In 2007, Sister Eileen McNerney celebrated her Golden Jubliee, marking 50 years of service as a Sister of St. Joseph of Orange. This summer, she was elected Assistant General Superior for their General Council. “During my five year term I will make certain that the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph is strong and thriving wherever we are,” says Sister Eileen.

As the founder of Taller San Jose and a leader of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Sister Eileen is a luminous figure in our community. To honor her contributions to the community, Taller San Jose established an endowment fund. Become a member of the Sister Eileen Legacy Society by making a gift to our

permanently endowed fund at the Orange Catholic Foundation, or leave Taller San Jose in your living will or trust. For more information on the Sister Eileen Legacy Society, please call Christa Sheehan at (714) 543-5105 ext. 112.

Dear Friends,

Over the past 15 years, we’ve learned that people don’t learn how to work by sitting in the classroom. That’s why Taller San Jose is focused on that critical gap between where a disadvantaged youth is stuck and where a good entry level job begins. This focus has proven successful. Taller San Jose graduates are employed and stay employed, are apprentices, and college students. The need for Taller San Jose is not going away; in fact, it’s growing.

The number of young adults in Central Orange County living in poverty is somewhere around 55,000. It’s a shocking statistic and to meet this growing need, Taller San Jose is focusing on sustainability. Whether it is through the continued development of Hope Builders, our general contracting company, or relationships with post-secondary institutions linking graduates to college degrees, Taller San Jose is singularly focused on moving young people from poverty to self-sufficiency.

You make it possible for us to provide essential job training, mentoring, life skills, career coaching and job placement to 200 young men and women annually. We continue to work diligently to ensure that your investment in a young life makes a difference into the future.

Best of Friends Awards

“15 Years and Just Getting Started”

On September 10th, Taller San Jose celebrated the 15th Annual Light up a Life Dinner Auction and the transformation of 4,500 young lives. The event hosted

500 guests at Mission San Juan Capistrano and raised $515,000 in net income. The event festivities included a vibrant silent auction, a delicious meal served by Turnip Rose Elite Catering, and an inspirational program featuring student speaker Nolan and a video produced by DGWB Advertising. CEO/Executive Director, Shawna Smith proudly shared that Hope Builders, Inc., Taller San Jose’s licensed general contracting venture, is on track to generate $300,000 in revenue for the organization annually. She also honored 2011 Best of Friends recipients, Bruce & Cindy Hamlin of Guaranty Chevrolet, and recognized the company for their donation of 11 cars to Taller San Jose, valued at more than $400,000.

Next, bidders snagged exciting live auction items – like a Disney Dream Vacation and Alaskan Getaway – and sponsored 64 $1,000 Amigo scholarships. The night culminated with the grand prize drawing for a 2011 Chevy Volt, donated by Guaranty Chevrolet of Santa Ana.

Special thanks to all who supported the 15th Annual Light up a Life Dinner Auction, including its event guests, underwriters, volunteers, and corporate sponsors.

We hope to see you at the 16th Annual Light up a Life Dinner Auction on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Mission San Juan Capistrano.

For several years, DGWB Advertising has donated their time and talent to produce short films for Light up a Life. Guests are treated to a premier

viewing of the film during the event’s dinner, which is one of the highlights of the evening.

For Taller San Jose’s 15th anniversary celebration, DGWB produced a film that tells the story of our founding and shows what the organization is doing to keep moving forward. You can watch the video by typing bit.ly/15YearsVideo into your web browser.

Each year at Light up a Life, Taller San Jose selects an outstanding individual or business to honor at Light up a Life with the Best of Friends Award. By providing

financial contributions, recruiting more supporters, hiring graduates, volunteering their time, serving on boards, and much more, these Best of Friends are truly committed to impacting the lives of the young people at Taller San Jose.

15th Annual Light Up a Life Gala

First Bank began supporting Taller San Jose

in 2010 and in just one year has had a great impact on students like Maggie.

When Maggie joined Taller San Jose’s office training program, she had only used a computer a few times and felt shy and uneasy around her classmates. “I was struggling with myself and didn’t have any direction,” remembers Maggie.

“I wanted to provide a better life for my daughter and make her proud of me, so I just pushed forward.”

As Maggie progressed in the 16 week program, she began preparing for her mock interview.

She developed her resume and learned how to dress professionally. On the day of her mock interview, she met with volunteer, Cydney Olea, VP/Branch Manager of First Bank.

“I enjoyed being a part of someone’s career path,” says Cyndey.

Maggie did continue on with her career path – today she works full time for American’s Helping Center. Last Spring she was nominated for the Orange County Spirit of Volunteering Award for her work with MOMS OC.

In the meantime, more First Bank employees have gotten involved with Taller San Jose, volunteering as mock interviewers and serving on an advisory board. The company also sponsored the 15th Annual Light up a Life Gala.

“When I volunteered, I truly got to see how effective of a program this is. The students did an exceptional job and it’s great to see their personal growth,” says Therese DeGroot, Market President.

First Bank is truly committed to helping young people like Maggie, and we are grateful to have them by our side.

You can help build futures at Taller San Jose by getting involved. Here are just a few ways you can help:

Greetings from Shawna Smith

Now that Taller San Jose has been successfully changing young peoples’ lives for 15 years, it is clear that Sister Eileen has left a legacy that is deserving of support today and in the future. in 2006, Jannette was given the opportunity to touch even more lives when taller San Jose’s Board of Director created a scholarship in her name. today, Janette ingardia Scholarships are awarded annually to students who have exemplified Janette’s generosity, determination, and leadership.

Fifteen years after taller San Jose’s founding, Jannette and her husband Sam still attend light up a life and sponsor amigo Scholarships. we are deeply grateful to have them by our side.

Everybody Needs an AmigoEach year, 200 young people enroll in Taller San Jose looking for a way out of their troubles. We are looking for an Amigo – a $1,000 scholarship sponsor – for each one of them. By becoming an Amigo, you will provide a student:

• 16 weeks of job training

• Life skills workshops, like money management and healthy relationships

• Weekly sessions with a case manager to sort out their personal barriers and make goals

To sponsor a $1,000 Amigo Scholarship, please call (714) 543-5105 ext. 121 or visit www.tallersanjose.org

on Saturday, September 10 at the 15th annual light up a life gala, nolan stepped onto the stage to tell his story to 500 guests. “i never thought i could be on this path,” nolan shared. “this entire situation has taken me by surprise.”

nolan was raised by a single mother and spent three years living in a motel room with his mother and three brothers. During that time his older

brothers used drugs and went in and out of jail. “i feared that one day, i would end up like them,” remembers nolan.

nolan graduated high school with good grades; but he lacked the guidance and support to pursue college. “i didn’t have a job or an education. i didn’t even know what i wanted to do with my life.”

a friend convinced him to join taller San Jose. “i started learning how to take vital signs and administer injections. More than that, i discovered a motivation and a passion for a career in the medical field that i never thought i would have.”

Since graduating, nolan was accepted into UCi’s phlebotomy program and works part time at Bristol Park. “i know that i would not be here if it were not for taller San Jose. i have become more determined, more passionate, and extremely well-trained.”
