Elmwood in Dundee in which we missed some great opportunities to score, but failed miserably in front of goal. We lost a bad goal and , to be honest, could have lost another one to a side which was pumped up for the game. Unfortunately we didn't look in the mood and in the end the result was a fair one and best forgotten.
Last week at Fraserburgh was a total contrast to the week before , as we dominated the game from the start and, although once again we missed some great goalscoring opportunities, the half time score totally flattered our opponents . We only
had a Gareth Dailly strike to show for our dominance on a glue pot playing surface. The second half started in similar mode and, although the Broch upped their physical style a notch with some horrendous challenges being made all over the park, the ref's quote was, 'that's how we play the game up here, son!'
Two more goals followed, from Barry McNaughton and Robbie Henderson to seal our victory , with a hotly disputed late penalty giving the home side a little consolation. All this without the services of the injured John Ward , Frazer Fitzpatrick, Brian Livie and Allan Ramsay, with Steven Stew art unavailable through suspension. All in all, a satisfying outcome from a journey to one of Junior football ' s most northerly outposts.
Today's opponents Glenafton have a great tradition in the Junior Cup and, as I stated earlier, are a very good footballing side, as myself and Stewart Williamson know only too well because we were in charge of Glenrothes at the same stage of the tournament last year. We came from a goal down at Loch Park to win the match 2-1, but only after being outplayed for the first half hour, during which we could have been two or three goals down. Hopefully that experience will be an advantage to us today in our quest to collect the 'holy grail' which, as every junior fan knows , is the OVD Scottish Junior Cup.
With the large Tayport support behind us , I know we have a great chance of reaching the last eight , but we will have to be at our very best this afternoon to achieve the result we are all hoping for.
I hope you all enjoy the game,
cheers 9(.eJ.th. JJu.v.ub
Tayport's goalscoring hero of the last two seasons' OVD Cup competition, Brian Craik, has got off to a good start with his new club , Lochee Harp, scoring three times in his first two games.

OVD SCOTTISH JUNIOR CUP
It 's very much East v West with all six from the East Region being kept separate and paired with West Region opponents. Tayport v Glenafton is the game of the day and the key statistic for this game is the fact that the
New Cumnock side have yet to concede a goal in the competition . It should be a finely balanced tie, but elsewhere there are several clubs who will already have one eye on the last eight. Lochee United, for example . The Dundee team were given a shake last round by Lanark but will be well psyched up for this one and Neilston, despite hitting five last week against Kilbirnie , will struggle against the competition second favourites . Before last Saturday , one might have had a sneaking fancy for Hill of Beath at Pollok but the Haws capitulated at Linlithgow last week and the lack of top league opponents every other week will tell on the Fifers. Bathgate are at Maryhill and, although league form suggests the Glasgow side will carry the day, there is enough class in the Bathgate team to rise to the occasion and at least snatch a replay. Linlithgow fans will tell you that it's the form at the end of the season that matters and, although they almost slipped up v Penicuik the other week , recent results suggest that the Rose are coming into a bit of form. West Super League Premier side Renfrew, however, won't be intimidated by Prestonfield . Possibility of a shock here , perhaps? Dunbar United and Lugar Boswell Thistle are sailing in unchartered waters at present. Either was the draw the other teams wanted for round 5 and both will have been delighted to have been drawn together. Put your money on Lugar for a place in the quarters . Arthurlie may have had their side weakened by last week's red mist at Auchlinleck , but there should surely be enough in reserve to account for Thorniewood, despite the West District League side pulling off a surprise at struggling Arniston in the last round . Troon may be a division above Petershill but that does not give them the favourites tag, indeed the bookies can't separate them . Peasie will travel down to the seaside in confident mood but the locals will be lifted by the unique atmosphere which surrounds a Scottish Junior Cup tie, and the Glasgow side may well be disappointed . Check the Newsline (01382552755) later tonight for the results . Big Jock Myles is the official observer here today , so he ' ll keep us in touch with what's happening elsewhere in the country.

Cup football has dominated proceedings during the past few weeks, with Taypo11 enjoying mixed fortunes. The last home match , against Arbroath S.C. in the North End Challenge Cup was memorable solely fo1· John Knox's first goal in Tayport colours. The J-0 win, with Duncan Bruce keeping a clean-sheet , offered precious little in the way of entertainment.
