The Greatest of All

In some way, and to some degree, we all want power. This is why children love their fictional superheroes: individuals who have superhuman strength, and can overcome the normal laws of physics. Our desire for power comes from the underlying realization that we are fragile, mortal beings. We know our time on earth is short, and we want to know that life has meaning, and value, and that we each, as individuals, are worth something. The problem is we try to find power, and self-worth, in the wrong places. From childhood, we find our value in being accepted by others, and we come to learn that there is power in belonging to some groups rather than others. As we continue to mature, we may take delight in physical strength, and beauty, as sources of power and influence. Later in life we begin to see money as a measure of our personal worth, and a means of power over others. Authority itself, whether through our position at work, or as an employer, or through an office we hold, can make us feel superior to others. But as life goes on, and the effects of age catch up with us, we may try to take control over the aging process, and even over death itself, by focusing on our health.

Ironically, the very things we try to use to gain power and greatness may actually enslave us, robbing us of power over our own lives. The need to be accepted may cause us to compromise our integrity. Vanity over our physical appearance may drive us to extremes, as we try to maintain what time is eroding. The quest for money can consume us, as the more we gain the more we desire. Authority over others can go to our heads, to the point that we begin to deny the intrinsic human dignity of those we oversee. And, the fear of impending death can snatch away the joy of life in the present moment.

The quest for power, and the desire to be the greatest, is one of the greatest causes of sin and suffering in the world. Our first reading demonstrates the contempt of some for the humble servant of God. They despise this faithful servant, because his holy example makes them look bad, and so they seek a way to destroy him. Rather than following the right path themselves, they seek to maintain their own power by doing away with the competition. This, of course, is a prophesy about Jesus Christ, and His rejection by the Jewish leadership, and by sinners in general. In our second reading, St. James asks, “Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice. Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from? Is it not from your passions that make war within your members?”

There is an old fable about a man who went into the forest to observe the lives of the wild creatures. He climbed a tree, and waited. In the early afternoon, a little fox came out into the clearing to roll on her back in the warm sunshine. But she was missing both of her front legs. The man wondered, how can this fox have such a round little belly, and be so carefree, if she is unable to hunt properly? So, he continued to watch. A little while later, a huge lion approached, carrying a rabbit in his mouth. He carefully dropped the rabbit before the fox, and went on his way. The man was astonished, and on his way home he encountered a monk. He told the monk about this clever fox who had tricked a lion into hunting for her. The monk replied, “What you witnessed was something greater than the cleverness of the fox; what you witnessed was the mercy of a humble lion.”

Jesus is the greatest of all, who lays down His life for sinners, and feeds us with His own flesh and blood. In the Eucharist, the Lord of Creation comes to us in great humility, in the form of simple bread and wine. While Jesus was on His way to the cross, the disciples were fighting over which of them was the greatest. Jesus explained that the greatest is the one who serves the others out of love and humility. By His humility, Jesus showed His greatness, and His power over sin and death. Greatness is found, not in physical strength, or in money, or in authority over others: our true value and self-worth is found in making our lives a gift to others, just as Jesus did. Jesus, the greatest of all, became the least of all, and brought about our redemption. The greatest power of all is divine love, and the greatest expression of love is humble service, which gives life to others. This is the most valuable lesson we learn from our Lord Jesus, the Greatest of All.

Fr. Roberts

Mass Coordinators NeededAre you looking for a way to get more involved at St. Barnabas but unsure what to do? We are relaunching our Mass Coordinator program and are

looking for volunteers to fill this important ministry.

If you like working behind the scenes this is your opportunity.

Mass Coordinators fill a vital role in helping ensure all the other ministries are in place for the Mass while allowing our Priests to focus solely on

preparing themselves to celebrate the Sacred Liturgy.

This is a rewarding and low-pressure opportunity for you to get involved and help support our parish.

If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Brian O’Toole directly at [email protected] or 317.366.5456.

Training will be provided. Thank You.

Curious About Catholicism? Each year on Holy Saturday during the Easter Vigil, thousands are baptized into the Catholic Church in the United States. Parishes welcome these new Catholics through a process called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Although these sessions are geared towards those learning about Catholicism for the first time, all are welcome to attend! If you are interested, please contact the Director of Faith Formation, Joe Sheehan at [email protected]

HooP NEWSThe word for today’s outing was HOT. At 95 degrees downtown, we passed out over 100 bottles of ice-cold water, along with wash cloths drenched in cool water. Thank you to Elizabeth Szentes and the group of moms who prepared today’s meal. The fruit with the happy messages were especially enjoyed. What a cute idea! Also a big thanks to Julie Daeger who has been providing sweet goodies for our outings. Fresh, dry, t-shirts and socks were very popular tonight. Thanks to all of you for your generous donations. We continue to need medium men’s undershorts, size L and XL t-shirts and white socks. Please pray for all those who are living on the streets in this heat, and those who are not fortunate enough to have air-conditioning. God Bless!
