John SimpsonIt is with sadness that I write this tributeto my friend and colleague, JohnSimpson. During my decade as Chairmanof Stonesfield Parish Council, John wasVice Chairman for the majority of thetime. He was elected Chairman himselfon my retirement. In that role heexhibited all the qualities possessed bythe best leaders.

John always had the interests of thevillage as the basis for his actions, decisions and advice. As Chair of theCouncil, he was eminently approachablewhilst remaining true to his beliefs andconvictions. He had been a part of thefabric of Stonesfield for well over fortyyears, playing leading parts in the schoolPTA and as a governor of the SpendloveSecondary School in Charlbury until itsclosure in 1982. He was an enthusiastic

and eagle-eyed domino player at boththe Black Head and the Sports & Socialclub alongside Derrick Millard and JimO’Brien.

When John resigned the Chair of theCouncil, the village lost a man of greatintegrity and public spirit – a man onecould trust implicitly and take as a rolemodel. Our thoughts and prayers arewith Maria and Russell and Simon.

John Simpson will be remembered withaffection, respect and friendship by allwhose paths he crossed and who walkedawhile with him down the road of life.

Keith Prickett (1939–2016)After a very short illness with pancreaticcancer Keith passed away in November.

Keith and Jill moved to Stonesfield in2002 to live closer to some of hisgrandchildren. He had fourteen veryhappy years here, enjoying theindependence that the village and hiselectric wheelchair gave him – watchingcricket and football games, becoming afamiliar and popular face at Lunch Cluband St James’s Church and quicklymaking many friends with his engagingmanner.

Keith’s early life was spent in the EastEnd of London until his family hometook a direct hit in the Blitz and thefamily moved to Essex. After school andNarional Service he joined the FordMotor Company, married Jill and had

Just a quick note to say a heartfelt thankyou to the very kind gentleman whostayed with me recently while myhusband went to fetch our car, after I wastaken ill suddenly at the Woodstock Roadallotments at the end of October. Yourassistance and cheery banter were verymuch appreciated. I’m sorry I didn’t askyour name to thank you properly.

Baggs Bottom & Stockey WoodsIn the October Slate I reported that OCChad agreed that the people of Stonesfieldand Combe who’d supplied evidenceforms saying they had walked BaggsBottom and the path along the Evenlodehad a case to have these paths madepublic rights of way. At the time Icautioned that there was a right of appealso the decision wasn’t final. I’m verypleased to let everyone know that noappeals have been made and that OCCwill be making an order to change theDefinitive Footpath Map. It will take alittle time before the paths are clearedand stiles/kissing gates are put in place.

Richard Morris

The application to register StockeyWoods as a Village Green has been

delivered to Oxfordshirew CountyCouncil. I was told we should get adecision within two or three years. Manythanks to all the people who distributedand filled in evidence questionnaires.

Help with Monday Coffee – 9amThe Monday Coffee team at St James’Centre need more volunteers to helpwith serving our first-class coffee, teasand biscuits ‘first thing’ on Mondays, around 9am in school term-time. We’rethere for people to drop in for a chat anda boost for the start of the week.

It’s a real pleasure to serve each person –not just because it’s welcomed byeveryone (and it’s all free of charge – partof St James’s Church natural hospitalityfor the village) but for the servers it’s away of keeping up with the newgenerations of mums and dads, dogwalkers and passers-by who are glad of acup and a pause. Now we need to expandthe team. It usually means being at theCentre at around 8.30am to help set upand helping serve till around 10am,when the later ‘Cuppa’ volunteers takeover.

Why not come anyway as a ‘Customer’ ateither the early time Monday Coffee orthe Cuppa? Try us out and have a chatwith one of us.

three children. He worked his waythrough Ford, becoming the youngestdirector ever when he was just 35. Inbetween work and his family Keith was atalented and competitive sportsman.

In 1987 Keith’s life took a dramatic turnwhen he suffered a stroke at just 48.Despite everything that he faced healways looked on the bright side and setabout getting as much out of life as hecould. He walked both his daughtersdown the aisle at their weddings andwith Jill and his trusty wheelchair hetravelled the world. He welcomed hisseven grandchildren into the world withcharacteristic love and laughter.

