SMP Overarching Principles
• The recognition of the customary rights of iwi
• Our coastal environment is changing and our coastal
communities need to adapt
• What we cannot know is the exact characteristics, extent and timing of that
change
• However, we can predict the expected trajectory of change - this is what
the hazard mapping does
• The SMP Project relates to all public and private assets at
the coast, irrespective of ownership and responsibility
• The need to achieve different outcomes/have different
approaches for different locations is acknowledged
• These differences will come to the fore when management and policy
approaches are agreed for individual stretches of coast
