Congregation Temple Israel is a caring, inclusive community committed to living Reform Judaism and participating in the sacred destiny of the Jewish people and Israel through education, worship, and repair of the world.
Todah Rabah, thank you, Sarah and Ron Falkoff, co-chairs, and to our more than 120 wonderful

the night of the dinner and everything in between, you did so much to make this day so special for so
many people. (see page 15 for more photos.)

IF NOT NOW, WHEN? Rabbi Amy Feder
The end of 2012 has been a changeable and challenging
time for our friends and neighbors in Israel. In the
past few weeks alone, from the escalating conflicts in
Gaza to the United Nations’ decision to grant Palestine
recognition as a non-member observer state, the
situation has been changing so quickly that it’s hard to
even know where to begin when discussing the state of
the State of Israel. I hesitate to even write something
about the topic in this publication, knowing that even the
short lag time between when I finish this article and you
read it may turn out to be a period of great change and
turmoil that couldn’t have been predicted.
What I can share with you, however, is how our
congregation has been reacting to the news of Israel.
Over the holidays, I received many messages from
congregants anticipating tense conversations about
Israel over their Thanksgiving and Chanukah tables and
wondering how to respond. Some wanted to know how
to answer their relatives who questioned their loyalty
to Israel when they said they were praying for peace.
Others wanted to know if it was possible to separate the
Israel of Judaism from the Israel of the headlines. Every
person that spoke to me about Israel felt somehow
torn, wanting to support Israel, but not knowing how to
answer the inevitable questions about how to bring a
peaceful end to this seemingly endless conflict.
With the help of our Israel Engagement Committee, I’m
proud to say that our congregation is working hard to
provide as many diverse and informed answers to these
questions as possible. This past month, we had two
speakers give their perspectives on Israel. The first was
Rabbi Nir Barkin of Congregation YOZMA in Modi’in, who
came to speak about the state of the Reform movement
in Israel. The second was one of our young congregants,
who has been living in Israel the past two years and is in
the final steps of making aliyah and becoming an Israeli
citizen. In January, in conjunction with Tu B’Shevat, we
will be having our Israel Shabbat celebration and literally
giving everyone a taste of the Israel experience.
The truth is, as I told those congregants who came to me
with questions, there are no easy answers about Israel.
Regardless of our individual viewpoints, it is up to us as
Jews to be as knowledgeable and engaged as possible.
By virtue of being Jewish, people will often expect that
we have opinions and perspectives on the Jewish State.
To be uninformed simply isn’t acceptable. If you’re
looking for additional resources and information, please
contact the rabbis or our Israel Engagement Committee,
chaired by Rob Litz.
May this be the year when Israel finds peace!

CHUTZPAH Rabbi Michael Alper
One of the best parts of my rabbinate here at Temple
Israel is being able to work closely with our teens,
both while they’re living in St. Louis and once they’re
off at college. This year, I’ve received a number of
questions from college students and their parents
about the organization Chabad. While many larger
college campuses have Hillel Houses, which cater to
a broad spectrum of the Jewish population, there
are Chabad Houses nearly everywhere, in more than
1,000 cities worldwide. Chabad also reaches out to a
broad spectrum of Jews. However unlike Hillel, which
is dedicated to “creating a pluralistic, welcoming and
inclusive environment for Jewish college students,”
Chabad-Lubavitch is a Chasidic movement in Orthodox
Judaism which has a goal of attracting non-observant or
less observant Jews to become more observant.
So when parents and students question me about the
merits of getting involved with Chabad on Campus, my
response is always, “It depends!” Many young people
begin to drift away from Judaism when they leave the
comforts of their homes and congregations for college.
I must admit that Chabad, in particular, does a stellar
job of reaching out to those students and pulling them
back to Judaism, inviting them to experience Judaism
in perhaps a different and more involved way than they
had before. So if the option is choosing between no
Judaism in a person’s life or a different kind of Judaism,
I would be inclined to prefer the latter, but not without
serious concerns. My issue is that Chabad’s goal is
not just to help people stay Jewish, but to make them
“more” Jewish. Inherent in this thinking is a very real
implication that the Reform Jewish lifestyle is not
Jewish enough.
I remember working in Long Island during my tenure
at rabbinical school. Each year, there was a public
Chanukah menorah lighting sponsored by Chabad,
directly next to the public Christmas display. The year
I was in attendance, there was an excited buzz in the
community because Chabad had invited the Reform
rabbis in the area to join them in lighting the menorah.
For days there was a wonderful feeling of community
building among the various Jewish sects. Until, of
course, the Reform rabbis who wanted to participate
started to RSVP and discovered that Chabad had added
an important caveat to their invitation. Male Reform
rabbis were welcome, but the female ones were not. In
their eyes, not only was the idea of female rabbis not
Jewish enough, it was just plain not Jewish. As you
might imagine, that sense of excitement and community
strength quickly dissipated.
In St. Louis, we are constantly working to build a sense
of community with each branch of Judaism. I am happy
to have the opportunity to work alongside colleagues
and congregants from a broad spectrum of Jewish life.
My hope is that each of us will feel free to live our own
Jewish lives in the way that is most meaningful to us,
and will allow others to do the same.