Keith’s passing is a great loss to us all andhe will be remembered for many thingsby many people but every one of us willremember his smile. Our whole familyhas been overwhelmed by the love andsupport we have received from thecommunity and the kindness andcompassion shown to Keith by the staffat the JR, the District Nurses and thecarer team who helped us in his last fewdays – for this we will always be grateful. He faced his last few days with histrademark courage, humility and goodhumour and we are comforted to knowthat he is now at peace.

With Kathleen Albért, Sylvia ran theChurchfields Nursery for many years inthe Methodist Schoolroom.

Our thoughts are with her husband, Dan,who has been very ill for six yearsfolowing a severe stroke, and Nick andChris.

They fought in the sun,They fought in the rain,They experienced sorrow,They experienced pain.

They fought to victoryBut suffered great losses.Today they’re rememberedWith poppies and crosses

Day after dayPilots took their flightDay after daySoldiers feared the bullet’s might.

Thanks to themYou will surviveAnd thanks to RemembranceThey are still alive.

available to graze the common. The areais safe, fully enclosed and would benefitfrom grazing to keep vegetation down. Please contact the clerk if interested indiscussing this further.

Grass cutting: Councillors signed acontract with OCC to take overresponsibility for grass cutting in theparish next year. Currently OCC cut theirareas once a year. The Council intends todo this around four times a year, largelyfunded by a grant from OCC. This is agood example of responsibility beingdelegated to a local level.

Parish website: Councillors ask localgroups to have a look at the parishwebsite www.stonesfield.info and check ifthe information about their club is up todate. Some of the information shown isnow quite old; in one case theinformation relates to 2011. We also askif there is anyone locally who would liketo take on the technical side of runningthe site. Please contact the Clerk ifinterested.

District UpdateThe thoughts and energies of members ofthe District Council this month haverested upon the final polish to theemerging Local Plan. This is now out forpublic consultation until 23 Decemberprior to its submission to theInspectorate. (Anyone wishing to takepart in the consultation can obtain aform online atwww.westoxon.gov.uk/localplan2031 orby calling the Planning Policy Team on01993 861667.) The various sites offeredby landowners have been considered andsome have been incorporated for detailed

consideration when applications todevelop are submitted. There are twosites in Stonesfield under activeconsideration – one off the WoodstockRoad opposite to the Charity Farm sitealready under construction, and anotherto the west of North Farm. Neither ofthese is yet accepted. In Combe two siteshave been identified, offered byBlenheim, but, as yet, no decision hasbeen taken.

Regarding the Local Plan in general, thelargest bone of contention lies with thesite entitled Witney North. This projectedsite will spread development towardsHailey, Poffley End and adjacent hamlets.Several Councillors are concerned, not tosay uncomfortable, with this site, butwere persuaded that the need to have anauthorised Local Plan was imperative andmust take precedence over individualdetails which would, anyway, come upfor further discussion and possibleamendment at a later date. Onceaccepted, the Local Plan will give theDistrict Council far greater powers toinfluence development throughout thearea. Each application, when received, will attract individual scrutiny basedsolely upon the merits or otherwise ofthe proposal. The overriding fact is thatthere is considerable need for houses inour district, especially affordable units. Each development, apart from very smallapplications, will have to incorporate an‘affordable’ element.

We live in interesting times! Don’thesitate to contact me, if you think I canhelp.

New Housing DevelopmentI am writing because, as some of youmay know, West Oxfordshire DistrictCouncil have published the latestversion of the Draft Local Plan. Inaddition to the 50 new houses alreadybeing built in the village, the planoutlines permission for at least another50 on the Woodstock Road. There is alsoreason to believe that another 30 or 40are planned on Blenheim land on TheRidings.

Whilst it is clear that there is a need forhousing, Stonesfield seems to be beingtargeted for proportionally more thanother villages in the Burford/Charlburysub-area. This number of new builds inour community is disproportionate andlikely to intrinsically change the natureof the village.

