Application process

To be eligible, you must meet the following internship requirements:

• Native English speaker

• University degree (Bachelors minimum in any field of study)

• Clean criminal record

• Between the age of 20 and 35

• In good health – enough to carry out the duties of a full-time teacher (Any chronic health conditions to be disclosed in your application as a health check is required for the work permit in Thailand)

How to apply

Sign up over the telephone with one of our representatives. We will get you booked on to the required TEFL training and send you the online application form.

Send your application to ELC as soon as possible. We recommend within two weeks as internship spaces fill up fast

Send your supporting documents to ELC – these include your passport, university degree, etc.

Some interns are asked to attend a Skype interview but don’t worry, you will be given time to prepare if you are required to attend one!

Applications are reviewed by ELC. Applicants should expect a response within two weeks.

Pre-departure information

Flights

Please do not book your flights until you receive a written letter of invitation from ELC confirming your acceptance on the internship programme. ELC will also inform you which airport to fly into.

Essential documentation

What documents you need to bring with you to Thailand. Please note, only original documents can be accepted – photocopies, transcripts and scanned copies are not accepted.

• Original university degree certificate • Passport (needs to be current and with at least six months left on it

before it expires so it covers you for the duration on your placement in Thailand

• Original TEFL certificate • Your criminal background check

Visas and work permits

Once accepted onto the program, interns will receive an invitation letter by email from their placement school. With this letter, you can apply for your 90-day non-immigrant B-visa through the Thai embassy in your country (either in person or by post). Your school will renew your non-immigrant B-visa after three months.

Your work permit and teaching license will be obtained on your behalf once in Thailand. The above documentation - original undergraduate degree certificate, criminal background check and TEFL certificate - are all required to apply for the work permit so don’t forgot to bring these. Interns also have to pass a health check before a work permit can be issued.

Your TEFL trainingYou complete our 140-hour Premier TEFL Course before you leave for Thailand so you are ready to hit the ground running and can start teaching from day one.This course includes one weekend classroom course and 120 hours of online study. You can select a classroom course date that is suitable for you. We recommend completing your classroom course at least eight weeks before you fly out to Thailand so you can have your certificate in plenty of time.

What you will learn online

There are four online modules to complete:

A. Grammar and Language AwarenessDo you know the difference between the first and second conditionals? The order of adjectives? This module covers the terminology and rules behind English grammar so you can teach it with confidence in classroom.

B. Teaching Methodologies Learn how to manage your classroom; plan, prepare and deliver lessons and teach skill-based lessons.

C. Video Observation By now, you will have an idea of what makes a great English lesson. Let’s take it a step further and watch the professionals do it!

D. Specialist Modules

Teaching Large ClassesLearn how to adapt your classroom activities and lesson planning to classes with 30+ students.

Telephone Teaching Adapt your lesson planning skills to teaching over the telephone where you don’t have any visual cues or aids to work with.

Your teaching orientation in ThailandBefore you start your teaching placement, you will have a six-day orientation in Bangkok with other teaching interns. It’s a great chance to meet other interns on the programme and learn more about what you can expect over your next five months in Thailand.

The orientation includes:

• Airport pickup• Accommodation and meals• Orientation to living in Thailand• Lessons in basic conversational Thai• Teacher training workshops• Social and cultural activities• City tour and activities • Internship handbook and welcome pack • Thai phrasebook• Visa and work permit sponsorship and support and teacher’s license

Your teaching placement You will be teaching for 23 hours per week plus 12 to 15 hours of lesson planning and teacher admin = a total of 35 hours.

The school day starts early, classes normally begin at 7am and finish at 5pm. There is a long break for lunch in the middle of the day. Teaching interns should expect to stay at the school for the duration of the school day.

You will have at least one full day off per week. In Thailand, the typical school week can include classes on a Saturday so you should expect to work five to six days per week.

Your duties and responsibilities at the school

• Teaching classes• Classroom admin like taking the register and marking homework• Lesson planning and preparing materials• Attend staff meetings as required• Attending after-school activities and cultural events

Who you will be teaching

Interns can state a preference on their application for the age of students they would like to teach. The following age groups are available to choose from:

• Kindergarten 4-6 year olds• Primary school 6-11 year olds• High school 12-18 year olds• University/college 18+

Where it will be in Thailand

Internships are available in the coastal provinces of Trat, Chantaburi and Rayong. Please note location and age preferences cannot be guaranteed.

Living and working in ThailandAccommodation

Interns will share a twin room during orientation. Once at your placement, interns usually have furnished single accommodation shared with other teaching interns.

Bills

Interns are responsible for paying their utility bills e.g. water, electric and wi-fi.

Internet access

Interns will have internet access at their placement school and in many cases at their accommodation too. Wi-fi is widely accessible in Thailand.

You are primarily there to teach during your placement so we recommend travel plans after you have completed your internship.

FAQs

Q. Can I go with a friend/my partner?

A. Yes, you can apply for the internship with a partner or friend. Interns who nominate to be together on application will be accommodated to the best of ELC’s ability. In some cases interns may share accommodation but be placed at nearby schools.

Q. When should I book my flights to Thailand?

A. You should only arrange your flight to Thailand once you have received an acceptance letter from English Language Company.

Q. Can I choose where I am placed?

A. Interns are placed in the coastal provinces of Trat, Chantaburi and Rayong. Location preferences cannot be guaranteed.

Q. Can I return home for Christmas and New Year?

A. No, you are under contract to the school to intern for the period they have nominated.

Q. What sort of travel insurance do I need?

A. Insurance is compulsory. You must ensure you have adequate travel and medical insurance for the duration of your stay in Thailand. It must cover you as a passenger on a motorcycle and to be in a workplace abroad (most working holiday policies do this).

• Your original degree certificate• A clean police record or ICPC• Passport• Your original TEFL certificate • A health check certificate (this is issued in Thailand)
