Gospel Focus – Fear

When scripture uses the term fear, it tends to fall into one of two meanings. When used in the context of ‘do not be afraid’ or ‘fear not’, it is a command to not be daunted by the woes and trials that the world imposes. The other use tends to be a command that we should fear God. In this context, the word does not mean to be frightened of God but rather to show proper reverence. To fear God is to stand in wonder and awe rather than to cower and hide. So, fear God, but do not be afraid!

Living the Gospel – From the house-tops

One of the messages of Jesus to his disciples and, through him, of Matthew to the original community, is to have courage and to have pride in their belief. No matter what threat or persecution they are to endure, the command is to proclaim the message of Jesus from the house-tops. They are to be proud of what they believe and be prepared to share it with others. In a world today that is not always open to the message of Jesus, we too are called to be proud of what we believe and not whisper it in the darkness.

Scriptural Context – Q Source

This gospel passage that appears at Mt 10:26-33 is virtually reproduced in the gospel of Luke (12:2-12) but does not appear in the gospel of Mark. Both the gospels of Matthew and Luke draw extensively on the gospel of Mark as a source for their writing but scholars have also deduced that they shared another unknown source. The content of this lost source can only be deduced by the identification of parallel passages such as this one that appear in Matthew and Luke but not Mark. The undiscovered document is known as the ‘Q source’ after the German word, Quelle (source).

Questions for Adults

What message is meant to be conveyed by the imagery about the sparrows? What does it mean in today’s world to ‘declare oneself’ for Jesus? How might a message to ‘fear God’ be misunderstood and misused? Who is someone you admire because they are not afraid to live their faith?

SRE Learning From Home During the school shutdown, CCD designed some faith resources for families to access for their children as they learned from home. These lessons, which are fun and prepared specifically for each age group 5-13, are a good way to encourage children to converse about topics of faith at home. These lessons which affirm that they we are loved by God can be found at https://www.ccress.org.au/learning-from-home-sre-lessons/.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? Catholic Life Explained:

The Sign of Peace

Question: Why do Catholics give the sign of peace to one another at Mass?

Answer: The sign of peace is a part of the Mass that takes place immediately after we offer the Lord’s Prayer. Inspired by the Jesus’ words to his first followers, we stand together in a spirit of communion to pray as Jesus taught us: “Our Father who art in heaven…” In this prayer, we call for the coming of God’s kingdom in all its fullness and ask that God provides for our needs — “Give us, this day, our daily bread” — to forgive our sins and to bring us to the joy of heaven. It is almost natural, then, that the rite of peace would follow. As the celebrant prays that Christ’s peace will fill our hearts, our communities, the Church, and the whole world, we extend to those around us a sign of peace (usually a hug or a handshake) as a symbol of the communion that we experience now and will experience forever in the fullness of the reign of God. We are also reminded of Jesus’ teachings that if we are at prayer and remember that a brother or sister is holding something against us, then we are to go and seek reconciliation with them before we continue our prayer (see Matthew 5:23). And so, the sign of peace also reminds us of the need to truly be in communion — united in love and peace — with God and one another before we approach the altar to receive the Eucharist. So, the next time you’re at Mass and the time comes for the sign of peace, remember that this is a moment to celebrate the gift of Christ’s peace that each of us has received from God and to pass that peace along to those around us. We need this moment to practice, because this is also the same peace of Christ that we are instructed to carry out into the world at the end of Mass when the priest or deacon says to us, “Go, in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.”

SAINT THOMAS MORE

Patron Saint of adopted children, lawyers, civil servants, politicians,

and difficult marriages.

Feast Day : 22nd June

St. Thomas More, Martyr (Patron of Lawyers). St Thomas More was born in London in 1478. After a thorough grounding in religion and the classics, he entered Oxford University to study law, after which he embarked on a legal career which took him to Parliament. In 1505, he married Jane Colt who bore him four children, and when she died at a young age, he married a widow, Alice Middleton, to be a mother for his young children.

A wit and a reformer, this learned man numbered Bishops and scholars among his friends, and by 1516 wrote his world-famous book "Utopia".

He attracted the attention of Henry VIII who appointed him to a succession of high posts and missions, and finally made him Lord Chancellor in 1529. The rest of his life was spent in writing mostly in defence of the Church.

In 1534, with his close friend, St John Fisher, he refused to render allegiance to the King as the Head of the Church of England and was tried and convicted for treason. On July 6th, 1535, whilst on the scaffold, about to be beheaded, he told the crowd of spectators that he was dying as "the King’s good servant - but God's first." He was beatified by Pope Leo XIII in 1886 and canonized on 19th May, 1935 by Pope Pius XI.

A cop waited outside a popular pub hoping to nab a drunk-driver. At closing time, as everyone came out, he spotted his potential quarry. The man was so obviously inebriated that he could barely walk. He stumbled around the parking lot for a few minutes looking for his car. After trying his keys on five others, he finally found his own vehicle. He sat in the car a good 10 minutes as the other pub patrons left. He turned his lights on, then off. He started to pull forward into the grass, then stopped. Finally, when his was the last car, he pulled out onto the road and started to drive away. The cop, waiting for this, turned on his lights and pulled the man over. He administered the breathalyzer test and, to his great surprise, the man easily passed. The cop was dumbfounded. ‘This equipment must be broken,’ exclaimed the policeman. ‘I doubt it,’ said the man. ‘Tonight I’m the DD...Designated Decoy.’
