SAINT HELEN’S PARISH 5 th SUNDAY of LENT 2 nd April 2017 Unbind Him, Let Him Go Free THE WORD THIS WEEK The Gospel of the Fifth Sunday is perhaps the deepest meditation on the mystery of Baptism and membership of the Church. It is a prelude to the events of Easter Sunday, when we celebrate the triumph of life over death. To be plunged into the waters of baptism is to be buried with Christ, only to rise with him from the waters. This paradox of life and death is the content of today’s readings. There is no more important part of our faith that the resurrection: that Christ rose from the dead is the very centre and heart of all that we believe - without it, our faith is useless. In the same way our belief in our own resurrection is vital: it is the most deeply needed gift that Christ gives us. This is why the climax of the instructions given to candidates for Baptism was this teaching: that Christ would give them life after death. Look ahead to the 3rd Sunday of Easter, where Saint Peter preaches to the crowds what he teaches them is that life comes after death, as it did for Lazarus, and for Christ himself. TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: (Psalter: Week 1) Ezekiel 37: 12 - 14. I shall put my spirit in you and you will live. Response: Psalm 129. Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord, Lord hear my voice! O let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleading. If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness: for this we revere you. My soul is waiting for the Lord, I count on his word. My soul is longing for the Lord// more than the watchman for daybreak. (Let the watchman count on daybreak// and Israel on the Lord. Because with the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption, Israel indeed he will redeem from all its iniquity. Romans 8: 8 11. The Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you. Acclamation for the Gospel: Praise to you, Oh Christ, King of eternal Glory! I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord; Whoever believes in me will never die. Praise to you, Oh Christ, King of eternal Glory! John 11: 1 45. Prayer of the Faithful: I am the resurrection and the life R/. Lord, hear our voice.

SAINT HELEN’S PARISH

5th SUNDAY of LENT 2nd April 2017

Unbind Him, Let Him Go Free

THE WORD THIS WEEK The Gospel of the Fifth Sunday is perhaps the deepest meditation on the mystery of Baptism and membership of the Church.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: (Psalter: Week 1)

Ezekiel 37: 12 - 14.

Romans 8: 8 – 11. The Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you.

Acclamation for the Gospel: Praise to you, Oh Christ, King of eternal Glory! I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord;

Whoever believes in me will never die. Praise to you, Oh Christ, King of eternal Glory!

John 11: 1 – 45. Prayer of the Faithful: I am the resurrection and the life R/. Lord, hear our voice.

Sharing the Lord’s Supper on Maundy Thursday, 13th April, at 7.30pm. Following Our Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, 3.00pm.

Celebrating and being Baptised again into Communion in his Risen Easter Life on Holy Saturday Night, 8.30pm.

Book it now!

From Ashes – through Water – to Fire From Death to New Life THE SEASON OF LENT / EASTER

This weekend we celebrate the THIRD SCRUTINY in preparation for Easter Communion.

Saint Helen’s Primary School pupils, staff, and parents will take on many of the ministries.

EAST AFRICAN FAMINE: a huge THANK YOU for your generosity as £872.82p has been sent to CAFOD’s emergency appeal.

“RISEN”, A Film for Lent, will be shown in the Hall this Tuesday, 730pm: Free Entry!

On Thursday evening the adults asking for Easter

Communion will celebrate a PASSOVER SEDER with their sponsors. There are a few spaces for fellow parishioners who wish to join: Please see the list in the porch to book a place.

CELEBRATING EASTER: At the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Maundy Thursday we bring out the Samaritan woman’s water jug to remember that Mission Service is the source and summit of our faith, washing feet, and bringing gifts for the poor: Please bring a can or other non-perishable food for the Food Bank to put in the offertory, along with money to support our Diocesan project to house Syrian Refugee families.

The Celebration of the Passion on Good Friday focuses on the Tree of Life, the Cross.

In the great Vigil and Mass of Easter on Holy Saturday Night we revisit all the promises of God’s self-revealing, and celebrate them fulfilled and realised for us as, with Lazarus, we celebrate our initiation into and are renewed in the risen life of Christ, sharing again in the waters of Baptism and the outpouring of the Spirit Confirming us in Communion in the Body of Christ, the Church.

‘LAY MINISTERS OF FUNERALS’: In May, our Diocese will begin training candidates to work as Ministers of Funerals, to broaden the care and prayer our Parishes can offer to bereaved families as they give their loved ones back to God. As well as strong faith and a certain confidence in meeting and working with strangers as well as friends, this Ministry, like all Christian service, demands sensitivity and delicacy, We are asked to choose and form a Parish team, ready for the preliminary training in May.

YOUR VOICE MATTERS – MEGA YOUTH POLL: In 2018, Pope Francis will invite Bishops and others to Rome to talk about Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment. They will discuss how the Catholic Church can accompany young people in their faith and help them to hear God’s call. If you are aged between 13 – 29 years old, the Catholic Church in England and Wales would like to hear from you: We want to hear what life is like, your thoughts on faith, and how you connect with the Catholic Church. To help you tell us we have created a Youth Poll that you can access using this link https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/parish-youth-poll or by scanning this QR code with your phone. If you’re not in this age group but would like to help, please encourage the young people you know to respond to this poll by giving them the link or QR code. For queries about the Youth Poll please email: [email protected].

The first National MASS for FAMILY GROUPS in England & Wales is being celebrated at the Cathedral Church of Saint Mary and Saint Thomas, Northampton on Saturday, May 6th 2017 at 12.30 by Rt Rev Peter Doyle, Bishop of Northampton and Patron of Family Groups in England and Wales and is open to all members of the parish. CHRISTIAN PRAYER. Section Two: The Lord’s Prayer: ‘Our Father’

Article 3: The Seven Petitions. I. ‘Hallowed Be Thy Name’ (2803) The holiness of God is the inaccessible centre of his eternal mystery. What is revealed of it in

creation and history, Scripture calls ‘glory’, the radiance of his majesty (Cf. Psalms 8; Isaiah 6: 3.). In

making man in his image and likeness, God ‘crowned him with glory and honour’, but by sinning,

man fell ‘short of the glory of God’. From that time on, God was to manifest his holiness by revealing

and giving his name, in order to restore man to the image of his Creator (Colossians 3: 10).
