PASTOR’S PARAGRAPHS 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time

October 3, 2021

A couple returned home happy but tired after celebrating their fortieth anniversary with friends. Before falling into bed, he offered to make her a late-night snack. They went downstairs. While she slumped into a stool along the kitchen counter, he collected the ham, cheese, lettuce, mayo, and mustard from the refrigerator. Reaching into the bread box, he took out the last four slices of bread. He carefully made two sandwiches and cut each into quarters, the way she liked them. He placed one sandwich on a plate and put it in front of her. “Why do you always give me the sandwich with the heel of the bread?” she asked. “I know I have never said anything before, but I don’t like the heel of the bread.” Embarrassed, he replied, “I always give you the heel of the bread because it’s my favorite piece.”

You could fault the husband with not knowing that piece of information, but you can’t fault his attitude toward his wife. This weekend’s Genesis and Gospel readings underscore the importance of marriage. Marriage was the first institution created by God. He did it to give spouses the comfort and support of each other and to bring children into the world. These are two essential ends of marriage, and must always remain linked in married life. Marriage is a source of blessing for couples and for the Church, which is called “the bride of Christ.”

October is Respect Life Month. We reflect on and celebrate the gift of human life, from natural conception to natural death. Marriage and human life are both sacred. They come from the hands of a loving Creator and reflect the image of God. Couples who give themselves totally to each other throughout their lives live the vocation of love in the closest possible way. This love often leads to children, who are a source of blessing for both the Church and society. After all, children grow up to be doctors, farmers, realtors, businessmen, lawyers, policemen, architects, engineers, teachers, priests, and sisters.

Welcome your spouse in marriage means welcoming his/her fertility. Fertility is a beautiful gift. Contraception rejects this beautiful gift. It compromises the gift of fertility. It is body language. When we greet someone with a smile, a hearty handshake, or a kiss, we use language which says, “I am happy to see you.” When we point angrily at someone, we say, “I accuse you of (whatever it is).” A wink, a nod, and an open hand are gestures that we call body language. Contraception is body language that says, “I will take only part of you, not all of you” in a relationship that says, “I take all of you and give all of me.” This is a lie.

Love leads to life. The longer form of today’s Gospel highlights the idea of welcoming children after Our Lord’s teaching on faithful marriage. Faithfulness and fruitfulness are key characteristics of marriage. This is the basis of the family, which is called the “sanctuary of life.” There is no life without the family. October is Month of the Rosary. The Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries are rich sources of reflection for us as individuals and for us as a Church community. As we celebrate this month and reflect on marriage and family, let us ask Mary, Mother of God and Mother of the Church to pray for married persons, engaged persons, and those considering a vocation to marriage. May Our Lady of Cana watch over our marriages and keep our families strong.

God bless you. Fr. Ray Atwood

Background on the Gospel Reading Mark 10:2-16

Today we continue to read from the Gospel according to Mark. For the past three Sundays, we have been hearing Mark’s reports of conversations between Jesus and his disciples. Recall that in Mark’s Gospel, Jesus uses these private moments to teach his disciples in greater detail about the Kingdom of God. Beginning with today’s Gospel, Jesus returns to Judea, Jewish territory, and resumes his public ministry. The first verse of chapter 10 of Mark’s Gospel tells us that crowds gathered around Jesus, and he taught them, as was his custom. Immediately, the Pharisees approach Jesus to test him. The Pharisees question Jesus about the lawfulness of divorce. Under specific conditions, divorce was an accepted practice among the Jewish people during the time of Jesus. It was regulated by the Law of Moses, as found in Deuteronomy 24:1-5. This law only permits that a husband may divorce his wife if he finds her to be indecent. This is the justification that the Pharisees reference when Jesus inquires about the commandment of Moses. In reply, Jesus quotes from the Book of Genesis and counters that God’s original intention was that men and women would become one flesh in marriage. Jesus describes the teaching of Moses as a concession made to God's original intention because of human stubbornness. In private, Jesus’ disciples question him further about this teaching on divorce. It is to his disciples that Jesus lays out the implications of his teaching by explaining that remarriage after divorce is adultery. Jesus’ teaching was more restrictive than the teaching of the Pharisees, which permitted remarriage. Jesus further distinguished his teaching from the cultural norms of his time by applying his words equally to men and women. Jewish culture permitted only that a husband may divorce his wife. Wives were not permitted to divorce their husband for any reason, including adultery. At first glance, the final part of today’s Gospel seems unconnected to the previous teaching about divorce. When read together, however, these passages present a strong picture of Jesus’ emphasis on the importance of family. God intended for women and men to be joined together in marriage. Among the purposes of marriage is the raising of children. By welcoming children and fostering their relationship with God, parents and families bear witness to the Kingdom of God. At the end of today’s Gospel, the people were bringing their children to Jesus, and again Jesus’ disciples show that they just don’t get it. Recall that in the Gospel for each of the past two Sundays, Jesus has taught his disciples the value and importance of these “little ones” in the Kingdom of God. Yet in today’s Gospel, the disciples try to prevent people from bringing their children to Jesus. Jesus reprimands his disciples and welcomes these children. Again Jesus offers these children as an example of the kind of complete trust and dependence upon God that ought to be the attitude of all believers. From Loyola Press Sunday Connection
