his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:20-21).

The name Jesus is derived from a Hebrew verb, which means “to save.” Indeed, God’s Messiah will be a Savior. His very name, Jesus, will be powerful above all other names.

This is beautifully expressed by words of an anonymous author:

To an artist, he is the One altogether lovely.

To an architect, he is the Chief Cornerstone.

To an astronomer, he is the Sun of Righteousness.

To a baker, he is the Living Bread.

To a banker, he is the Hidden Treasure.

To a biologist, he is Life.

To a carpenter, he is the Sure Foundation.

To a doctor, he is the Great Physician.

To an educator, he is the Great Teacher.

To a farmer, he is the Sower and Lord of the Harvest.

To a florist, he is the Rose of Sharon.

To a geologist, he is the Rock of Ages.

To a jeweler, he is the Pearl of Great Price.

To a philosopher, he is the Wisdom of God.

To a Christian, he is the Son of the Living God, the Savior and Lord.

Are you ready for Novem—brrr?!

As the saying goes, “Ready or not…”

By the end of this month, all who are part of God’s Church will be asked to “get ready” for Christ’s birth. That’s the essence of Advent.

It’s going to be a quick turnaround this November. Thanksgiving Day will be the 27th, and the First Sunday of Advent will be the 30th. This month, God will be summoning us to review basics, such as:

1) The practice of giving thanks dates far back in human history.

Thanksgiving dates back to a time well before President Abraham Lincoln’s 1863 proclamation of a federal holiday, and still farther back than the renowned 1621 Plymouth, Massachusetts feast. Thanksgiving is an act of faith repeatedly prescribed in Old Testament Psalms.

2) The Son of God has a simple yet powerful name: Jesus.

My thanks to our congregation, Ivy Chapel UCC, for surprising me on Sunday, Oct. 12 with expressions of appreciation for serving God as your pastor! During the Children’s Message, Linda Lowry and Moderator Sarah Heend gave me gifts: a greeting card bearing the welcome news that a gift has been given to Habitat for Humanity in my honor; and a calming, salt block candle holder. After worship, I was surprised a second time as I discovered a marvelous, handmade “Thank You” banner bearing personal messages from our church kids hanging on the door of the pastor’s study. Very touching. With joy and gratitude, Pastor Dan

Jesus frequently is described with superlatives (the Name above all names, the King of kings, the Lord of lords, etc.). Similarly, many of Jesus’ teachings and actions are distinguished through the use of the adjective “great” (a great light; one pearl of great value; a great storm at sea; a great millstone; a great herd of swine; a great banquet; the Great Commandment; great awe; great faith; great mercy; great suffering; a great stone sealing Christ’s tomb; a great earthquake; great joy; the Great Commission).

Giving is a core characteristic of Christian life. We are taught to live as givers by our Savior Jesus.

There are many gifts we can offer to God. None is more precious than an expression of our gratitude, our thanks. The New Testament distinguishes between general “giving” (DIDOMI) and “giving thanks” (EUXARISTEO). The Greek verb for “giving thanks” is used very selectively, and this one occurs far fewer times than the more general verb.

The Sacrament of Holy Communion sometimes is called “The Great Thanksgiving” or “The Eucharist.” (This derives, in part, from a portion of the First Letter of Timothy. “For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, provided it is received with giving thanks (EUXARISTIAS); for it is sanctified through God’s Word and through prayer.” (1 Timothy 4:4-5) This Scripture is sometimes considered the basis for the Eucharistic Prayer (that is, the Prayer of Thanksgiving in a communion liturgy). In my experience, most Protestants are unaccustomed to the term “Eucharist.” We may not be familiar with this word. However, “Eucharist” (from EUXARISTEO) is such a fitting name for communion. The sacrament is an act of giving thanks.

