Dear Friends & Mission partners, Here we are to share with you our Myanmar Mission News for the 1 st half of 2018 Celebrating the 10 th Anniversary of Formation of Educators Programme There was a double celebration on 27 April: the graduation ceremony of the 10 th batch of 22 Educators together with the 10 th Anniversary of the FED Programme. About 70 educators mainly from the 7 th , 8 th & 9 th batches came back to Canossa Home to join in the celebration. Canossian Sisters, Lay Canossians & volunteers came from Singapore for this happy occasion. The educators put up a fantastic programme of songs, dances and a musical entitled “Forever Friends”. Guest of Honour Mr. Stephen Heng from the Singapore Embassy in Myanmar presented the Educators with their Graduation Certificates. Our Provincial Leader, Sr. Christina Yeo presented Long Service Awards to 4 Educators who served for 10 years & 12 Educators who served for 5 to 8 years. Priests & Sisters of the local Church and Ms Lucrecia and some members of Episcopal Commission for Education also came to grace the occasion. There was a double celebration on 27 April: the graduation ceremony of the 10th batch of 22 Educators together with

the 10th Anniversary of the FED Programme. About 70 educators mainly from the 7th, 8th & 9th batches came back to

Canossa Home to join in the celebration. Canossian Sisters, Lay Canossians & volunteers came from Singapore for

News from Canossa Home

24 Jan: Visit of 11 Priests from the East district Parishes

27 April: Graduation of the 10th batch of Educators

24 May: Graduation of the 9th batch Intermediate Course

Volunteers & Visitors from

24 Jan: Visit of 11 Priests from the East district Parishes of Singapore 13-18 Feb: Selvathi conducted a Review of Discipline method and matching consequences for the 10th batch Educators. Her mother taught them some cooking skills. 3-7 March: Marie Kesavan shared the discovery method of learning with our Preschool teachers. 7-10 March: Project Micah volunteers guided the educators in Understanding self & affirming one another. 16-17 March: Wilson & Jill of the Papango Team came to guide the educators in the musical they were preparing to present at the 10th anniversary celebration. Jill also conducted her popular sewing and craft sessions. 27 April: Cynthia Pong & Kayne Cheong came for the 10th anniversary celebrations. Cynthia gave baking lessons to the FED Leaders. 28 April: Sr Janet shared on “The Canossian Family in the World”. Magdalene Tan, Louise Lee, Jaqueline Lim, Mary Mercy Teo (Lay Canossians from Singapore) & Julia (Lay Canossian of Myanmar) shared on how they live the Canossian Charism as lay persons. Present were the 8th, 9th & 10th batches of Educators. Leadership Training Course This year 42 Educators of the 8th batch (Advance Programme) & 9th batch (Intermediate Programme) came together for a month-long Leadership Training Course. A team of FED leaders assisted as facilitators of the 4 groups for group work. 30 April-4 May: Sr. Janet Wang conducted the 1st module of the Leadership Training course focusing on “Spiritual Leadership”. 7-11 May: Sr. Angela Ng conducted the 2nd module on “Inspirational Leadership”. 13-17 May: Vivien Lee conducted the 3rd module of the Leadership Training Course on “Responsible Leadership”. 22-25 May: K Chandran conducted the 4th module on “The 3Rs of Leadership”. The educators learned a lot from this Course and will have the opportunity to put the skills they have learnt into practice.

News from Canossian Formation House Myanmar

5-13 Jan: Srs Magdalene Ee and Priscilla Ahin

paid a visit to Canossian Formation House,

Myanmar.

25 Jan: Priests from Singapore East District

parishes visited Myanmar. Sr Jacq was there to

welcome them. Later, Frs Johnson, Damian,

Bruno and Don visited the new CFHM.

9 April: Installation of Blessed Sacrament at the

Canossian Formation House Myanmar by Fr

Marcian Htet Kyaw, the Parish priest of Epiphany

Church, after the Eucharistic celebration.

26 April : Srs Christina Yeo and Louisa Lim paid

their first visit as Provincial Leader & Councillor

to the Myanmar Mission.

20-23 April: La Salle Sisters’ Congregational

Leader, M. MaryAnn Sunantha and Formator,

Sr Catherine Sommai visited CFHM in view of

the Canossian-La Salle Joint Novitiate Formation

8 May: Sr Marion shared her Vocation Story with

the Educators gathered for the Training

Programme in Canossa Home, Thanlyin. One of

the Educators responded to the sharing by taking

the step to discern God’s call in her life with the

Canossian Sisters.