The council is inviting comments on theplan, which must be submitted by Friday23 December. They can be made online athttp://www.westoxon.gov.uk/localplan2031 or by post to Planning PolicyTeam,West Oxfordshire District Council,Elmfield, New Yatt Road, Witney,OX281PB

From your NeighbourhoodPolicing TeamSpeeding: During the last few months wehave carried out a number of speedenforcement checks in the village.Although most motorists are adhering tothe speed limit, too many drivers risk afine or points on their license (thoughyou may be offered the option ofattending a Speed Awareness Course ifeligible). The speed limit is 30mph allthrough the village, no matter what timeof day or night, or whatever the weatherconditions. Sadly, the drivers caughtspeeding recently are mostly localresidents.

Parking: We have also received a numberof complaints aboutinappropriate/inconsiderate streetparking in Stonesfield. To clarify: it is notan offence to park outside someone’shouse if you are not resident there. However, it IS an offence to parkblocking a dropped kerb – this will beclassed as obstruction. We don’t have aproblem with vehicles parking slightly onthe pavement, as long as it’s not causingan obstruction to pedestrians. Pleaseconsider others when parking yourvehicle on the street.

SeptembeerfestSeeing the photo of the Village Idiotsplaying at the Septembeerfest on thecover of last month’s Slate reminded meof what a fabulous event it was and howmuch I had enjoyed being involved, albeit in a very, very small way.

By the time I got to the playing field onthe morning of 24 September a miracleseemed to have happened – Stonesfield’sown little festival had arrived overnightand everyone was busily putting on thelast touches. I hurried off to getinstructions for what seemed to me to bean embarrassingly small job – all I had todo was make sure the bands got theirbeer tickets . . .

Despite a cloudy start, the sun won theday. Children rushed excitedly aroundand peeped into their entertainmenttent, while families sat chatting on thestraw bales around which the tents weregathered. We were spoilt for choice! Wasit to be the beer tent that drew you(chaps chatting and an amazing choice ofales), or the truly sumptuous champagnetent (you could loll on cushions withyour friends and sip the bubbly)? Or the

tea tent, a quiet cup of tea and animpossible choice of cakes??

Soon the bands were arriving, the musicbegan, and I was in action dishing outglasses and drink tokens to the bandmembers, who seemed very anxiousindeed to find me – the beer lady!!Suddenly I too felt a very tiny part of thiswonderful team, who worked so hardboth on the day and in the monthsbefore to make the Septembeerfest theamazing success that it was. They createda great village event, and in the processraised a huge sum for good causes. Thankyou, to you all.

A very big thanks must also go to thefantastic bands who gave their time andentertained us free of charge frommidday to midnight – from the soft folkysounds of Henderson/Hooper in theafternoon to the rioutous partyatmosphere created by the Village Idiotsat the end of the evening, and manymore in between.

I loved it all – here’s to the nextSeptembeerfest!!

Stonesfield Football ClubEvery now and then I give pride of placeto our Reserves and report their resultsfirst. Sometimes it’s just out of sheer andutter boredom, other times it’s just tochange things around but this time it istotally justified. What a season our boysare having and at the time of writingthey remain unbeaten! Having said that, they started the month with a difficultmatch against Milton and ‘if you knowyour history’ you’ll know they alwaysmake things difficult. This time was noexception as both teams fought out atough 2–2 draw. So, with a minorblemish on their league record, howwould our boys respond? In the best waypossible, is the answer: they travelled toAscott and won 4–2, then kept the goodform going with successive home winsagainst Kingham (4–0) and Chadlington(3–0). They are currently three points offtop spot in Div 4 with two games inhand. Let’s whisper it quietly, confidenceis high and anything is possible!

The Firsts continue to struggle in theleague following a draw (1–1) atCarterton and a frustrating home loss(5–2) to Bampton. It’s difficult topinpoint why they are struggling sobadly at the moment: clearly missing theinfluence of young Michael Phipps at theback and the lack of a potent goal-threatup front isn’t helping matters. With theleague looking more like a distant dream, success in one of the cups is probably thebest they can hope for this season. Mind

you, it won’t be in the Junior Shield: theytravelled to Corinthians (a mediocre mid-table Div 3 team) as odds-on favourites, with no one expecting a shock result. That’s exactly what we got: a 2–1 defeatsaw our boys make a sad exit. Theyhoped to make amends for that disasterin the replay of their 2nd round tie inthe Fred Ford Cup at Tower Hill Stars. Ina ding-dong battle our boys held theirnerve and emerged victorious with a 3–2win. A degree of pride salvaged and atleast the dream of cup glory in 2017 isstill alive!

