CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS IN SUMMARY
4th International Conference on Alternative Energy, focused on “Alternative Energies in Pakistan – Opportunities & Challenges”, was a premier event for Executives in the energy industry providing them an opportunity to network with peers one-on-one. The conference program was a rich mix of provoking sessions. The conference schedule included three main sessions broadly focused on following themes: Policy & Investment in Renewable Energies and Emerging Technologies.
The conference was formally inaugurated by Mr. Raza Haroon, Minister of IT &Telecom, Government of Sindh as the Honorable Chief Guest and Mr. Arif Alauddin, CEO, Alternative Energy Development Board as the Session Chairperson. The 2010 keynote speaker was Mr. Robert Gibson, British Deputy High Commissioner, and Director of UKTI Pakistan.
The first Technical Session, focused on Policy & Investment in Renewable Energies, was graced by the presence of Mr. Rafique Dawood, Chairman & Director, Dawood Power (Pvt.) Ltd. as the Chairperson. Mr. Imran Ahmed, Director REP, AEDB was delivered the opening presentation and highlighting the medium term policies for Alternative & Renewable Energies along with giving particular consideration to the rural energy services policies too. Representing Siemens Pakistan, Engr. Irfan Ahmed, Head of Renewable Energy Department, delivered the presentation on Grid Interconnection Solutions for Wind Power Projects. Dr. Parvaiz Naim, Country Advisor, German Development Bank KfW, presented the four different future scenarios for energy concluding that the distant future is self-contained and self-sustained Home Power Units. Mr. Nadeem Haque, Energy Potential Inc, Masood Ahmed, SZABIST etc were among the other prominent speakers of the session. The presentations ended up with an interactive panel discussion where the Guest participated enthusiastically, sharing their insights and experience.
The second session, focused on Emerging Technologies, was honored by Mr. Ghulam Rasool Ahpan, Chairman - SEC, as the Session Chairperson and Mr. S. Nawaid Anjum Zaidi, DGM Alternate Energy, Pakistan State Oil as the Session Co-Chairperson. The presentations were reopened by Mr. Robert David Orr, CEO, Landhi Fertilizers &Biogas Company, who discussed the largest Geothermal Electricity Technology – LTG introduced in Pakistan, succeeded by Mr. Waqas Bin Najeeb, O&L Manager Pakistan, South Pole Carbon Asset Management Ltd., who presented on Introduction to carbon financing mechanisms for renewable energy technologies. Delivering the closing
presentation on Wind Energy for Socio-Economic Uplift of Remote and Poverty Stricken Areas, Mr. Tony Woods, concluded that First connect the village, then connect the villages together…and eventually to the Pakistan National Grid. The session ended up on the interactive discussion between the speakers & participants.
Overall, the ICAEP networking platform paved the way for the stakeholders of Alternative Energy & Power to interact & step ahead for practical implementations & developed AE Industry
