The 17th Japan Flute Convention Competition, 2015

We will provide four competitions: Solo Performance, Piccolo Performance, Ensemble Award Performance, and Ensemble Performance. If you wish to enter more than one competition, you will be able to take Ensemble Performance and Ensemble Award Performance. You cannot enter any other combination of competitions.

Notes regarding all competitions Application You must pay for the “Whole term”.

(Participants of the Ensemble Performance can enter with a one day ticket.) If you wish to enter more than one competition, you have to send an application form for each

competition. Please note that if your application forms are not filled out completely, we might not accept them. If you decide not to perform after you applied, please let us know as soon as possible (Fax:

03-3442-7420). However, we will not refund your application fee. You must play the pieces that you wrote on your application form. You cannot change them. Requirements for contestants: Please refer to the competition performance details. During the Competition When you come to the preliminary contest, you must have a ticket for the “Whole term”. Show this

Solo Performance Details

Date: The First Preliminary Contest Wednesday 19th August 2015 at 10:00 The Second Preliminary Contest Thursday 20th August 2015 at 10:00 The Semi-final Contest Friday 21st August 2015 at 10:00 The Final Contest Saturday 25th August 2015 at 10:00 Organizer: Japan Flutists Association Head of the organizers: Mamoru Sugiyama Jury: Kyohei Yamamoto (chief), JFA directors, and others. Prizes: The top three contestants will be given a certificate with 800,000 Japanese Yen, 400,000 Yen, and

200,000 Yen in the order of finishing. Contestants placed 4th to 6th will be given a certificate. The winner of the Masao Yoshida Prize will be given a certificate with 100,000 Yen. The top three will be given a chance to play in a concert at the next JFA convention.

Requirements for contestants: No restrictions on nationality or age.

Each contestant must be or become a member of the JFA, and must pay for the whole term of the convention. (Those who have not applied for the “Whole term” will not be accepted.) Former 1st prize winners cannot enter.

Maximum number: 150 people. After reaching this number, we will not take any more applicants. When we reach this number, if we receive more applications on the same day, lots will be drawn to decide who will take part from among the applications that we received on that day.

Term for receiving application forms: From May 8th (Friday) to June 8th (Monday), 2015. (We will accept applications postmarked June 8th.) If we reach the maximum number of applicants, we will announce it on our website: http://japan-flutists.org/

Application Fee: 15,000 Yen (We will not refund any application fee, except for applications received after we have reached the maximum number.)

How to apply: Send both the 17th Japan Flute Convention and the Solo Performance Competition application forms by mail to the address given below, and transfer your fees to the bank account given below. The fees must be transferred in Japanese Yen, and also add 5,000 Japanese Yen for bank charges. However, the extra 5,000 Yen is only necessary for each transfer, so if you apply for the convention (Whole term 13,000 Yen), and pay the entrance fee for the Japan Flutists Association (1,000 Yen), Member’s  fee (6,000 Yen), and apply for the Competition for Solo Performance (15,000 Yen), you must transfer 35,000 Yen plus 5,000 Yen, so the total cost will be 40,000 Yen.

own accompanists, but in this case you must  bear  the  accompanist’s  expenses.   If you wish to play with an official accompanist, you will have to comply with the rehearsal schedule that we decide for that accompanist, and you cannot choose which pianist will accompany you. If you bring your own accompanist, you will be given a rehearsal place for the same length of time as if you use an official accompanist.

Prizes: The top three contestants will be given a certificate with 200,000 Japanese Yen, 100,000 Yen, and

50,000 Yen in the order of finishing. Contestants placed 4th to 6th will be given a certificate. The top three will be given a chance to play in a concert at the next JFA convention.

Requirements for contestants: No restrictions on nationality or age. Contestants must be or become members of the JFA, and must pay for the whole term of the convention. (Those who have not applied for the “Whole term” will not be accepted.) Former 1st prize winning groups cannot enter.

