Community Showcase: Let’s Paint the Town - City of Armstrong

While judging the Town of Oliver for Communities in

Bloom several years ago, I recalled their campaign to

paint the town, which proved to be highly successful in

revitalizing their business core. Efforts are being made to

improve the "look" of downtown Armstrong, and the

possibility of gleaning the idea from Oliver, seemed like a

great way to accomplish our mission.

The program began by contacting the BC/Yukon rep for

Beauti-Tone Paints. Beauti-Tone Paint is sold through

"Home Hardware" stores across Canada and is a National

Sponsor of CiB. A partnership was formed between the

City of Armstrong, Beauti-Tone Paints and our local

Shepherd's Home Hardware store.

To start an awareness of the "Let's Paint the Town"

campaign, a "Launch" was organized, with invitations

personally delivered to all the businesses in town. Those

attending the launch were able to meet the "Partners",

with discussions taking place regarding incentives,

timelines, and how the program would work.

City staff demonstrated how to upload photos to the

website, so people could see what their buildings would

look like using the Colour Visualizer, found on the Beauti-

Tone website. Armstrong Heritage Committee members

were on hand, to discuss the designation Heritage Colour

palette, for those owners of Heritage Buildings. The

Shepherd's Home Hardware paint consultant was on

hand to answer questions regarding paint choices, paint

products and to assist by estimating paint quantities

required. Local paint contractors and power washing

businesses were invited to attend, and/or leave their

business cards so they could be matched up with those

wanting to upgrade their buildings.

The Launch was held on Aug 21st, 2018, which would

normally allow about 6 weeks before the temperatures

dropped below advisable exterior paint times. Giving a

few winter months to plan and budget for paint

renovations, a re-launch will be held as spring arrives,

and the campaign will continue through until September

2019.

The City of Armstrong has led by example, starting the

process of painting the exterior of their office buildings.

Three other commercial buildings in town have already

done some painting, with many others committed to

beginning in the Spring.

The project was well received, and the enthusiasm was

contagious. Seeing the efforts of those that began since

the launch, will undoubtably spur more participants. As a

committee, we will actively keep the project in the lime-

light during the winter months, adding new initiatives and

encouragements to "Let's Paint the Town".