Multiple incidents in Jesus’ ministry involve giving thanks. Consider Jesus’ border encounter with ten lepers (Luke 17); Jesus feeding a great multitude (John 6); Jesus at Lazarus’ tomb (John 11); Jesus in the Upper Room with the Twelve (Matthew 26); and more!

Giving is foundational to discipleship. Every follower of Christ is a giver. One cannot be a disciple without giving. “Therefore, be imitators of God, as beloved children; and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God… Entirely out of place is obscene, silly, and vulgar talk; but instead, let there be giving thanks (EUXARISTIA)… be filled with the Spirit; speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs; singing and making music with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks (EUXARISTOUNTES) to God for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Ephesians 5:1, 4, 18-20).

(Giving thanks continued on page 6)

As everyone knows, it's my favorite season! And, what a fall it has been. I don't know if I've ever seen such a beautiful fall, but now we're settling into sweater and hot cocoa season (fine by me). Fall also brings another important date, Miller's birthday. He will be four this year. Isn't that crazy?? You all have watched him grow into his preschooler self. Although he is crazy (and I spend most of the time apologizing to everyone at coffee hour), I wouldn't change him

at all. I appreciate that most of you just look at me sympathetically and let him be who he is. Once he calms down, he is so funny and bright. It's such an odd feeling, wishing for the boys to grow up, yet wanting them to stay little forever. I know I'm frazzled now, but I know one day, I will yearn for them to be my babies again. Miller insists that he is NOT a baby,

and I always tell him he will always be my baby. Mommies will always hug and kiss their babies. More experienced moms, please tell me this is the case. Otherwise, I do not think I can handle them growing up. Seeing that it is November, we have a couple important

musical things coming up. Thanksgiving service will be at St. Thomas this year. Their music director, June Jones, has invited us to join them in singing a combined choir anthem. Usually, we have a few singers join us. Please consider doing so again this year. I can pick up copies of the music if you would like. FURTHERMORE, it is almost cantata time. The Chancel Choir is busy preparing a wonderful program, and it is going to be great!! BUT, we still have opportunities if you are interested in narrating, singing or playing an instrument!! Now is not the time to be shy! Please see me today!

Until next time, Smiles, Anna-

JNM ADOPT-A- FAMILY

Although it seems too early to be thinking about Christmas, the Christian Action Board is hard at work gathering information on the families from Joint Neighborhood Ministries we will be adopting this year. Stay tuned to Keeping You Posted in November for the "arrival date" of our families.

KEEP GOD'S CHILDREN WARM

The Mitten Tree will be appearing in the Narthex near the end of November. Please bring in hats, gloves, mittens, etc. and place them on the tree. These items will be delivered to Joint Neighborhood Ministries later in December. Help keep those fingers and heads toasty warm this winter.

Opportunities To Volunteer

Throughout the year, hundreds of experienced CIRCLE OF CONCERN volunteers work closely with clients in the service programs. As the year draws to a close, CC offers special opportunities for friends in the community to help with the holiday programs.

Thanksgiving Baskets: Volunteers needed to pick up food from food drives, sort and box Thanksgiving ingredients and distribute Baskets to clients.*

Holiday Family Adoption: Sponsors are needed—families, organizations, businesses—to adopt Circle clients and make their holiday wishes come true.*

Toy Day: We need toy donations (infant to teens), set-up help and event help as parents "shop" for their children.*

If you want to share your time with our clients this season, contact Tom at [email protected] or 636-861-2623 x113, or visit circleofconcern.org and click on Holiday Programs. *Please contact Tom about days to volunteer (none given on web site).

The Mary and Martha Women's Group met on Tuesday October 21st with our very own Art Teacher, Jan Wirtz, who presented pictures and information on the Art and Life of Georgia O'Keefe. Georgia OKeefe was a famous American woman artist who spanned most of the 20th Century. Thank you, Jan.

Lee Headrick led us in a devotion. She placed a gift box on the table and explained that the Grace of God is a gift for all us and is to be shared with others. Then she said the gift box was for any one of us. Jan Wirtz took the gift, opened it and found mini chocolate bars which she shared with all of us. Great way to make the point.

