ADVANTAGE TUESDAY, MAY 24, 2016 | A5 00 1 As Memorial Day rolls around this May 30, more than a few of us are busy, thinking about picnics and opening the cottage and inding the best deals at the mall. But many American families are going to be remembering their loss — the absence of a dear one who gave his or her life in service to the armed forces. Especially painful are the memories of loved ones who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after returning home and who took their own lives. A 2012 report from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs suggests that as many as 22 veterans take their own lives every day, many of them while suffering from PTSD; many more make an attempt but survive. It’s a heavy toll, on top of wartime losses. These men and women may have been burdened with guilt for acts committed during war; they might have been unable to forget terrible violence committed against themselves or comrades-at-arms, or even against innocents caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. They may be veterans of the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom or Enduring Freedom.
