To marry here, at least one party to the marriage should be an active parishioner, regularly attending Mass for one year before asking to schedule a wedding. As Catholics, we believe that God has a plan for marriage. Cohabitation before marriage is not part of God’s plan and decreases the chances of success in maintaining a permanent union. Cohabitating couples should separate and live apart before requesting the Sacrament of Matrimony. More information is available from the parish office regarding guidelines for weddings and parishioner status. Diocesan policy requires at least six months’ notice before setting a wedding date. SACRAMENTAL POLICY In order to receive First Holy Communion or Confirmation, students in Grades 2 and 8 must attend TWO FULL YEARS of religious instructions if they are NOT in our Catholic School system. FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK My dear people, Please join me in welcoming Father Antony back to Stella Maris. He has been enjoying a well-deserved vacation back in India. By nature, he is hard-working anyway and I kept him busy earlier during my own vacation. Father Antony has a strong connection with our people and I know you are all pleased to have him back. This coming week our liturgical schedule will not change but both Father Antony and I will spend much of the week in mandated attendance at the assembly of priests for the Atlanta Archdiocese, meeting in Charleston this year. Many people have thanked me for the letter to the Americans in the College of Cardinals regarding the scandal of the former Cardinal, Theodore McCarrick. While I appreciate the affirmation, I am saddened that such a letter should ever have to be written. For those unfamiliar with the letter, it is my own, limited attempt to “do something” about the scandal occasioned not simply by McCarrick’s moral failures but by his continued rise in the Church’s hierarchy, even as these scandals were reported. You can get more information at StellaMarisParish.org Sad to say, my own fallible opinion is that is comes down to the root of all evil: the love of money. For further insight, just google “McCarrick & the Papal Foundation”. This week, as I read accounts of abuse of seminary students, I can only be more thankful that I attended Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD, known at the time for its strong spiritual life. While no form of abuse should ever be minimized, it is somewhat encouraging to note that most of what we are reading about is in the past. As several of you have pointed out, I have yet to mention the old Charlestonians’ chant and hope for “a cool week in August.” Especially before air conditioning became ubiquitous, we would hope for that wonderful phenomenon when the jet stream dipped south and allowed arctic air all the way to our coast. Fondly, I can remember an August morning when we were scrambling to find our winter sweaters as the temperatures dipped into the 60’s. With air conditioning, it does not seem so important, but how fondly Charlestonians think about “a cool week in August.” Whatever the temperatures, may your week be good. Please pray that we be spared the storms of the season, especially the dreaded “September Storms,” i.e. hurricanes. Father McInerny
