Change is coming to Sedgwick County 4-H I wanted to reach out to you to let you know about our immediate plans to support 4-H programming after Jodi Besthorn’s retirement. While will certainly miss Jodi and her years of expertise, insight, and knowledge, we are also looking forward to continuing the programs that makes 4-H an unmatched youth development program as well as the opportunity to take a step back and evaluate gaps for new opportunities.

One of the first items that we have had to think about is Jodi’s replacement. As a new Director, I have been asking for input from the state leaders as well as other Directors throughout the state in much of my decision-making this year, this topic is no exception. There seems to be two options: 1 – keep the two-agent structure with assistants and an office professional, 2 – consider having one agent for administrative oversight and one manager along with assistants and an office professional. Hiring a manager might save us in salary expenses as he/she would be an hourly professional. That would mean less accountability, less training and support from K-State, and sub-par benefit options. By hiring an agent, he/she will go through new agent training and our Center would get a percentage of salary support from K-State. There is also a belief that an agent would have more authority when working with various groups and representing Extension. Therefore, after much input from state leaders, 4-H leaders, local 4-H advocates, as well as Shannon and Jodi; we have decided to commence a search for a 4-H agent. Taken directly from the job description, this person will “[j]ointly lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive 4-H program for school-aged youth in cooperation with local residents and extension colleagues. The primary focus of this position is youth development, specifically in the areas of club management, development and support, volunteerism, support for FCS projects, leadership program, shooting sports, and youth engagement in state/national events. The selected candidate will be expected to provide programs that are research-based and designed for diverse audiences and include a variety of educational delivery methods. The agent must be able to work as part of a 4-H team including one other 4-H youth development agent, two part-time program assistants,

and one office professional in the county to oversee delivery of 4-H educational programs.” The timeline for this search is as follows:

• August 20 – announcement is posted • September 10 – job posting closes • September 23 – screen applicants • October 3 – interview top candidates

Please visit the KSRE website for additional information about the job opening: https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/jobs/current_openings/index.html

While we are in the process of searching for an additional 4-H agent, Shannon Rogge will work with Janet Donaghue, Cathy Jones, and Barbara Wingfield in the planning and preparation for all fall 4-H events including State Fair, Carnival, KAP Judging, and Recognition Banquet. Shannon will also be the primary contact for the Advisory Council, PDC, and other committees.

We appreciate your support and patience as we move through this transition phase and start a new year of 4-H to make the best better!

Sincerely, Jennifer Brantley, PhD. County Extension Director

the technical start of the 4-H year. Members are asked to complete the re-enrollment by December 1. If you don’t re-enroll by December 1 you will not be able to compete at the fair or other competitive events. THIS IS A FIRM DEADLINE!

Project Materials for 2019-20 All members who are taking a project for the first time, will receive the first year project book with their club materials. After that, members can come into the office and pick up the next years materials at their convenience or when they need them. So if this is your second or more year in the project, stop by the office and see if there are new materials for you!

Projects that have more than one level of materials include: Foods, Photography, Dog, Woodworking, Rocketry, Sewing and Livestock.

Project leaders may also come in at any time and ask for the helpers guide and any other project materials that we have.

All members in all projects will receive a copy of the generic record sheet, and personal page each fall after enrollment. The 4-H department will fill these for you and put them in your club box.

Page 4: Thank you for your years of service, enjoy retirement! · Thank you for your years of service, enjoy retirement! Change is coming to Sedgwick County 4-H . I wanted to reach out to

Tag-alongs are called “Cloverbuds” in the 4-H online enrollment system. There is no membership fee for Cloverbuds.

NEW MEMBER PROJECT DEADLINE March 1st is the last day to enroll in projects for the 4-H year. Potential members should visit clubs prior to enrollment. By March the 4-H year is half gone and many club committees have been formed, etc.