19 June-3 July: Sr Jacq attended the Canossian

International Seminar on Evangelization held in

Hong Kong. As part of the seminar, the

participants also had a Learning Journey of 4 days

to Wuhan to re-trace the footsteps of our

Canossian Missionaries in China.

3-5 July: there was the Inter-congregation

Formators’ Gathering; 45 participants met to

share information and formation.

11 July: Arrival of La Salle Sisters pre-novices, Clare

and Elizabeth to CFHM. They were accompanied by

their formator, Sr Catherine Sommai.

14 July: Lay Canossian Bi-monthly meeting.

VOLUNTEERS IN ACTION!

Project Micah’s team of 18 volunteers were at Canossa Home 7 - 10 March 2018. Activities for the FED girls & children included: toss a ball and state a positive affirmation for themselves and for another, cooking lessons for different egg dishes, rendang chicken, chap chye & chicken sou (all ingredients were available locally), creating stories with random words and sharing their stories, to think outside of the box especially for the 9-13 year-olds. We conducted games and reading sessions for the little ones. All the activities/games were meant to build team spirit and better bonding. The Team also went to visit 5 other homes in Taunggyi: JB Gobbato, Holy Cross Home, St Paul’s Home, St Anne’s Home and St Joseph’s Home where the Educators were serving. (Lilian Ng)

6-18 March 2018: Papango Team with Colin, Lawrence, Jonathan, Priscilla, Jill, Magdelene, Melanie & Wendy, led by Wilson Wong, returned for the 5th consecutive year to conduct summer camps for 440 children in Loikaw: 150 in Dorukhu & 290 in Doungankha, assisted by Canossian Educators Immaculata, Maricelin, Edwese, Rosemary, Justa, Bernadetta, Elizabeth, Margaret & Louisa. 2 Loikaw teachers Anthony & Dennis & 6 seminarians in Doungankha: Lawrence, Francis, Steven, Henry, Sutiro & Joseph, joined the team. The Loikaw state government sponsored food & red caps & T-shirts for the children. All participated enthusiastically in the sports, science, art & craft, drama, music, nutrition & healthcare programmes our team prepared for them. Tournament Day was held in Doungankha with volleyball, cane ball, mini tennis, badminton/lacrosse, captain’s ball, face painting & archery. It was a great success! Fr. Philip arranged for the team to visit the Loikaw Sports Academy in Loikaw. Melanie & Wendy donated some sports gear to the Academy & initiated exchanges with our Singapore contacts.

Dr Lawrence conducted the pop-in clinics & treated 82 cases in the 2 villages of Donokhu & Dorokhu.

Wilson & Jill then proceeded to Canossa Home, Thanlyin to prepare the Educators for the 10th anniversary

celebration with a musical sketch: “Forever Friends – An FED Story”. Jill also conducted her popular sewing & craft

sessions with the educators.

4-6 April: Sr. Angela & Hazel were invited to participate in the Canossian Girls’ Leadership Symposium

“Be Empowered” in St. Anthony’s Canossian Primary School in Singapore. Participants were from

Canossian Schools in Singapore, India & the Philippines. Guest of Honour President Halimah Yacob graced

the occasion. Sr. Angela was invited to give the keynote address on “Leadership & Mission” & Hazel shared

on how she became a confident leader as a Canossian Educator in Myanmar.

Happenings @ Gate of Hope 11 Jan & 12 March: The new Ambassodor of Singapore in Myanmar, Ms Vanessa Chan & her staff visited Gate of Hope twice. During their 2nd visit while they were on a staff retreat they had lunch (Mohinga & Rice Salad)

at our place. They also visited Brother Felice Boarding House next door & donated food for the children.

8-9 Feb. Volunteer Ms Lim Guat Ha taught English & baking cookies to the 2nd batch of Gate of Hope Trainees

4 - 6 April: Simon Soh gave a Course on “Introduction to Hospitality Industry” to the second batch of 19 trainees.

Mary Si` & Marian Bibiana from the 1st batch of Graduates from “Gate of Hope”, were sent to

further their training at the Singapore Myanmar Vocational Training Institute in Yangon. Both of

them did very well. On 1 June 2018 Mary Si from the 6th batch of

Educators, graduated in Housekeeping and is assisting Lucia in training the 2nd batch of trainees at Gate of Hope. Both also work periodically with their SMVTI

teacher as trainers in hotels in Mandalay and Lashio. Marian Bibiana graduated in “Front Office” & is

working in a Hotel in Naung Shwe.
