Close reading just got a whole lot more fun! Jordan, her sister, and

friends are here with some a summertime mystery that will help your students

read a little closer.

There are two versions of this passage. The first passage is a little

higher reading and comprehension level. The second passage is a little lower

level and you will know it by the * beside the title.

Copy a reading passage for each of your students. Or, if you want

to save some paper, make one copy for a small group or set of partners in your

class. You could even just make one copy for a document camera or print

zero’s copies and display the passages on your SMART board.

Students can work the close reading questions as a whole group or

as individual comprehension practice. This passage is great for centers,

homework, earlier finishers, reading groups, and so much more. You will find

the answer key are at the end of the packet.

The Case of the Mysterious Water BottleJordan, her family, and a few friends decided to visit a waterpark not

too far from their home. When the group arrived, there was a lot to do before the kids could go play. They set up their chairs, umbrellas, and applied, or put on their sunscreen. At that time, Jordan’s mom noticed that she had forgotten the water

bottles. She was worried that the kids would not have enough to drink on such a hot day and hoped the concession stand would have some she could buy. Once

everything was set up, Jordan and her friends were ready to go play. All the kids ran to their favorite activity. Jordan and her friend Katy went to the waterslide.

After going down the slide a few times, Jordan walked back over to her chair. When she got there, she could not believe her eyes… a bottle of water had

mysteriously appeared! Where did the water bottle come from?

All the kids ran to their favorite activity first,

The concession stand probably had water

bottles for sale, so mom bought one and put it on Jordan’s chair for her to drink.

Jordan ran to the slide, so it must be her favorite activity.
