Military engineers to playroles in building modernTatmadaw

2 THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Saturday, 19 December, 2009

The graduation parade of the 12th Intakeof Defence Services Technological Academy tookplace at the parade ground of the academy inPyinOoLwin the other day, with an address byCommander-in-Chief of Defence ServicesSenior General Than Shwe.

In his speech, the Senior General said, “Iwould say with all seriousness that you must bewell capable of staying in touch with not only theadvancements in the military science but alsomodern warfare, as well as applying them inaccordance with the objective conditions. And toshape the Myanmar Tatmadaw into a strong, efficient and modern one depends on the sense ofpatriotism, capability and hard work of youngergenerations of intellectuals and intelligentsia likeyou.”

The world has seen rapid advancements inthe science and technology. Modern wars arewaged with the use of science and technology.Sophisticated weapons and advanced warfareare now common in wars. Various types of to-day’s heavy weaponry can hit the targets withpinpoint accuracy, and so, enemies can be crashedwith minimum loss.

Today, the Tatmadaw is in the process ofbeing upgraded into a strong, capable and mod-ern patriotic force to be able to defend the moth-erland. The drive calls for further developmentof human resources. In this regard, the DefenceServices Technological Academy is one of thesources. The 12th graduation of DSTA increasedthe number of military engineers.

Being engineers, the newly graduated jun-ior military officers have to do their bit in thenational defence and security duties, while dis-charging the major duties of building a modernTatmadaw. Simultaneously, they have to try tocatch up with the ever-advancing military sci-ence.

So, Tatmadaw junior engineer officersare duty-bound to meet the five fundamentalrequirements: moral conduct, self-discipline, loy-alty, team spirit, and being endowed with threecapabilities. In line with the motto “EngineeringProwess for Military Might”, they can be inperpetual service of the mother country by play-ing their role as reliable resources in building amodern Tatmadaw.

We favour peace and stabilityChit Naing (Psychology)

“I think it is a natural phenomenon that if anythingor anyone took a wrong place, then they would becomedirty. We should be well aware of how important it isto live in a right place.”

Saya Aung Thin(Shin-bayin-babe & the book on Shwepyikan

articles- P-60Former British Prime Minister Lord Paul Marston

once wrote: “Dirt is not dirt; it is a thing that is wronglyplaced.”

In this context, Saya Aung Thin said one feels sickwhen a hair is in one’s plate. If one’s hair cream is onhis face, he removes it as dirt. When one’s facialpowder is down on the mirror, he shakes it off. It isexplained in detail in the article titled ‘Hmatthade’.One must know his own place. One must be in his rightplace. If one stands firm in a wrong place, no benefitwill be reaped for him, for his surroundings as well asfor the whole world.

Welcome, if you show positive attitude. If you show negative attitude, then it will adversely

affect others. Why don’t you show positive attitude?Never too late.

“The blessing of a person goes together with thatof the human society. Only if peace and stability of thehuman society prevails, will a person enjoy a peacefullife. So everyone has a bounden duty to make theirenvironment and society peaceful.

Sayagyi Paragu(Japan Book, P-127)

A little frog can see the sky over the rim of its wellwith the limited diameter. The frog thinks the sky is toowide as much as it could see. When it reaches on thewell rim, it will see that the sky is far wider than it hasthought.

Without boundaries, a place is spacious. It is necessary not to stick to unacceptable

wants and demands. Retrospection is not necessarywhen impossible. Yesterday has gone. We have tolook straight at the present. Like or dislike, prevailing conditions can be seen right now. Thefuture can be shaped depending on the presentsituations. Pragmatism is important. We cannotbuild a castle in the air.

In the post-Cold War, a symbol emerged. It wasInternet Website. What is the indication of the Website?

Now is the age of cooperation by seeking commongoals rather than heated disagreement focusing ondifferent opinions. It is known to all that there havebeen instances of successes by using such a way ofthinking.

The more narrow-minded attitude one has, themore difficulty one will have to live. And thisconcept is concerned with everyone.

It is not possible for a person to sit on the fence if hesticks to destructive acts instead of participating inmaking the human society peaceful without discardinghis negative attitude when his desire is not met.