Surely that would be rectified when 'Port made the short trip to Craigie Park, for their first ever fixture in the new, much-heralded KlA Cup . Yes, the game did prove to be incident-packed. Unfortunately, the result proved to be an unmitigated disaster for the Canniepairt men.
Several good chances were squandered, while, at the other end of the park, Elmwood carved out more openings than many more illusti;ous sides have managed against a normally formidable Tayport defence.
Their goal, scored by midfielder Craig Stevenson, was no less than 'Wood had deserved, given their whole-hearted approach, yet, with an hour remaining, most observers assumed that 'Port would eventually sa lvage the tie. It was not to be, as red cards, rather than goals, came Tayport's way. Another team's name, probably not Elmwood's , must be on the
KlACup. At least Tayport's name is on the Northriayside Cup, (unless any of the five different sponsors of the past fifteen years have provided separate trophies). Last weekend brought a long journey north, to Fraserburgh, for a match on an incredibly heavy surface, with progress in the Dugout Cup Tayport's reward for a determined display.
Many chances were spurned during persevered and led at the break, through the contest, Robbie Henderson and Barry a late penalty providing Fraserburgh's
the first half , but 'Port a Gareth Dailly goal. Late in McNaughton sealed victory, with consolation in a 3-1 reversal.
These cup encounters, notable also for injured absentees, have raised many questions. The likelihood is that they will all be answered
this afternoon.
TODAY'S MEETING IS A MILESTONE FOR BOTH CLUBS
This aft ernoon 's game is a milestone in the history of both Tayport and Glenafton . The club archivists recording the respective club histories will have th e names of Tayport and Glenafton intrinsically linked. The reason for this, of course. is that the high point of Glenafton's history, their only Scottish Junior Cup win, was at Tayport's expense, on 23 May 1993. For Tayport, it was the culmination of three fantastic first seasons in the Juniors. To be the first side from the Tayside League to appear in the Scottish Junior Cup Final for 64 years was an unbelievable achievement.
So, although Tayport lost out to Johnny Miller 's late goal at Firhill, the disappointment was tempered with a sense of achievement, with the team 's open top bus tour round the town going ahead anyway. That Sunday evening at opposite ends of the country - New Cumnock and Tayport - we had both teams touring their respective communities in open top buses celebrating their respective achievements. For Tayport, the ultimate celebration was three years off, and this was to be repeated seven years later .
1993 hadn 't been the first meeting of the teams. That occasion was a year earlier in a quarter final tie at New Cumnock when Tayport went down 3- 1 und er controversial circumstances. Those who were amongst a very big 'Port support that day will recall the happenings which saw Glens win 3-1. Tayport were handicapped by the early sending off of Hamish Mackay for an alleged 'professional foul' just over the half way line. It proved too great a handicap. Despite 'Port being well in contention until the closing minutes , when Glenafton grabbed a third to seal their semi-final place .
Although Glenafton have no survivors from these first meetings, In Tayport's squad this afternoon will be Grant Paterson and Dave Reilly, both of whom played prominent roles in both ties. Among our hospitality guests this afternoon are three of the other heroes of the first two meetings betw een the clubs, Paul Reilly , Mark Spalding and Jimmy Hunter.

8dia matters There 's been no shortage of controversy in the press since our last issue - and referees as usual are in the limelight. The Edinburgh Evening News reported (24/05) that the pitch at Hill of Beath for the OVD tie between Haws and Blackburn was frozen so lid in places yet the ground had-been deemed playable . The Refs opinion was furth er ca lled into question by the reporter who reckoned it was a controversial ordering off of a Blackburn player which paved the way for a home win . The E vening Telegraph (24/05) repo11ed that Refer ee Hornby had declared the groun d unpla yable at Laing Park , shortl y before kick-off , much to the annoyance of both teams who were quite happy to play. The Sun (24/05) had an even bener story. Beith ' s game at Hurlford was called off seconds before kick off becaus e referee Brawls - now there's a name for a refwasn' t happy with the line marking . Beith manager Dennis Gray was not a happy chappy, describin g t:he situation as farcical. Apparently the battery on the line marker was dead , so Hurlford had a go at marking it by hand but time overtook them.