Happy New Year to everyone! I hope that 2013 will be
an outstanding year for you and those you love. We are
starting out the year with a brand new Tadpole Room
(our youngest students). We already have quite a few
students enrolled in this class, and our new teachers
are amazing! It is remarkable what can happen when
you give parents a quality, loving environment and
outstanding dedicated teachers!
Our 2013 DECC enrollment materials will be out shortly,
as will information about our Rabbi Mark and Carol
Shook Preschool Summer Camp. It is not too early to
start thinking about summer and enrolling your children
in Camp Shook, the best camp around!
DECC is starting out 2013 with a Tot Shabbat on Friday,
January 4. Our Tot Shabbat program has become quite
the Friday night event. We begin in the Gall Family
Sanctuary with a very kid-friendly Shabbat service led by
our rabbis. Then we move into the Isserman Auditorium
for light appetizers and wine for the adults and “oodles
of noodles” for the kids. It is a very fun way to spend
the first Friday of every month, plus it truly creates a
vibrant DECC community.
Last month was our Parent/Teacher conferences.
They went very smoothly and the parents are quite
happy with DECC. Our teachers work very hard to
give the parents an accurate portrayal of their child’s
progress. Our amazing Parent Committee put together
an incredible luncheon for the teachers. Our teachers
are so appreciative that the parents go out of their way
to do this for them during conferences! They also bring
in breakfast for the teachers during our morning staff
meetings.
It is these kinds of activities that set DECC apart from
other preschools. Our students get the very best
preschool education from the most loving and giving
staff. Isn’t that what it is all about? Be on the lookout
for Camp Shook enrollment materials coming out soon.
Then not long after that, DECC enrollment for 2013-2014.

Last month’s school-wide Chanukah celebration was a big hit with students and parents alike. Our celebration included
an all-school assembly, followed by visits to various activity stations where students created dreidels and menorahs,
learned about and sampled Chanukah foods, wrapped donated toys and games to be distributed to children in need by
the Jewish Family and Children’s Service, sang Chanukah songs, and played Chanukah Trivia.
I’ll let the pictures tell the story.

ENGAGING OUR YOUTH
Stephanie Rhea, Youth Groups Advisor
Happy New Year!
As we enter 2013, I offer a few
reflections. Our youth at Temple
Israel are our future congregants and
leaders. These young people who
engage in our senior high youth group,
TIFTY, are incredible! They truly capture the spirit of
what we, as Reform Jews, want to instill in our children.
In 2012, the youth group led creative and educational
Shabbat services, assisted with children’s services
during the High Holidays, planned and ran the Purim
Carnival, created social movie nights for young families,
ran a blood drive, sold bagel breakfasts every Sunday at
religious school, and volunteered more than 100 hours
helping the Temple Israel community.
Outside the Temple, TIFTY has raised money for Camp
Rainbow; donated toys to children in need; helped
support a local battered women’s shelter; collected
winter coats and canned food; educated others about
topics such as mental health issues, drug and alcohol
abuse, and equal rights; visited the elderly and the sick;
and baked cookies for hospitalized veterans.
Best of all – they accomplished all this while having tons
of fun! The TIFTY Board organized group trips to ice
skating rinks, Ted Drewes, restaurants all over
St. Louis, haunted houses and more. They have met up
with Reform teens in Kansas City, Peoria, Omaha, and
Denver.
Our youth group program has accomplished a great deal,
but there is more work to do. Fewer than 35 percent of
our Temple Israel youth in grades 8-12 participated in
a TIFTY event in 2012. Please encourage your teens to
join us at some of our upcoming events. Please contact
me at 314-432-8050 or [email protected] if you have any
questions or need additional information.

WHAT’S NEW AT NEW MT. SINAI?
This is the time of year when most of us make
resolutions to take action in our life. If you have not
already purchased property at New Mt. Sinai Cemetery,
now would be a great time to do so. There are so many
reasons:
• It’s Temple Israel’s cemetery, which means that
you are a member of the New Mt. Sinai Cemetery
Association.
• Temple Israel members receive 10 percent discounts
on pre-need purchases.
• A portion of your purchase is donated back to
Temple Israel.
• New Mt. Sinai permits burial of non-Jewish family
members.
• We accept cremations.
• New Mt. Sinai has the only Mausoleum in the St.
Louis Jewish community.
• The cemetery is listed on the National Register of
Historic Places.
• New Mt. Sinai is recognized as one of the most
beautiful cemeteries in the region.
And most important: The Cemetery Association needs
sales of property to remain financially sound.
Call our office, visit us online, or come by in person and
see why so many of your friends and family have chosen
New Mt. Sinai for more than 60 years.