Why not one builds confidence? Honesty is requiredin building confidence. When one acts dishonestly, theother knows it. But such a dishonest act may be forgivenwith kindness and patience like parents’ showing loving-kindness towards their children. How much has thenation lost due to various hindrances and disturbances?Let bygones be bygones as the nation no longer wantsto remember the bitter experiences of the past.

Honesty is Sila (a good practice). There is nothing that does not emerge from practising

Sila. There is no other tool as strong as loving-kindness.The sweet smell of Sila can spread far beyond the

wall of the universe. The blessings of Sila are countless.Every race, every religion or every custom must

practise Sila. If one does not know how to value one’sculture and tradition, law and Sila, one will only sufferbecause of one’s own fault.

The dishonest act has been forgiven one or twotimes. But according to Dhamma, doing insincere actsagain and again is unacceptable. Only a person whorespects Dhamma will be protected by Dhamma.

If one wants to enjoy peace and tranquility, onewill have to take part in making one’s own nationand people peaceful. It is totally wrong for a personto think that he can prevent the nation frombecoming peaceful and prosperous. Anyone cannotblock people’s desire to see the nation develop inorder to keep abreast of the internationalcommunity. They have their ability to overcomeany difficulties.

I don’t want anyone suffering from evil consequenceof preventing the people’s strength. Doing everythingwith care and consideration is the best. I don’t hate anybeings. I don’t want to see harm to anyone.

If you help others, then you help yourself.Serving own interest at expense of others’ is driven

by a wrong concept. The dream of such a selfish personwill never come true. They are now dreaming of a newera. But how can they serve the interest of humansociety if they keep on centering their interest, showingtotal disregard for the opinion of others and expendingthe interest of the people?

“For the youth, receiving a legacy of educationalone is not enough. In that context, we have to nurtureand guide our children in order that they become uprightwith good moral conduct and a heart of gold.”

Saya Chit San Win“Good Legacy and Evil Legacy Book”, Page-117Our country lies between two Asian giants. Our

country stands 50th in order of size on the list of 200world countries. But, ours is not a very small country. The area of England or Japan, for example, is half ofour country’s. France and Germany are not as big asour country.

Due to our country’s vast area, it does not mattereven if the population reaches over 100 million.Myanmar’s population is extremely sparse if comparedwith that of the country with a population of over 1000million to the north, and the country with a populationof over 1000 million to the west of our country. Andour country’s military power is nothing if comparedwith their navies, air forces, and atomic bombs.Myanmar still exists due to being a brave people.

Our ancestors were capable enough to live on, asevidenced by the fact that they had made their home inthe nation for hundreds of years. Our country has seensigns of progress.

In his article featured in Tharapa Magazine, LuduSein Win said, “There is nothing like our motherland.”He also said that a person cannot automatically havea sense of patriotism by just claiming that he loveshis country. He will come to love his country only ifhe has known why his country deserves admirationand how his country should be loved. Otherwise, itis out of the question. By traveling around the nation,a citizen can know facts about his country and his ownpeople thoroughly. In that regard, making an around-the-nation trip works more beautifully to know thegeographical features and traditions of own peoplethan giving lip services.

If so, a citizen can have a first-hand experience ofhow much beautiful Myanmar’s geographical featuresare; how much Myanmar is rich in natural resources;and Myanmar people’s innate nature of being helpfuland big-hearted, he said.

Moreover, he said that he can know the extent ofthe difference between Myanmar culture and that ofthe cities in other countries.

He also stated that Myanmar people are ofconsiderable intellect by nature with high innovativepower. The youth of today in Myanmar are highlyintelligent, as well.

What we are working is not in the interest of thepeople at the age of 60 to 70 alone. The major duty isto lay foundations for development of the nation in theinterest of our posterity. We have made a lot ofsacrifices, showed forbearance, stuck to forget-and-forgive practice, and built national reconsolidation andensured non-disintegration of the Union at theunprecedented level in discharging national duties.

Visionary leaders of successive periods managedto guard the motherland against outside threats meantto harm the independence and sovereignty. Now, thenation has been unified far strongly than ever, and thenation will be handed over to future generations in linewith the State constitution in 2010.

We have yet to hand down the legacy of uprightnessand the legacy of good morality and magnanimity tothe youth. The people should stay away from plottingagainst others, entertaining rumours and hearsays, andchiding each other for small matters.

