EX-OFFICIO:BOARD OF DIRECTORS:

Thank you to each company who was a vendor at the Home & Garden Show in February. It was an excellent event with great attendance and it could not have been possible without the support of the vendors.

We will be hosting Warrior Week in conjunction with Rivers & Spires to thank our military neighbors. The events are April 19-22 and are all free to our Soldiers and their Families. Please consider sponsoring an event or volunteering during this weekend – it is a small gesture compared to the sacrifices the Soldiers and Families make.

Our Chamber continues to be strong and vibrant because of active membership and strong business leaders like each of you. The Great American Clean Up Day is a good way to support your community. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN, SIDNEY JOHNSON

• MEMBERSHIP SERVICES: Focuses on developing and enhancing Chamber programs that both support existing members and encourage recruitment of new members.

• PUBLIC/COMMUNITY AFFAIRS: The broad reaching and diverse goals of this committee include educa-tion initiatives such as Partners In Education (PIE), the Imagination Library Program Partnership, and the Great American Clean Up (community wide clean up day).

WHERE DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL AND WHAT DID YOU STUDY? I graduated from high school at Clarksville High School and afterwards graduated from APSU with a B.S. in business education.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR CURRENT PROFESSION? Actually, it chose me. When Lead-ership Clarksville was born, the originators began searching for a director, my name surfaced and the rest is history.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM ORIGINALLY? I was born in Christian County, Kentucky. I have lived in Clarksville most of my adult life.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT CLARKSVILLE? The fact that it is surrounded by the river, close to Barkley and Kentucky Lakes, and, of course, its people.

IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY OTHER PROFESSION WHAT WOULD IT BE? I would love to be an international tour guide so that I could travel the world.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEAL? Since I am a coun-try girl, I love fresh vegetables out of the garden in the summer.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OR TV SHOW? My favorite TV show is “The Big Bang Theory”. Having a favorite movie is difficult, as I have so many, but maybe if I have to choose it would be “The Piano”.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE TOUGHEST CHALLENGE YOU’VE HAD TO OVERCOME IN YOUR LIFE? Just recently, the death of my son and husband within a seven-month period has been devastating.

WHERE WAS YOUR LAST VACATION? Kingsland, Georgia and Florida

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME OR HOBBY? Playing duplicate bridge

WHAT IS SOMETHING MOST CLARKSVILLIANS WOULDN’T KNOW ABOUT YOU? When I was much younger, I rode quarter horses and rounded up cattle on our family farm.

IF YOU HAD ONE MESSAGE TO OUR COMMUNITY WHAT WOULD IT BE? Please support our local non-profit agencies, volunteer, and help the less fortunate.

MARCHRead More! National Read Across America Day is March 2. Take time at home to read aloud with your children, and have them take turns reading to you. Encourage older children to read on their own. Any-thing that interests them counts, from comic books to the classics.

• Report cards are scheduled to go home on March 13, 2017. You’ll want to get help for any problem areas before your child falls too far behind. Ask your child’s teacher how grades are determined and for suggestions on how your child can improve. Remember, celebrating a job well done with a high-five, or a pat on the back goes a long way.

• Schools are closed for Spring Break, March 27-31. Visiting mu-seums, zoos, theaters, historical sites, aquariums, or other educa-tional places will help increase your child’s exposure to new sub-jects and may spark new interests.

APRIL• Progress reports are sched-uled to go home on April 3, 2017. Please do not delay in asking for help if you’re concerned about your child’s grades. For free aca-demic support at home, try www.khanacademy.org.

GOOD NEWS

THDA, CITY OF CLARKSVILLE ANNOUNCE $15,000 INCENTIVE TO HOMEBUYERS IN TARGETED NEIGHBORHOODS

The Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA) is offering $15,000 in down payment assistance to homebuyers who purchase a home in target-ed neighborhoods that were hard hit by the downturn and have been slower to recover in Clarksville and across the state.

THDA Executive Director Ralph Perry announced the new program on February 8, 2017 at a joint press conference with City of Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan and Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett. By attracting homebuyers and stimulating home sales, the program is designed to protect the families already living in these targeted areas from blight, falling property values, and risk of foreclosure.

Eligible borrowers who purchase homes in targeted zip codes using THDA’s Great Choice Home Loan program can apply for $15,000 in HHF-DPA assistance toward their down payment and closing costs in the form of a forgivable second mortgage loan. Targeted zip codes in Clarksville-Montgomery County are 37040 and 37042. Homebuyers will make no monthly payments on the second mortgage loan during a 10-year term and it does not accrue any interest. The first time homebuyer requirement is waived for military personnel who are active duty, retired or reserve.

“Whatever our on going interest rate is, we knock it down by half a percent. It is something our board does for men and wom-en who sign up to serve this country,” Perrey said. The funds for the down payment assistance program will be available beginning March 1. THDA received approval from the U.S. Department of Treasury to commit $60 million in federal funding to its new HHF Down Payment Assistance Program.

FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, VISIT THDA.ORG.

WELCOME GENERAL POPPAS On February 2, over 100 guests from the Clarksville-Montgomery County and Fort Campbell communities, attended a reception at the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce, to welcome Major General Andrew Poppas and his wife Beth back to Fort Campbell. Major General Poppas took command of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) on January 19, 2017.