The reader would be forgiven forassuming that this month’s Fredo Awardwould go to one of our Reserves andyou’d be correct. A no-brainer this monthand it goes to an ‘old head’ playing hisfirst season in a Stonesfield jersey. He’smade himself a must-pick with somecalm, assured performances and has alsoweighed in with a few goals along theway. Rumours abound that his strip neverneeds washed as he’s yet to sweat in it.Keith Laird, welcome to our football club, making it your own and keeping thelaundry bill down, the coveted Fredo isyours!

As this is the final Slate of 2016, let metake this early opportunity, on behalf ofthe football club, to wish everyoneassociated with our wonderful village avery happy Christmas and every successfor the coming New Year.

From your Parish PriestWaiting is not an act I like much. I guess,as for most people, when I decide that acourse of action should be accomplishedI would much rather see the result.

Advent is called Advent because it meansa time of waiting. When I take assembliesin our two schools I am often told by thechildren that ‘I just cannot wait forChristmas.’ For them waiting seems to goon for ever, particularly when the shopsstart to advertise Christmas somewherein October or even earlier!

So how are you adjusting to the secondgreat political upheaval of the year? Forsome it is a time of delight and for othersone of dismay. For some they cannotwait to see what will happen and want toget on with it; for some there is analmighty dread and a want to delay theoutcome at all costs. Of course it has tobe said that the Almighty doesn’t haveany dread at all. I am reliably informed

that he knows the beginning from theend so nothing takes him by surprise; Iam so pleased about that.

Although there will be deeper and wiseranalysis of these events, one obviouscommon feature of the Brexit referendumand the US presidential election is thatthey were not so much won by thewinners as lost by the losers. Were theyperhaps just fundamentally protest votes? An assertive anti-establishment protest bythose who feel hard done by againstthose in power who they holdresponsible for their plight? For we Brits Ibelieve that the EU has a lot to answerfor and the UK should not be ostracisedbecause of Brussel’s failure to reach out tothe people who need hope putting backin their lives.

Let this be a lesson to all who would seekto govern. Democracy is alive and welland making its voice heard at the ballotbox! Be careful to care for those who arein your care.

A second point is worth pondering. Bothevents have arisen because of theperception of a remote, uncaring elitemanaging the affairs of a nation for thebenefit of themselves. Yes, there is angerand fear in these votes, but there is alsogenuine pain. It is widely felt that thesufferings of the economic disaster of2008 were not borne fairly anduniversally; that globalisation, privatisation and any number of otherforces have been allowed to crush littlepeople under the heel of the powerful.

It is sometimes said that a nation gets thegovernment it deserves. That may be so,but history declares loudly that unlessthere is a strong voice speaking out forwhat is good, right, just andcompassionate, those virtues are all too

easily pushed to one side. These eventsshould be a great challenge to allChristians: a clarion call for all to beinvolved in the rule of our countries inthe widest, deepest and best sense.‘Politics is too serious a business to be leftjust to politicians.’

Let me leave you with a final concludingthought. Remind yourself of this: theChristian faith is alive and flourishing, but where is Caesar and the Empire ofRome now? Have a great Christmas and Ihope to see you at our many events inand outside of the church building.Come and enjoy the Christmas that Godalways intended for you to have.

And of course D.F.T.W.

Rev Roy

Money Collections at ChristmasServicesThere will be an opportunity at the CarolService on Sunday 18 December todonate to The Porch, a charity helpingthe homeless in Oxford.

At the Crib Service, children often like toplace a gift under the Christmas tree. Wewould be grateful if this could be a gift ofmoney for the Children’s Society, insteadof a toy. It would be fun if childrenwrapped up a parcel of money to looklike a present! Thank you.