Type of Group: Duo, trio and quartet only. No other types of group are allowed. A group should play with the same number of players and with the same members in both the preliminary and the final contests. But the exchange of parts is acceptable.

So if you apply for the convention with 2 other members, which means a group with 3 members (Whole term 13,000 Yen x 3), and apply for the entrance fee for the Japan Flutists Association (1,000 Yen x 3), Member’s   fee (6,000 Yen x 3), and apply for the Competition for Ensemble Award Performance (6,000 Yen x 3), you must transfer 78,000 Yen plus 5,000 Yen, so the total cost will be 83,000 Yen.

Ensemble Award Performance Repertoire The Preliminary Contest

You must play in the following order: (1) (2)

(1) [Duo] F. Kuhlau / Grand Duet Op. 39 No. 3, 2nd movement, Adagio con anima [Trio] F. Kuhlau / Grand Trio Op. 90, 3rd movement, Adagio [Quartet] Fr. Kuhlau / Grand Quartet Op. 103, 3rd movement, Adagio molto con espressione

(2) One piece which you choose, which must be less than 6 minutes. Arranged pieces are acceptable.

The Final Contest You must play 2 pieces which you choose, and the total time must be less than 20 minutes including the time between pieces. One arranged piece is acceptable, but you must play one original piece at least. Regarding the piece of your choice, omitting some bars to meet the time limits is acceptable. For the piece of your choice for the Preliminary Contest, you can play an extract from the piece

which you will play for the final contest. Instruments must be flute only for the Preliminary Contest (1). Instruments can be flute, piccolo,

soprano flute, flute d’amour, alto flute, bass flute, F-bass and contrabass flute for the Preliminary Contest and the Final Contest.

No change of pieces or the size of the group is permitted after application. Players should not to belong to more than one group.

Ensemble Performance Details

Date: The Contest Friday 21st August 2015 at 10:00 Organizer: Japan Flutists Association Head of the organizers: Mamoru Sugiyama Jury:Mieko Yoshioka (chief), JFA directors, and others. Requirements for contestants: No restrictions on nationality or age.

Contestants must be or become members of JFA, and must apply for the convention. (Contestants can enter with a one day ticket on Friday 23rd August.)

Classification: The contestants will be classified as follows. 1. Primary-school pupils 2. Middle-school pupils 3. High-school pupils 4. Students (other than music students) and adult members of society 5. Music college students and graduates

The classification of a group depends on the oldest player. If the group contains music college students and graduates, it will belong to classification 5.

Prizes: A gold prize, a silver prize, and a bronze prize will be given to the best groups of each classification.

All the contestants will be given souvenirs. The groups which perform outstandingly will be given a chance to play in a concert at the next

JFA convention.

Term for receiving application forms: From May 8th (Friday) to June 15th (Monday), 2015. (We will accept applications postmarked June 15th.)

Application fee: 3,000 Yen per player. (We will not refund any application fees.) How to apply: Send both the 17th Japan Flute Convention and the Ensemble Performance Competition

application forms by mail to the address given below, and transfer your fees to the bank account given below. An application form for the 17th Japan Flute Convention must be sent for each player. But only one application form for the Ensemble Performance Competition must be sent for each group. The fees must be transferred in Japanese Yen, and also add 5,000 Japanese Yen for bank charges. However, the extra 5,000 Yen is only necessary for each transfer. So if you apply for the convention with 2 other members, which means a group with 3 members (Whole term 13,000 Yen x 3), and apply for the entrance fee for the Japan Flutists Association (1,000 Yen x 3), Member’s  fee (6,000 Yen x 3), and apply for the Competition for Ensemble Performance (3,000 Yen x 3), you must transfer 69,000 Yen plus 5,000 Yen, so the total cost will be 74,000 Yen.

A group should contain two or more players but not more than 10 players; instruments can be flute, piccolo, soprano flute, flute d’amour, alto flute, bass flute, F-bass and contrabass flute, and without a conductor (it is not permitted to use any other instrument).

No change of pieces is permitted after application. Players should not to belong to more than one group.