We should play an exemplary role in nurturing theyouth. It is time we drove out provocateurs disguisedas peacemakers, and work together to generate a betterfuture of our nation.

LONDON, 18 Dec—Briton SaraCampbell is on a mission to stretch thelimits of the human body — diving downinto the murky ocean depths for minutesat a time, on a single gulp of air.

Extreme depth freedivers swim downand back as far as possible, while cop-ing with pressure that crushes their lungsto the size of a lemon and would wrecktheir eardrums if they were not careful.

And the record-breaking Briton admit-ted it is tough. “Each dive is a phenom-enal physical and mental challenge,” the37-year-old told AFP. “Your body goesthrough very extreme changes.

“Your heart rate drops, all the bloodcomes to the centre of your body, andthen that blood starts to fill the lung tis-sues so that the air spaces can contracteven more.

“For every 10 metres (yards) that youdescend, the pressure doubles, so thatmeans your lungs halve in size. So downat 90 metres, 100 metres, they’re about aninth, tenth of the size.”

PARIS, 18 Dec—France’s Bureau of Inves-tigation and Analysis(BEA) published onThursday its second reporton the crash of the AirFrance airliner AF447 thatfell into the Atlantic, whichoutlined the latest progressbut said the real cause ofthe tragedy is still un-known.

Six months after the ac-cident that killed 228 peo-

Its first report releasedon 2 July said that theproblem of the airspeedsensors, called pitot tubes,

was broken and broughtmass criticism. The secondreport confirmed the incor-rect readings provided bythe defaulted pitot tubeswas “one element amonga chain of events that havecaused the accident” butexcluded it as the only rea-son.

This time, the analysisbureau suggested the Eu-ropean Aviation SafetyAgency (EASA) “modifythe certification criteria” ofpitot tubes at the end of thereport, saying recent testsfound out some equip-ment, in particular the pitotprobes “do not appear tobe well-adapted to flightsat high altitude.”

It also recommendedEASA “undertake studiesto determine with appro-priate precision the com-position of cloud masses athigh altitude.”—Xinhua

Robot records deepest eruptingundersea volcano

SAN FRANCISCO, 18 Dec— Scientists have recordedthe deepest eruptingundersea volcano everseen, capturing for the firsttime video of fiery moltenlava bubbles exploding4,000 feet beneath thePacific Ocean. Asubmersible robotwitnessed the eruption inMay during an underwaterexpedition near Samoa, and the high-definitionvideos were presented onThursday at a geophysicsconference in SanFrancisco.

Scientists hope theimages, data and samplesobtained during themission will shed new light

on how the earth’s crustwas formed. The researchcould also help explainhow some sea creaturessurvive and thrive inextreme environments andhow the earth behaveswhen tectonic platescollide.

“It was an under-water Fourth of July,”said Bob Embley, amarine geologist forthe National Oceanicand AtmosphericAdministration, in a newsrelease. “Since the waterpressure at that depthsuppresses the violence ofthe volcano’s explosions,we could get theunderwater robot within

feet of the active eruption.”The eruption was a

spectacular sight: Bright-red lava bubbles shot outof the volcano, releasing a smoke-like cloud ofsulfur. The lava frozealmost instantly as it hitthe cold sea water, causingblack rock to sink to thesea floor. The submersiblehovered near the blasts, its robotic arm reachinginto the lava to collectsamples.

VHeart drugs may help treatcolon cancer

UPPSALA, 18 Dec — A group of drugs used to treatheart failure shows promise for fighting colon cancer, researchers in Sweden said.

Jenny Felth and Joachim Gullbo both of UppsalaUniversity and colleagues said cardiac glycosides —a family of naturally derived drugs used to treatcongestive heart failure and abnormal heart rahythms— may prove useful in fighting many types of cancer.

As part of a larger study to screen and identifynatural substances with activity against colon cancer, the researchers tested five of these heart drugs againstlaboratory cultures of human colon cancer cells andfound they were all effective, to varying degrees, inkilling the cancer cells.

The sensitivity was rather low when compared withthat of other cancer cell types reported previously. However, several of the drugs also showed increasedanti-cancer activity when combined with certain drugsused for standard chemotherapy.—Internet