Stonesfield Methodist ChurchMinister’s NewsletterI’ve realised that queuing for things isjust a part of life now, whether it’s inthe car going to work, at the post officecounter or just for a coffee in a popularplace. Waiting isn’t easy. Unless youhave a very patient disposition, it’s hardto do! I suppose there are lots of reasonsfor it too. There are a lot more cars onthe road, there are more people andcertain things have become a lot morepopular or fashionable.

Whatever the reason, times havechanged and things will never stay thesame.

The Church has the challenge of beingrelevant in these times but one thing wecan’t change is the message and asChristmas time comes upon us shortly,it’s good to remind ourselves of it. Andthat message is also . . . guess what?About waiting too!

As you receive this letter, we will beentering into the time before Christmascalled Advent. No prizes for knowing

what this means. It’s a waiting time as weprepare for Christmas and the celebrationof the birth of Jesus, the light of theworld.

Advent, of course, is not Christmas, eventhough the commercial world keepstelling us that. We understand why thatis so though!

Added to this, the themes of Advent canactually be quite difficult. Listencarefully to all the services and Biblereadings you will hear right up untilChristmas Day and you will see what Imean. They contain strange images ofjudgement and hope that can be hardand unattractive to understand. Theycontain images of ‘the last times’, God’sfinal purposes, hell, heaven, death, thecoming of Christ, past, present andfuture. This means that we often justwant to think about the event of Jesusin the manger, all soft and cuddly, asmany of our carols give us as an image.

But take some time in the run up toChristmas to meditate and considerGod’s word to you through thesereadings, struggle with them, let themchallenge you and see what they tell you.

Advent is a time when we arechallenged by the Bible readings not tobe conformed to the world as it is, butto be part of the transformation which isthe work of God. The Christian faithaffirms that God’s salvation is already atwork in history, particularly in Jesus. Weare called to live out that hope now, inthe light of God’s coming.

So, next time you are waiting andperhaps getting impatient, you might askyourself, for whom or for what are youwaiting?

The Roman Catholic Community inStonesfield wishes everyone a peaceful andjoyous Christmas

New Church thoughtThree things have filled my thoughts inrecent weeks: the US presidentialelection; Remembrance Day; theapproaching Christmas season. For eachof them, I recall two quotes from NewChurch teachings – if seeking true peaceof mind, we really must trust that theLord God is in charge, and that He has along (eternal) view of all our humanfumblings and will ensure that ‘it will beall right in the end.’

Peace has in it confidence in the Lord, thatHe directs all things, and provides all things, and that He leads to a good end.

Those are in the stream of Providence whoput their trust in the Lord.

Secrets of heaven.

Roman Catholic WorshipPrayerIf you believe, you will receive whatever youask for in prayer. (Matthew 23:1)

The New Testament is full of prayershowing us that Jesus prayed frequently.Jesus taught us what to pray with theLord’s Prayer (Matt 6:9-13; Luke 11:2-4);Jesus offers prayers of thanks and praiseto His Father (Matt 11:25-27; Luke 10:21–24) and upon calling Lazarus out ofthe tomb, Jesus thanks the Father forhearing him (John 11:41-42). After theLast Supper Jesus offers his great prayer ofboth submission, acceptance of hiscoming crucifixion to His Father but alsoof reassurance to his disciples.(John 17:1-26). Again at Gethsemane, Jesus praysto accept God’s will (Matt 26:36-44; Mark14:32-39; Luke 22:41-46; cf. John 18:11).Finally, as he was hanging on the cross,Jesus prays Psalm 22 (Matt 27:46; Mark15:34), asks God to forgive thosecrucifying him (Luke 23:34), and entrustshis Spirit to the Father (Luke 23:46; cf.John 19:30).

Jesus was praying all the time forhumanity, our salvation, and for God’smercy upon us. He was showing us thatprayer has many purposes and is one ofour main methods of connecting directlyto God. He was providing us with a model(as he so often did in the Gospels) of howto lead lives that bring us closer to God.

With Christmas coming, many of ourprayers will be full of our concerns, hopes, worries and wishes for particulargifts. However, we could also pray forthose other Christmas blessings, such asgenerosity, open-heartedness and peace. So what will you pray for this Christmas?