We plan to participate in the Vendor Fair on November 21st by sponsoring a Bake Sale and providing drinks. More details later.

The Trustees have been busy lately! Here is a partial list of things we have been busy with: refinishing the parking lot (including much physical labor on our part with cars, striping, and otherwise assisting), installing shelves, lights, and doorbells, fixing a leaking roof, mowing and trimming, purchasing a new scanner and a new mower, and, of course, Work Day.

Additionally, several people have asked for the words to "Amazing Trustees" (sung on Share the Shine Sunday to the tune of "Amazing Grace"). Here they are:

We mulch and mow and drill and hoe. The tools are always handy. We fix doorbells, machines, signs and lights and our decorations are dandy.

AA, Rally Day, VBS and Jazzercise, and Ivy Chapel dinners and wine. When the fax is on the blink, we fix that and then the sink, and we pay the bills on time.

They depend on us. We do it all without a fuss. It's done for church family and community. For the children of God, and the mission of God, we serve to our ability.

The season is changing, The asphalt needed paving. It's time to winterize. The furnace will work. It runs smooth, without a jerk. It will be warm for you guys.

More trustee activity to come.

“Above all, clothe yourselves in love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts to which indeed you were called in the one body. And you yourselves be ones giving thanks (EUXARISTOI). Let the word of Christ live in you richly; teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom; with grace in your hearts, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or in work, do all things in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks (EUXARISTOUNTES) to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:15-17).

Have you examined (or better yet, prayed for God to reveal) your giving potential?

What gifts is God providing for you to give?

In what ways would God like to see you grow? Display great faith? Great grace? Great joy? Great compassion?

I encourage you to call on God for help. Ask, and God will reveal to you faithful ways that you may give thanks.

Live joyously, giving thanks to God! Pastor Dan

ALL YOUTH-FAMILY TO THE ZOO RECAP

Over twenty Ivy Chapel folks met at the Primate House at the St. Louis Zoo on the last Sunday of September. We had a wonderful day-beautiful weather, families and friends, and fun activities. Shannon Farrell shared lots of information about the lemurs and monkeys in her care and answered many of our questions about the animals and their behavior. First we fed the lemurs in the back yard area of the primate house some apples and grapes and then headed inside to watch some “enrichment” activities with the animals. If you donated shoe boxes or toilet paper rolls to Vacation Bible School you can be sure the leftover ones did not go to waste! The monkeys enjoyed finding their food and treats that were hidden in the boxes. I’m glad so many Ivy Chapel people were able to go. Thanks to Shannon for giving us such a fun and educational tour.

Ivy Chapel's Craft & Vendor Fair

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR FAIR AND OUR VENDORS

Find the full page flyer in this newsletter for our third annual Vendor Fair. Coming up soon - Friday, November 21 from 5:30pm to 9pm.

This is a great fundraiser for Ivy Chapel UCC. It's a great way to shop for gifts, crafts, and unique creations, as well as desserts and baked goods. There's a raffle, too, where you can win products donated by our vendors. And it's fun!

One of the first questions the vendors ask is "Do you get a good crowd?"

Let's all get out and support our vendors and Ivy Chapel. The vendors need a good turnout to feel like our craft fair is worth taking part in. We ask them to advertise and hand out flyers to help promote our fair.

Will you do the same? Take a few flyers to put up at places you frequent. Spread the word to your friends. And COME TO THE CRAFT & VENDOR FAIR! You'll be helping everyone out and you'll be glad you came!

If you'd like some flyers—find one in this newsletter—to hand out see Erin Winship or contact the church office.

PREPARE THE WAY…

Sunday, November 30 is the first Sunday of Advent. Which means that Christmas is just around the corner. Let's start the holiday season

celebrating with Ivy Chapel’s annual Hanging of the Greens!
