Parelli e-News July 6, 2007 PARELLI WORLDWIDE JULY 6, 2007 Question: I’m having trouble currying my yearling’s stomach. I can “friendly” her there, brush her, and even use the (soft, rubber) curry in the direction of hair growth, but whenever I try to actually use the curry properly she seems about to fall over (ticklish?) and even nipped me on one early occasion. I do not think it is an issue of trust because I have been handling her since she was 6 weeks old, starting the 7 games when she was a 5mo old weanling, and there are no other “trouble spots” that have lasted like this one. Any ideas? Answer: It sounds like your mare doesn’t like it! Some horses are more sensitive than others, and when they go to nip you they are trying to tell you something. If she finds it so unpleasant you might be best to find another way to groom her that is more pleasurable for her. Remember that grooming is a time for bonding, not just getting your horse clean so beware that the bond can be disturbed by asking her to put up with something like that. FREE Weekly Savvy Podcasts!

This week: Pat talks about how our horses learn.

Click here for the Parelli Podcast Home Page. These are brief, helpful tips from Pat and Linda that can be viewed on your computer or can be downloaded to an iPod. Savvy Club members can enjoy the archive in our members’ web site.

Don Halladay, 3-Star Licensed Parelli Instructor, came together with Windreach Farms to support their therapeutic riding program with a fundraising Parelli Natural Horsemanship demonstration on April 15, 2007. Don invited six of his students to join him and during the well-attended demonstration, Don gave a running commentary on the Parelli Program and played with his horses, Maverick and Cutter, in all four savvys. The students proved beyond a doubt that horsemanship can be achieved using understanding, communication and psychology. The audience was treated to an afternoon of people having fun with their horses, along with a good look at what a healthy relationship between horse and human can look like. A successful day for all participants, there was a lot of interest generated in Parelli Natural Horsemanship!

Visit www.parelli.com and click on ‘Instructors’ and then scroll down to find Canada’s Licensed Parelli Professionals. Don Halladay, Fawn Anderson, Sandy Lang, Genevieve Benoit, and Ron Pyne are all happily available to assist you and your horse! Give them a call or visit their web sites to read about their experiences with horses and with Parelli.

“I enjoyed watching each horse/human combination develop their confidence in each other over the 4 days…watching the humans grow in confidence in their own ability to read a situation, make a decision, change a decision, experiment and experience…watching the horses start to trust their humans more, become more left-brained even in a more challenging environment, and at the end of it all, our goal was that everyone felt they could do it again tomorrow…on their own. Each day, I felt everyone was more independent, more assertive, more in control of their experiences. I love to take these camps each year, and see students apply their principles to a ‘real’ purpose. It was all over so quick, and we’re all looking forward to next year already!”
