April 1, 2008 marked the 5th anniversary of The Universityof Foundation - and what an extraordinary period it hasbeen. From start-up through launch of the largest fundraisingcampaign in the University’s history, we have been privilegedto experience the commitment and generosity of faculty, staff, government, alumni, and friends who deeply value allthat the University and its Collegiate have to offer.

This historic year has been remarkable for the University, which celebrated its 40th anniversary, and the Foundation, which announced the launch of its ‘A World of Opportunity’Capital Campaign. Our University and Collegiate hostednumerous events and engaged the public throughout the year.

Our University saw progress on exciting capital projectsincluding the Portage Commons, Convocation Hall, andDuckworth Centre expansion. Work continues on theCanwest Centre for Theatre and Film, and construction willsoon begin on the new Furby campus – future home of theRichardson College for the Environment and the ScienceComplex, student housing, childcare, and more.

Among the great legacies of a capital campaign is growthin endowment funds, which are designated pools of capitalreserved in perpetuity. The Foundation holds these fundsin trust and invests the capital to provide a continuousstream of income from which payments to awards andprograms are then made in accordance with each fund’spurpose. This year alone, 32 new endowment funds wereopened.

At the end the 2007-2008 fiscal year, the value of endowmentfunds held by the Foundation reached $32.76 million(market), showing an increase of 57% over their value of$21 million (market) on April 1, 2004, at the time of transferto the Foundation.

Over the past four years, $3.78 million in total has beendisbursed by the Foundation to the University fromendowment revenues, supporting scholarships, bursaries, prizes and programs at UWinnipeg and The Collegiate. When unrestricted capital and current program gifts areincluded, the value of disbursements to the Universityexceeds $12.6 million for this period.

John A. Bulman hosted the event.

The garden is situated on the University’s new PortageCommons, in front of Wesley Hall. A bronze plaque, unveiledat the Dedication, has been mounted on the garden wallto serve as a reminder of the generous legacy gifts thatfacilitate many bursaries, scholarships, and programs.

The commitment of our Legacy Circle Members, in planningnow to create legacies for the future, sets a wonderfulexample of how alumni and friends can support TheUniversity of Winnipeg and its Collegiate.
