What Is “Plaid Friday”?

Trumpeting the many benefits of shopping local,“Plaid Friday” is back for its 8th year. The first“Plaid Friday” was held in 2010 in Oakland, CA.

The goal was to offer a fun substitute to shopping atthe big box warehouse stores on “Black Friday” – theday after Thanksgiving – and to encourage shopping atlocal independent stores for the entire holiday season.The Plaid movement caught on and is now

established nationwide. Locally, the Twin Cities MetroIBA (Independent Business Alliance) champions themovement. This is an organization dedicated to

creating a better environment for locally-owned independent businesses, which, in turn, will help build vibrant and diverse communities.Shoppers are encouraged to wear plaid on “Plaid

Friday,” showing their support of local independentstores. (In fact, some stores offer special discounts toplaid-wearing customers!)Not only do the local stores benefit when people

shop at their nearby independent retailer, but the customers also benefit. The shopping experience ismore pleasant when you aren’t overwhelmed in amega store. The service tends to be more friendly andknowledgeable. The product line is often more unique.Once people rediscover the joys of shopping local,

they make it a regular routine.“Plaid Friday” is held on Nov. 24, the day after