Jim O ' Donnell reported in the Glasgow Evening Times ( 10/02) that Referee McKendr ick (see Snout) had made a pig's ear of compl eting an Arthurlie ordering off offence v Auchinleck and . as a result , the erring 'Lie player looked set to face Thorn iewood this afternoon whil st the case was under appeal. The Fif e Herald wasn 't impressed with Tayport's performance in the shock defeat by Elmwoo d in the East of Scotl and (KIA) Cup, passing up chances and being out fought by their hosts . The report er did concede that frustration had reached boiling point after the referee had turned down Tayport ' s appeal for a penalty after a hand ball which everyone in the ground saw. In previewing the Fraserburgh tie, it was noted that ' Port's 2005 performances , with the exception of the Beith tie, had not been up to scratch. The Cumnock Chronicle report ed that Craigmark Burntonians' manager Willie McMahon had hailed the decision by his ' keeper Stevie Douglas to knock back a signing approach from Glenafton who wanted him as a replacement for injured Gary Matthews. Glens boss Davi e Kennedy told the reporter that he was happy to turn to the experienced Henry Smith to help him out. The Courier ( I l /05) had John Knox missing today ' s game through suspension, but of course he misses out becau se he ' s cup-tied with his former club Glenrothes. The Fife Herald notes (11/05) that 'The Ca.nniepairt is the place to be for local football fans this weekend . . .... for what is sure to be an intriguing game of foot-ball' .
SNIFFING ABOUT WITH
THE SNOUT
Michad Feeney, the former Lochee United and North End centre half, is now resident in Cork in the Republic of lrel and, where he works for a fruit distributor. Michael tells Snout 's man in the Emera ld Isle that he was the best player never to have played for Taypon. Apparently Michael 's friends are so fed up with him telling them of his two caps for Junior Scotland, that he's now been dubbed ·Two Caps Feeney ' !
Apparently it was blood and snoners at Auchinleck last Saturday where Arthurli e were visitors for a West Super League match. Referee John McKendrick (who refereed Tayport 's match at Beith) and his officials were getting abso lute pelters on the www. Arthurlie had four reds cards, Auchinl eck one, two players were carted off to the Auchinleck DRI, and the match ended with " ... every player on the pitch fighting and both benches going mad ... ' . It ' s not over yet as Polic e are investigating an alleged assa ult on the referee. Talbot took the lead through a penalty in 89 minutes, Arthurlie thought they had equalised deep in stoppage time, but the goal was disallowed on the say so of an assistant after play had continued for some time. The Arthurlie guy on the www wants to know why, after the melee had been sorted out, Talbot's only punishment was a yellow card but three from 'Lie took a walk. One of those walking was Arthurlie Assistant Manager Johnny Miller, whom we think is the same JM who netted Glena:fton' s late winner v us in the 1993 OVD Final. The Arthurlie man on the www is worried that Miller will be panned by the beaks as he previously did a three month stretch for 'Laughin g at a match official in a sarcastic manner'.
The variety of registration forms which are necessary in Scottish football has long been the bane of club secretaries, particularly those in the Junior game. This has been acknow ledged by the SF A who sent their top man in the Registration Department at Hampden, Sandy Bryson , along to a meeting of the East Region the other evening to explain the SFA' s plans for streamlining the registration system. Basically it will mean a big reduction in the number of forms and Mr Bryson indicated that there were moves afoot to take the game zooming into the 2 1 st century by providing a facility whereby everything could be done 'o n-line '. This could be happening by the end of next season. A computer for the Canniepairt? [is that a groan from the treasur er I detect?]
Reconstruction is on the agenda again. Delegates have been asked to take proposals back to their clubs and submit comments by the end of March. One proposal is to bring all the East clubs together in one league i.e. do away with District leagues and have 5 divisions viz Super(12 clubs); Premier Div. I (12) ; Premier Div . 2 (12); Premier Div. 3 (14); & Premier Div . 4 ( 14). [Some wag pointed out that if a division is called Premier, then, by virtue of that name can 't there only be one premier division?] The other propo sal is to have a Super ( 12), a Premier I ( 12 clubs - all-in); Premier 2 (12 -all-in); Premier 3 (16 - Fife & Lothians only); Premier 4 (12 - former Tayside clubs only). In the latter proposal , there would be no automatic promotion from Divisions 3 & 4. However, the top two clubs in each division could make application to be promoted to Premier Division 2 at the end of the season. Only two of the four would be promoted to Premier Division 2. A panel comprising neutral SJFA officials would adjudicate on any application for promotion . If an application was successfu l, then the two bottom clubs in Premier Division 2 would be relegated to either Premier Division 3 or 4.
